Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 01/16/19

Adventure Time Marcy & Simon #1 (Boom!)
NickZ: Following the events of the series finale, Simon goes on an apology tour to make of for all the wrongs he did as Simon with the help from Marceline and her real life voice actor, Olivia Olson!!!

Amazing Spider-Man #13 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Jonah ended up being the real hero in all of this but I’m sure Kingpin won’t let him off so easy.
NickZ: Since Spider-Man revealed his true identity to him, J. Jonah Jameson has really made a huge turnaround as a character and it’s never been more noticeable as it is in this issue!

The Batman Who Laughs #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I guess. It really pains me to say I’m not feeling this book since the creative is one of my favs.
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’m honestly over the title character (I was never a fan to begin with, even in Metal), but this series so far is very gripping with an intriguing look at Bruce as he slowly loses his sanity. And, the cliffhanger reveal was very unexpected!
NickZ: I was absolutely floored by the way Snyder ended this issue by bringing it all back to the beginning of his own first foray into the Bat universe!

Black Panther #8 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: PUT THE KNIFE WHERE IT BELONGS!!! Man, Coates is delivering an epic story for all Black Panther fans!

Catwoman #7 (DC)
Infinite Speech: So the Penguin did all that to get Selina’s attention?
NickZ: As if Selina’s life wasn’t bad enough, she gets a visit for her least favorite rogue of Batman, the Penguin!

Deadly Class #36 (Image)
Martin: 3/5 stars. At this point, I’m really just sticking with this due to the lead-up to ‘Tec #1000. If not for that, I might be taking a break on this book. The art is good, but not enough to make up for a flat story with a huge body count.
NickZ: It’s a flash from the past as Marcus is visited by the ghosts of yesterday who help him figure out where he goes form here! Revisiting these characters on the same day they make their debut on the Deadly Class TV show is a genius move on Remender’s part.

Detective Comics #96 (DC)
NickZ: Bruce is losing people that were instrumental in him becoming Batman, Tomasi is literally unmaking Batman with every stroke of his keyboard!

Fantastic Four #6 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: So Galactus is back to eating planets?
NickZ: After all that character development Doom went trough under Bendis, It looks like Slott has sent him right back to his scheming ways.

Flash #62 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Barry you got played like it was your first day on the job. YOU SHOULD HAVE LISTENED TO IRIS!! (I don’t even like her!)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I really do like “positive Barry,” but I do NOT like “stupid Barry.” He’s a crime scene investigator & should have approached Psych with more caution. At the very least, he should’ve listened to Iris. Also tired of all the new Force users being bad guys.

Hawkman #8 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. As a full storyline, having Hawkman trying to atone for his past of leading the Deathbringers isn’t all that interesting to me. But, as a single issue, Carter Hall talking to past-self Catar-Ol on a Krypton minutes away from exploding was very emotional.

Ironheart #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I’m blown away by how great this series is and only two issues in!

Isola #6 (Image)
Infinite Speech: This is one of the most beautifully drawn comics on the shelf and I’m glad it’s back!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Kerschl’s & Msassyk’s art is incredible and lends an otherworldly air to this fantasy series, lifting the score. As much as I love the story and the art, however, after such a long hiatus, I would have liked a little more plot development this issue.

Justice League Dark #7 (DC)
Infinite Speech: A bit of an anthology issue that plays on some great horror tropes.
Martin: 5/5 stars. This was my “comic of the week” last week. The writing and art combine to create a horribly creepy, unsettling, nightmarish set of stories with a very surprising and chilling reveal at the end. This is how horror is done right.

Middlewest #3 (Image)
NickZ: Middlewest has the feel of the Wizard of Oz in the modern day with the art and colors of Corona and Beaulieu to back it up! This more than makes up for Skottie Young’s less than stellar Deadpool book.

Red Hood: Outlaw #30 (DC)
NickZ: Of all the former Teen Titans that Jason could run into, this is the most unexpected and least likely to have anything in common with him.

Return of Wolverine #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: Is this book still happening?

Shadowman #11 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: So. Many. Double. Crosses!! It’ll be interesting to see how the Shadow Loa and Jack work together from now on.

Superb #16 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: If Jack said “I am team leader!” one more time I was going to scream. That kid needs to step aside and listen to Cosmosis.

Supergirl #26 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The prison break-out scene, especially with Kara’s confidence and determination to save the other prisoners, was great and shows why Kara inspires people. The addition of the Omega Men was unexpected, in a good way. Overall, a great story so far.

Superman #7 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. I’ve not liked any Jor-El storylines in the Rebirth era, & this is no different. Additionally, Lois’ characterization is completely off – forcing her way into going on the space field trip with Jon and homicidal Jor-El, but then leaving shortly thereafter?
NickZ: I hate that Bendis advanced Superboy’s age in this way. It’s bad enough kids today are in such a rush to grow up, he literally stole the innocence of the only real kid hero left in comics.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder In Hell #1 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Mateus Santolouco is back and even better than before if you can believe it!

Titans #33 (DC)
NickZ: Is it weird that it took Nightwing being taken from them for this team to really come into their own?

Uncanny X-Men #10 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: So he just pulled a Legion and wiped it all away? And the last mutant we get is the one I like the least! *face palm*
NickZ: As all the X-Men make their last stand against X-Man and his Horsemen of salvation, Jean makes one final play to save her son’s soul before it’s too late for everyone!

Venom #10 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: A round of applause for Cates, Stegman, Mayer, and Martin who deliver one of the best issues in this series and gives you an Eddie Brock worth reading about!
NickZ: Eddie has lost everything, now haunted by his family’s dark past he is hit with a literal death sentence. Cates and Stegman have turned Venom into a Greek Tragedy.

The Wicked + The Divine #41 (Image)
NickZ: In dramatic fashion, all the players have been brought back onto the playing field just as the end game is about to begin!

Wonder Woman #62 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Action-wise, there’s a good fight between Ares & Diana. Story-wise, there’s some great commentary on how bringing in “the big guns” to fight your battles is rarely successful. But, I’m glad the story is moving back to Diana’s search for her people.
