Contest of Champions (CoC) Episode #9: Volstagg vs. Gladiator

Welcome to Contest of Champions (CoC) Podcast, Episode #9! CoC is an interactive player vs. player game where your favorite Marvel characters go head to head to answer the eternal question of “who can beat whom in a fight?”

Join Jeff Jackson and Ian Johnson every week as they welcome two team managers who have a stable of five characters each ready to blast, zap, snikt, thwip, and smash their way to be the last one standing! It’s a little bit fan fiction, a little bit debate, a little bit role playing, and a whole bunch of fun! It’s an interactive adventure for the managers, and for the ComicAttack.net community.

This week, we’re joined by Andy Liegl, Tom McNeely, and Infinite Speech!

First, we want to remind you, if you are a comic artist, and you would like to provide a sketch or drawing of the characters battling this week, please send a link to your sketch to jeff@comicattack.net. We would love to spotlight your stuff!

Next, on this episode we shared our weekly Fights of the Week! Andy was a little bitter to see Rogue vs. Ms. Marvel in Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #7 by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, especially since Ms. Marvel didn’t freak out like she did in the fight against Protector. Jeff is liking the pick up of the action in The Walking Dead #89 by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, where Nicholas smacks down Glenn, but then Rick and company show their teeth. Ian highlighted Journey Into Mystery #628 by Kieron Gillen and Whilce Portacio, where Loki’s gang of demons call on the Disir to take out a guy named the Tongue and a sword gets popped in his head. Tom doesn’t like the new DC 52, but really dug the pre-reboot Green Arrow #15 by James Patrick and Agustin Padilla, where Ollie bluffs a ton of baddies with a regular arrow and saves the day. Finally, ‘Speech has the most disturbing fight of the week from Vescell #2 by Enrique Carrion and John Upchurch, where a hit man gets a VIBRATOR TO THE EYE! I kid you not.

Most importantly, here’s the show:

  1. Eli

    Well, this is one I don’t think we’ll ever see in comics, its just too one sided. There’s just no comparison.

    Voluminosity = advantage Volstagg

    Appetite = advantage Volstagg

    Sword = advantage Volstagg

    Really, how does Kallark stand a chance here?

  2. InfiniteSpeech

    “Mommy, why don’t we have any black friends?” LMAO! Thanks Andy!

  3. Billy

    I’ve thought about a way Volstaag can win…he eats Gladiator! 😀

  4. Eli

    I had the exact same thought Billy! What a way to go… slurped down by Volstagg.

  5. Moses

    I’m waiting for some compelling scenarios from Andy where Volstagg can hold his own and defeat Gladiator.

    Ok, sorry this is so late, but here goes:

    How Volstagg seems to be the beneficiary of luck in fights:

    How Volstagg is always up for a battle:

    And the easiest way Volstagg could win:

    Ok, so how this goes down. Volstagg gets amped for battle. Gladiator underestimates his opponent with his bravado. Flies in for the kill. ‘Stagg takes the hit, but when he loses his grip on his sword, it soars wildly through the air, and ends up piercing Gladiator.

    Shocked that he’s wounded, and Stagg is still standing, Volstagg uses the opening to charge his opponent. With the strength of that to lift a colossus, Volstagg punches Gladiator. He reels from the hit. ‘Stagg then body slams him and doesn’t move.

    Gladiator is pinned. Trapped. Subdued.

    +1 Stagg
