The Flash #756
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Christian Duce
Colors: Luis Guerrero
Letters: Steve Wands
Cover: Rafa Sandoval, Jordi Tarragona, Hi-Fi
When Flash decided to bring back one of his deadliest enemies all I could think was “Aw naw, Barry! What is you doin’!”. And now that he’s back, Reverse Flash is building his own team to take out the Scarlet Speedster, aptly named “The Legion of Zoom”. Williamson’s story here focuses on Zoom putting the team together and we get a few surprises along the way. He also has Barry make a hard choices that is going to affect his own family of speedsters and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out as Williamson prepares for his final arc of the series. The art team delivers a solid looking issue filled with dynamic and kinetic panels of action. 3/5
Far Sector #6
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: N.K. Jemisin
Artist: Jamal Campbell
Colors: Jamal Campbell
Letters: Deron Bennett
Cover: Jamal Campbell
Henson, Campbell, and Bennett hit us with yet another intense issue of Far Sector. Green Lantern Jo Mullein’s investigation has rocked this alien planet and every reveal keeps making this a series worth coming back to. From the action to the sociopolitical problems, everything plays out as a great sci-fi detective drama and it feels like no other Green Lantern comic out right now. Jemisin’s world building is rich and she’s created the perfect mix of strange and familiar and Jo is even more of a great character since last issue’s dip into her background. From Jemisin’s storytelling to Jamal Campbell’s stellar artwork, Far Sector not only stands on it’s own but above the rest! 4/5
Batman #92
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: James Tynion IV
Art: Guillem March
Colors: Tomeu Morey & David Baron
Letters: Clayton Cowles
Cover: Tony Daniel & Tomeu Morey
The prelude to The Joker War continues and we get the first half of the grand design right here! Tynion has Batman and The Designer walk us through and then hits us with a pretty solid twist about the mysterious new villain. And though we knew how things would play out in the end the actual journey there was pretty satisfying. It’s also nice that even though the bad guys know Batman’s secret identity he makes the distinction between Bruce Wayne and Batman when referring to himself. Solidifying that they are truly two different individuals. It’s Tynion’s attention to the small details that help with this a fun read. Harley and Punchline’s meeting last issue gets bloodier here and from what Tynion has set up the two have potential for a great rivalry down the road. The art is as dark and gritty as the narrative here and makes for a great pairing from beginning to end. So now the bad guys have Batman on the ropes and hopefully the Joker War exceeds expectations! 3.5/5
Suicide Squad #6
Publisher: DC
Writer: Tom Taylor
Artist: Bruno Redondo
Colorist: Adriano Lucas
Letters: Wes Abbott
Cover: Bruno Redondo & Marcelo Maiolo
Everyone knows that when you need street level nefarious acts done you go straight to Gotham. Everyone also knows that if you’re in Gotham doing these acts you’ll eventually cross paths with Batman. A problem that the Squad soon runs into and one that Tom Taylor makes for one of the best stories to come out this week! The dialogue is consistently filled with a great mix of humor and character depth that gives this team dynamic something worth coming back to month after month. Also, Taylor has Wink pull a hilarious joke on Batman that doubly pays off in the end. Aside from the jokes and the action in the issue it’s the brief moment of compassion that we didn’t see coming that really add to the story and for what I hope is a focus on Deadshot in the coming issues. Redondo and Lucas’ visuals are excellent and they put together one of the best Deadshot vs Batman fights we’ve seen in a long time. A must buy! 5/5
