Contest of Champions podcast episode #2: Dr. Doom vs. Black Bolt

Welcome to Contest of Champions (CoC) Podcast, Episode #2! CoC is an interactive player vs. player game where your favorite Marvel characters go head to head to answer the eternal question of “who can beat whom in a fight?”

Join Jeff Jackson and Ian Johnson every week as they welcome two team managers who have a stable of five characters each ready to blast, zap, snikt, thwip, and smash their way to be the last one standing! It’s a little bit fan fiction, a little bit debate, a little bit role playing, and a whole bunch of fun! It’s an interactive adventure for the managers, and for the Comicattack.net community.

First, we want to thank Decapitated Dan for his digital assist on the CoC logo! Thanks Dan!

Second, if you are a comic artist, and you would like to provide a sketch or drawing of the characters battling this week, please send a link to us at jeff@comicattack.net. We would love to spotlight your stuff!

Third, on this episode we shared our weekly Fights of the Week! These were cool fights we saw in the books we read this past week. Jeff laughed out loud at Deadpool vs. a Purifier in Fear Itself: Uncanny X-Force #2 by Rob Williams and Simone Bianchi. Ian and Eli both really liked Wolverine vs. Iron Fist (and subsequently Squirrel Girl vs. Wolverine) in New Avengers #15 by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato, and also saw the fight in different ways. Dan loved Robbie Robertson laying the smack down on the new Hobgoblin in Spider-Island: Deadly Foes #1 by Dan Slott and Giuseppe Camuncoli. What was your fight of the week?

Fourth, and most importantly, here’s the show:

Boy, oh, boy…this is a toughy. I’m looking forward to lots of comments to help me make my mind up!

  2. SpidermanGeek

I want to point out a common misconception about Black Bolt’s main offensive power. His “scream” is NOT sonic based like Banshee’s. His electron-harnessing ability is linked to the speech center of his brain, not his vocal cords. Because of this, Black Bolt has been shown to be able to use his power even in the vacuum of space.

  3. SpidermanGeek

    Great defensive abilities too.

Particle & Electron Manipulation: Black Bolt can also direct the unknown particle outwards without the use of his vocal chords. He can route the particles through his arms and create small yet vastly powerful blasts of concussive force. He can also form a field of highly active electrons around his body with a wave of his hand. This field can deflect projectiles like the mass of a large meteor. Black Bolt can also create enough iteration between the electron and particle energies to generate fields solid enough for him to travel over.

  4. SpidermanGeek

Inhuman Physiology: Like all Inhumans, Black Bolt’s natural physiology grants him a number of superhuman physical attributes but because of the genetic tampering at birth, Black Bolt’s physical abilities are significantly superior to the other members of his race.

  5. SpidermanGeek

The oil Platform is home to a crew 185 workers who run constant Emergency Evacuation drills. They utilise the Selantic Skyscape Evacuation System which are a series of escape chutes that lead directly to inflateable rafts on the ocean waters.

The whole platform can be evacuated in a matter of minutes. This is why I chose this environment. It contains the least likely scenario of Black Bolt needing to hold back to avoid injury to innocent bystanders. He merely needs to hold off his most devestating attacks for a few minutes before cutting loose on the oil rig.

  6. Capeliller

I really like the way you set the fight up Jeff. Looks great!

  7. Kristin

Well, let’s see. Black Bolt can destroy everything, including Doom, just by opening his mouth. However, if Doom is able to prepare before hand knowing he’s facing Black Bolt, he could simply invent something that nullifies Black Bolt’s power. In which case, Doom could easily win.

  8. SpidermanGeek

Unless Doom can invent something that nulifies all matter particles and electrons in the environment, there’s no way he can stop Black Bolt’s power. As mentioned previously, Black Bolt doesn’t need to use his vocal cords to project his power, he can do it through his hands or any other part of his body.

  9. SpidermanGeek

I’m also not convinced that Doom’s mind transfer thing would work so easily on Black Bolt.

