I’m not going to lie folks, I think Andi Ewington’s OGN (Original Graphic Novel) Forty-Five45 is one of the best books to come out this year! If you have not read it, do yourself a favor and pick it up ASAP, then sit down and prepare to be entertained. While reading the various interviews in the book, you get the feeling that there is much more going on and an underlying threat to some of the characters involved. Not an easy feat to pull off when you consider that each of the 45 characters gets one page of art that goes along with the one page interview. A little hint to anyone who has read Forty-Five45: really look at the pages of art, there are clues spread throughout!
On the heels of New York Comic Con 2010, Com.X reveals that next year we’re going to get a more in depth look at three of the characters from Forty-Five45. Here’s an excerpt from the press release:
The first three books will expand upon the storylines featured in the original interviews of popular characters Blue Spear, X, and Skyline, respectively, and will consist of full-colour, 40-page, sequential art one-shots that will have significant impact in explaining the true nature of James Stanley’s quest and the impact it will ultimately have on the entire world.
Release Schedule:
Blue Spear – Written by Eddie Deighton and Andi Ewington. Illustrated by Cosmo White. To be published Spring 2011X – Written by Eddie Deighton and Andi Ewington and Rob Patey. Illustrated by Lee Carter. Due Fall 2011
Skyline – Written by Eddie Deighton and Andi Ewington. Artist TBA. Due Fall 2011
Seeing that Blue Spear is one of my favorite characters in Forty-Five45, I’m pretty eager to see how Eddie and Andi flesh him out from the little bit we found out about him in Forty-Five45. The only thing we know is that Yuji Tomakawa mysteriously received his powers during a fishing trip with his brother when they were children, and now he is a superhero in Shinjuku Tokyo. However the experience did more than just give him powers, as he is forever changed body and soul.
X is a former XoDos operative who used to “retire” specific individuals. After working with the administration for over 30 years, he quit for reasons of his own and is now in hiding. During his interview with James Stanley he warns him that another operative of XoDos named Lotus may be on the reporter’s trail.
Skyline is a hero with various powers, but he is also an immortal that is in mourning of his wife’s passing. During his interview with Stanley (which takes place at her grave site) they are attacked, and it seems as if someone has found a way past Skyline’s invulnerability. He does manage to get Stanley to cover before going off to deal with the attackers.
It looks like Com.X has plans to make 2011 a good year for comics, and for more on them click here! And just to get you ready I’ll leave you with some Blue Spear artwork!

It’s definitely a good read man. Surprised the hell outta me and the overall concept was just interesting to me and I will say that Blue Spear was one of the characters that I liked from the 45 interviews. Hopefully more from my top 10 will surface in one form or another.
