Gotta Have It! Statue Edition: Fables Statue: Bigby and Snow White

Fables is a comic book series created by writer Bill Willingham, published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint beginning in 2002. The series deals with various characters from fairy tales and folklore – referring to themselves as “Fables” – who have been forced out of their Homelands by “The Adversary,” who has conquered the realm. The Fables have traveled to our world and formed a clandestine community in New York City known as Fabletown. Fables who are unable to blend in with human society (such as monsters and anthropomorphic animals) live at “the Farm” in upstate New York.

This beautifully sculpted statue of Bigby Wolf and Snow White from Vertigo’s acclaimed FABLES series stands approximately 10.5″ high x 8″ wide x 9″ deep (including base), includes a four-color Certificate of Authenticity and is packaged in a four-color box.

Sometimes statues come along that require extensive searching and super sleuth methods to obtain. These could be in limited quantity, ridiculously expensive, or even be overseas. Regardless of the particular reason, you know you have to own this statue. By any means. No other statue will replace your intense longing for just this one piece, your holy grail of statues. For me, it was Mark Buckingham and Jim Maddox’s sculpt of Bigby and Snow White.

Maddox’s statue stands an impressive 10.5″ high and weighs around eight pounds. Pretty big for a DC Direct statue. The statue features Bigby Wolf in his over-sized wolf form and Snow White standing over a pile of disassembled wooden soldiers.

The details in every inch of the statue are exquisite. Snow White’s clothes really exude the presence of fabric while the soldiers really look like they’re made out of wood. Maddox also put a great deal of effort in painstakingly rendering each hair on Bigby’s body, and the result is simply fantastic. The only weak link in the entire sculpt exists on Snow White’s face. Though her expression is likened to her character, the overall sculpt looks a bit simple compared to the rest of the piece. Not necessarily a bad thing, and it almost complements Bigby’s details in a pleasing manner.

The entire piece is overwhelmingly powerful in design. Because of its large size and heavy weight, the statue is incredibly sturdy and solid. Unless you own a frisky cat the size of Shere Khan, this statue isn’t going anywhere.

The only complaint I have is that for the exorbitant price and limited quality, the paint job is a bit lacking. The colors could pop more and the palette could be expanded. However, Maddox’s sculpt is well done enough that the slight bleeding and soft colors don’t matter.

This statue is 305 in a run of 400. Because there is such a limited quantity and every store under-ordered, finding one of these will prove to be quite the challenge, not to mention a bit pricey.

Overall, I give this figure a 5/5. I’m biased, because I fell in love with the statue when I first laid eyes on it. It only became more desirable in my year-long quest to obtain it. The dimensions are great, the paint job is on-par, and the sculpt is superb. Capturing one of the finest moments in the series, this statue is essential to any die-hard Fables fan.

This statue is absolutely gorgeous. I am a huge fan of Fables, but am new to collecting statues (I thought about getting into it, and this one was one of the few that finally pushed me over the edge into wanting to start). However, I decided a bit too late.

Obviously it took you a year to find yours, but what do you recommend to someone else who is looking for a rare one that got away? Are there any secondary sale websites or specific methods that have worked well for you?

Aw man! I feel your pain.

The obvious answer is ebay, but other avenues you can pursue:

-Cons and conventions. A lot of times retailers will bring the stuff they can’t sell in store, and present it to a larger market audience by bringing it to a con. You just have to hunt.
-Ask your retailer if they can order it for you. Maybe it’s still available from Diamond.
-Find a Fables forum and post that you’re looking for it there. Other die-hards may have one to sell you, or can point you in the right direction in finding one.
-E-mail the studio that produces it and find out if they can help you.
-Google comic shops in your area and call them all to see if they have it. If not, hit up a comic book forum and ask the numbers to other peoples shops and call those.

Jim Maddox has been my “unofficial” adopted son for many years and I have numerous statues sculpted by him including Snow White & Bigby Wolf. Item is “as new” in box & never displayed. At 76 , medical bills are tough so I am taking offers on this and will provide inquirers a list of other Maddox statues I have for sale.