Telepathy: Black Bolt has incredibly powerful telepathic abilities as evident when he was able to easily resist the mental abilities of his powerful brother, and on different occasions, use his own abilities to overpower and take control over Maximus’ mind.

  10. Eli

@ Kristin – Yes, Black Bolt could scream his little head off at everything, but he’d kill all of the oil rig workers. Black Bolt wouldn’t murder all of those people for a fight. Especially a fight that doesn’t have anything to do with the advancement or protection of the Inhumans. This is just a fight for fight’s sake, for the ego of the two men, and Black Bolt wouldn’t sacrifice all of those lives.

About the Mind Transference: This is NOT TELEPATHY. It is a possession of another person’s body and mind by Doom. He is basically emptying his own body of himself, and pouring it into Black Bolt’s body. This isn’t a telepathic attack that Black Bolt can fight. Doom has done this to Sue, Johnny, and Ben of the Fantastic Four. When he took over Ben, he used Ben’s strength to break Johnny’s bones, and had him bent over his knee, poised to literally break him in half. Ben could not stop Doom from controlling his body. If Ben Grimm couldn’t stop Doom using his body to literally break one of his best friends in half, Black Bolt won’t be able to stop Doom either.

  11. Andy

This is what I’m struggling with:

In War of Kings, Black Bolt held back and did nothing for a long, long time. He knew that if he used his power to take down Vulcan, many innocents would die in the process. So he had to wait until he had him up close and personal.

So my question is- how would BB pull off nailing Doom with his power, but without killing the men on the rig too? …can he take Doom down without using his power?

  12. SpidermanGeek

As mentioned, he can keep Doom busy long enough for the 185 workers to evacuate the rig. This crew is trained on a regular basis to GTFO if shite hits the fan. It’s the reason I picked the environment. They slide down express chutes that drop them into 25 man rafts.

Without using his voice, and only his inhuman physiology and electron harnessing, BB has knocked Thing & Hulk on their asses. He can fly, has super speed and agility and can create forcefields capable of withstanding a meteor strike. He can shoot concussive blasts from his arms. He’s got a whole aresenal of defensive and offensive powers.

  13. SpidermanGeek

If Doom uses the transference and leaves his own body.. wouldn’t that mean that Doom is subdued? As Rorschach (Watchmen) would say: “I’m not locked in here with you you’re locked in here with me!”

One could argue that BB has Doom trapped in his own body, therefore, BB wins.

  14. SpidermanGeek

In Fantastic Four #508, when Dr.Doom was in Thing’s body about to break Johnny Storm in half.. Ben Grimm, who has zero telepathic resistance, was able to push his consciousness to the surface and instruct Reed to kill him. In other words, Doom CAN be resisted when attempting to control and already occupied body.

I did a research on the Ovoids methods, and it is never mentioned HOW this is done. It’s not scientific, it’s not mystic.. BUT, the Ovoids do possess psionic powers of telekenisis. One has to assume that mind transference is psionic/telepathic in nature.

I still stand by my statement that BB could theoretically resist Doom’s mind transference attack.

  15. SpidermanGeek

Closest we get to an explination of Ovoid Mind Transferrence was in Sensational She-Hulk #46, when She-Hulk asks the Ovoid to teach her how to perform the mind-transfer. She plans to swap bodies with Weezi in order to get a message to the Skrull ships in orbit. The Ovoid says he can do it almost instantly, since there isn’t any actual teaching involved… he simply has to use his mental powers to make some changes in She-Hulk’s brain. He completes the changes, and tells She-Hulk to concentrate on a mental image of the person she wants to trade minds with. She-Hulk focuses on Weezi…and then a few moments later she begins to feel dizzy and collapses.

HERE’S THE KICKER….Taryn asks the Ovoid what is wrong with Jen; he says he doesn’t know. He told her that THE TRANSFER COULD ONLY BE PERFORMED BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THE SAME SPECIES.

    Sorry for the yelling, lol.

