Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 02/07/18

Adventure Time #73 (Boom!)
NickZ: The Candy Kingdom learns the hard way that you can have too much of a good thing.

Avengers #679 (Marvel)
NickZ: So not only is there an “old” Avenger we never knew about, but now it seems there is also a new Elder of the Universe that we never knew about either? Using the same plot device twice in one story is just lazy writing.
Infinite Speech: So far the story is barely keeping me but the art is some of the best so there’s that.

Batman #40 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Really gorgeous art, but the end to this “Superfriends” arc is unfortunately not up to the standards of the beginning. The Gentle Man set-up seemed a little too convenient, and never really mattered other than to show Bruce’s & Diana’s relationship.
NickZ: Okay, so everyone overreacted to the last issue and we all owe Tom King an apology. I love the dynamic between Bruce and Diana and the Kangaroo part just killed me!
Infinite Speech: Wonder Woman has a Kangaroo? Great Joelle Jones art and I need more of the Gentle Man’s story!

Batman White Knight #5 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Outstanding art again is the real star here, but there are also some great interactions with Batman & his “family,” & as much as I think Harley is over-used, in this issue I enjoyed her portrayal.
NickZ: Murphy and Hollingsworth are an amazing team as evident by this series. The fact that they referenced the episode of Batman the Animated Series where Batman buys Harley a dress was excellent.

Black Lightning #4 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I didn’t expect to enjoy this series as much as I am and keeping my fingers crossed that we can get Isabella and Henry on another one!

Black Panther: The Sound and the Fury #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This one is for those who are new to the Black Panther mythos and wasn’t for me.

Deathstroke #28 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Christopher Priest is giving the world the best Deathstroke we’ve seen in years!

Green Arrow #37 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. One of the “under the radar” Rebirth books, this creative team has killed it on this series, especially on this issue. A perfect example of comics creators using art & words to create a great story.

Green Lanterns #40 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. There is an attempt to recapture some of the great Jess/Simon interactions from Sam Humphries’ run, but it somehow doesn’t quite work. The humorous bits are distracting, which is a fine line because I like humor in my DC comics.

Half Past Danger II #5 (IDW)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Fun action adventure with good, action-oriented art. All that plus Nazis, ninjas, and a T-Rex wearing a machine-gun harness! It’s like every picture you drew as a kid all made into a comic.

Hawkeye #15 (Marvel)
NickZ: You can never get enough of Clint and Kate, they literally have the best mentor/mentee relationship in comics.

Iceman #10 (Marvel)
NickZ: Iceman going toe to toe with an Apocalypse powered Daken really shows how much he has grown with his abilities. I was a bit surprised at his cavalier attitude toward his boyfriend’s possible death.

Incognegro: A Graphic Mystery (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: This story is just as great as it was when it was originally released and looks even better in this new format!

Incognegro: Renaissance #1 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: It’s a slow burn and damn well worth it towards the end! Glad this is back and Johnson and Pleece haven’t lost a step!

Iron Fist #77 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Brisson has med this my favorite arc in the new series while Perkins’ art makes my eyes very happy! I actually want more Sabretooth and Iron Fist!!

Jem and the Holograms: Dimensions #3 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: This is just one fun anthology series fans should have in their read pile!

Justice League #38 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Flash pulls a “Princess Leia from TLJ” moment that should have fanboys with too much time on their hands really upset. But the issue ends, after a somewhat abrupt transition, with an unexpected scene that will have serious future repercussions.
NickZ: Flash was super annoying in this issue with all his whining and science talk and the whole reason Batman has to step down makes no sense.

Mech Cadet Yu #6 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: One of the best all-ages comics out there right now and it’s got giant robots!

Noble #9 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Noble is the superhero story that makes me feel that childlike excitement about going to the LCS and picking up a copy! It’s that damn good and Khary Randolph and Emilio Lopez deliver my favorite cover to date!

Paper Girls #20 (Image)
NickZ: When you think this series can get any better or more insane, Brain K. Vaughan proves you wrong! Also, the results of the reader survey were very interesting.

Rise of the Black Panther #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Evan Narcisse is elevating the Black Panther mythos to a new level and all fans should get in right now and enjoy what’s happening!

Snotgirl #9 (Image)
NickZ: I would have never expected a series about a beauty blogger to have kept me this interested and entertained for nearly 10 issues but when it’s the brainchild of Byran Lee O’Malley and the visuals of Leslie Hung, I shouldn’t be surprised.

Spider-Man #237 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Reading that Bendis dialogue for Aaron was just painful. Other than that it was pretty fun.

Spirits of Vengeance #5 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: They stuck the landing so I’m sticking with the series a bit longer!

Superman #40 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Mahnke’s art is great, especially depicting Jon as a true kid & not just a mini-adult, and also in how powerful & majestic Superman looks. The plot’s a little derivative of something that recently happened in Green Lanterns, but that’s a minor quibble.
NickZ: I was really disappointed in Superman for being so dismissive and disrespectful of the beliefs of another civilization.

Swamp Thing Winter Special #1 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Really gorgeous art for both stories, and an interesting choice to publish Len Wein’s last Swampy story without words (he hadn’t finished the actual dialogue/script, just the story). It showcases Jones’ art but also Wein’s storytelling.

Venom #151 (Marvel)
NickZ: You know Venom has really turned a corner when he is being the calm, rational one during an unprovoked fight with another superhero.

The Walking Dead #176 (Image)
NickZ: I have some major reservations about this new group of people but at least Michonne got a well deserved moment of happiness.

Transformers vs Visionaries #2 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: This is the Visionaries we deserved as kids but glad we get it in this great series!

X-Men Gold #21 (Marvel)
NickZ: I once again must raise my doubts in Kitty’s leadership of this team. They seem to lose pretty easily whenever she is in command.

X-Men Red #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: This was the return to form that we have all been waiting for with the X-Men! Jean is brilliantly using her powers and presence in an almost Superman-like way to bring about major, real, positive changes in the world. I am 100% on board!
Infinite Speech: Nick told me I’d like this one despite my dislike for Jean Grey. He was right and I’ll be picking up the next issue.
