Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 01/23/19

Aliens: Resurrection #1 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: Zula Hendricks and Amanda Ripley are attempting to expose Weyland-Yutani’s xenomorph experiments. It may not go well but I’m here for this one till the end!

American Carnage #3 (Vertigo)
Infinite Speech:
Brian Hill is pulling no punches and hits you with combos of storytelling excellence while Leonardo Fernandez and Dean White finishes you off with some hard hitting visuals. Buy American Carnage.

Avengers #13 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This is a self contained story about he very first Iron Fist and now I want to know more about her!!

Batman #63 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Tom King is putting Batman through hell and I can’t wait to see what type of Batman we get when it’s all over.
Martin: 4/5 stars. The “Knightmares” storyline so far has been good, especially by matching the artist to each story. This issue is no different, with a fun exploration of the “could have been” of Bruce’s and Selina’s wedding and a great co-starring role by John Constantine.
NickZ: Exploring Batman’s psyche through a series of nightmares is a unique idea and I think it’s a bold move using several issues to do that but this has to be going somewhere, right?

The Beauty #26 (Image)
NickZ: How has this comic series not been picked up by some cable or streaming network and turned into a kick ass TV show by now is beyond my understanding! This book needs to be adapted! It’s that good!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #1 (Boom!)
NickZ: A very fun re-imagining of the classic series! I’m on board to see what Bellaire has up her sleeve for the iconic heroine!

Die!Die!Die! #7 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Just when I though this series couldn’t get any crazier Kirkman proves me wrong but it’s the art by Chris Burnham that has my jaw hitting the floor constantly!

Freedom Fighters #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. So far, the world-building in this series has been a little bit better than the character development, but it’s only been two issues so hopefully that will come later. What’s selling me so far is the premise combined with Eddy Barrows’ art.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Not sure why I didn’t read the first issue but I’m going to rectify that because this one here is just fantastic!
NickZ: With only two issues in, Taylor has already proven that he is good at writing Spidey, but his use of side characters like Boomerang and Human Torch are the true gems of this book.

Justice League #16 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
Something huge is happening in the DCU and you want to be right here when it happens.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Great end to the arc, with good explorations of J’onn & Kendra, & fun moments from Starman as well. The main thing that bothered me was I kept thinking the other GLs were fabrications by Shayera, but, nope; Kilowog was just being a jerk. ?
NickZ: “Escape from Hawkworld” was so damn great! Snyder & Tynion wrote one hell of a story and Cheung & Segovia’s artwork was gorgeous! This more than makes up for that weak ass Aquaman story.

Livewire #2 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech:
From storytelling to the artwork, THIS is the title you want to be reading! Vita Ayala is killing it and I want the next issue yesterday!

Naomi #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: It’s written like a mystery and Naomi’s story has me hooked already!
Martin: 4/5 stars. A great beginning to a fun, interesting, and different new character with the potential for a great supporting cast. Visuals (including pencils, inking, AND coloring) by Jamal Campbell look fantastic. Recommendled! My full review here!

Shazam #2 (DC)
Martin: .5/5 stars. Lots of fun things still happening, but given the way Johns set this up with all the foster kids, there is little time for characterization. Only Billy, Freddy, & Mary so far have any discernible personalities. The Dr. Sivana & Mr. Mind scenes were fun.

Shuri #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Okoye truly speaks what she thinks here! lol I’m still not too sold on the art but the narrative has me coming back for every issue.

Star Trek TNG Terra Incognita #6 (IDW)
NickZ: Another great TNG miniseries from Tipton and Tipton, I can’t wait to see what is going to follow because this story is obviously not over!

The Superior Spider-Man #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Otto finally gets in over his head against Terrax and I hope he’s humbled a bit after this. Spoiler: I know he won’t be.
NickZ: Whether you love him or hate him, you had to feel pretty bad for Otto after taking such a beating from Terrax!

Teen Titans #26 (DC)
NickZ: Damian needs a serious ass whoopin disrespecting Alfred like that! It was pretty funny seeing the Titan’s get their asses handed to them by “Batman”!

Uncanny X-Men Annual #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: THE G.O.A.T. IS BACK!!! My only issue was that they made him say that he was wrong when we all know Cyclops was right!