That last part can’t be taken at face value though because one can argue the case that the inhumans are derived from the Earth Species of Humanoids. So theorietically, they are of human descent. But I am pointing out that there is a strong case for Ovoid mind transfer to be Telepathic in nature.

  16. SpidermanGeek

These contests stress me out, lol. There’s so much to learn about these characters though.. I’m having a blast!

    P.S. Dr. Doom sucks.

  17. Eli

Regarding the workers — Doom destroys the lifeboats with a couple of blasts from his gauntlets as the fight begins. The workers are then stuck on the rig with Doom and Black Bolt. This means that Black Bolt cannot use his voice without killing innocents, and Doom knows it.

About the mind transference — Ben got out a couple of words while he was inhabited by Doom (in FF #508 that Dan mentioned), but he NEVER GAVE UP HIS GRIP ON JOHNNY, he did not regain control of himself, he only managed to utter a few words, while Doom continued tobreak Johnny’s bones. This won’t do Black Bolt any good.

  18. Eli

Nice find on the Ovoid mind transfer thing Dan. I don’t see how its telepathic in nature, its a possession type of thing. Like a download of Doom’s mind into Black Bolt. He’s not trying to make a telepathic connection, or take over Black Bolt’s mind. He’s actually moving in.

Also, more about the species thing, I think humans and Inhumans are still the same species. I mean, Crystal (inhuman) had a baby with Quicksilver (human), and the kid came out OK.

  19. SpidermanGeek

Black Bolt did this to his brother Maximus (a powerful telepath). HHe could just as easily take Doom out this way.

  20. Eli

Has Black Bolt ever demonstrated any form of telepathy except on his own brother?? To my knowledge, he has never used it as an offensive attack on anyone. There’s no reason to believe that he’d do it here. He didn’t use it on Vulcan during their gigantic battle in War of Kings, he won’t use it on Doom here.

  21. SpidermanGeek

Black Bolt didn’t use this ability on Vulcan for the same reason Doctor Doom doesn’t just use Ovoid Mind-transferrence in every single one of his fights. Because it didn’t suit the writer.

And what Black Bolt did to Maximus wasn’t telepathy. It’s actually physical in nature. He can control and manipulate the electrical impulses flowing in the brain. So he can control motor fuction, but not emotions or thoughts.

  22. Eli

Doom has used his mind transference power in a fight, on multiple opponents.

When has Black Bolt ever used any of his telepathic or mind powers on anyone other than his brother? I don’t think he has. That can’t really be considered in this fight.

Also, Black Bolt’s fight with Vulcan was the MOST IMPORTANT FIGHT OF HIS LIFE. If he wouldn’t pull out all the stops for that one, he sure won’t do it here. Vulcan threatened to stop Black Bolt’s ultimate plan to bring peace to the entire galaxy. That is a perfect time to use any and all of your abilities to take down your opponent, yet Blackagar only used his energy powers to fight Vulcan.

There won’t be any telepathic or mind powers coming from Black Bolt.

  23. SpidermanGeek

Damn you argue a good fight. How did Black Bolt ever win past comeptitions. This guy can go toe to toe with Thing and Hulk. he can create objects out of thin air. He can fly. He can move as fast as quick silver. he can lift 75 tonnes. He can split a planet in half with his voice… yet, just because there are 185 people on an oil rig, you make it sound like he’d be completely impotent.

Black Bolt would knock Doom on his ass and not think twice about it. He’s just too powerful.

  24. Billy

Wow, great job guys…I’m going to listen to the podcast now! lol

  25. Billy

Here’s the thing for me. Doom has been taking people down for a looong time with a varied weapons, tactics, and magic. BB didn’t really get extremely pumped up that I saw until War of Kings. Before that, he never showed he was an “A” lister until that story. Doom has gone face to face with people more powerful than BB (Thanos, Galactus, Mephisto). BB is very powerful and durable, but he’s not even close to Doom’s level in combat strategy, and just plain intangibles. Doom +1 (oh, and Doc Strange said Doom knows things that he doesn’t because Doc Strange won’t dabble in those dark arts, and Doom will…just sticking up for the Doc)!

  26. Billy

    P.S. Moon Knight sucks! 😀 😀

  27. Eli

Great points Billy, and thanks. Be sure to vote in the poll.

  28. Rem The Dude

I still have doubts that Doom’s mind transfer would work on BB, being that he is an inhuman. I think that there is at least a possibility that inhumans are just different enough that the mind transfer would either not work at all, or at most have a limited effect. There are plenty of human-alien/supernatural hybrid characters in the Marvel U, so clearly the rules of genetics are a bit skewed, but that does not mean the same loose rules apply to the way different species’ minds work. The way in which an inhuman’s mind works could be just alien enough to hamper the mind control.

Also, with the fact that The Thing was able to speak while under the mind tranfer, having no mental or psychic training, leads me to believe that Black Bolt would be able to do the same. And seeing as all he has to do to unleash a considerable amount of pain upon doom is speak, I would imagine that if he were put in that position, he would be able to muster up enough willpower to speak loudly enough to take out doom as a last resort, rather than be mentally murdered or taken over completely by doom, regardless of any civilians that may or may not be trapped on the oil platform.

  29. SpidermanGeek

Thanks for chiming in Rem. I was beginning to think there was no love for Black Bolt, lol.

  30. Schitd'k

While Doom has been taken down many times before, it is rarely at the hands of just one superhero, but of an entire team of superheroes (Fantastic Four, Avengers). One of Black Bolt’s greatest strengths has always been his allies (the Inhumans, the Fantastic Four, the Illuminati). Black Bolt would be at a disadvantage since this is a one-on-one fight, and he would not be able to rely on these allies; where as Dr. Doom has always relied solely on Dr. Doom?

Also, Black Bolts electron manipulating abilities were effectively subdued when he captured and imprisoned by the Skrulls (the Illuminati). Seeing as Doom once built a time machine, he couldn’t he easily improvise a way to nullify Black Bolt’s electron manipulating abilities with his superior intellect and magic powers, especially with an entire 1.2 million ton mechanical oil rig at his disposal (which can store 1.3 million barrels of oil, and would be full of computers and machines). Or Doom could just use his intelligence and magic to manipulate the entire oil rig into a giant weapon. He would simple use a life like Doom Bot to distract Black Bolt while he built these weapons, or blow the entire structure (along with Black Bolt) sky-high while he was miles away from the actual battle ground.

Plus Doom knows how to ride a unicorn (https://comicattack.net/2011/02/marvsnap-doom/ ).

  31. Eli

Nice points Rem The Dude, but here’s what I would say to them:

The Inhumans are humans. Humans who have been altered a bit. The Fantastic Four are also humans who have been altered a bit. Ben Grimm’s entire body is made of rock, including his brain, and Doom was able to get into him just fine. And again, this is not a mind attack, its a complete transference of one person into another.

About Black Bolt using his voice while Doom is in him, what good will that do? If Doom is already inside of Black Bolt’s body, who is Black Bolt going to hurt IF he manages to use his voice? Nobody.

Remember, the Inhumans are human beings who have been altered, but they are still human. They can reproduce (have a baby together) between human and Inhuman, so they are compatible.

Dr. Doom goes inside of Black Bolt’s body and owns him.

  32. Rem The Dude

Ah, I was under the impression that when The Thing had spoken while under Doom’s control he had done so with his own body, not Doom’s. If it was Doom’s body that BB would have the possibility to make speak I agree, it would have no effect. OR does Doom’s body disappear during the mind transfer?

  33. Eli

No, no, it was Ben’s own body. Its not a mind switch, its just that Doom joins Black Bolt in his own body — and then takes over. During this process nobody is in Doom’s body. With Doom’s robotic abilities, his armor will take his body away to safety until Doom recalls it so he can hop back in.

So, even if Black Bolt gets anything out, it wouldn’t do any good. Also, whereas Ben was able to speak a few muttered whispers, thats all he was able to do. He couldn’t make himself stop hurting Johnny, and Black Bolt won’t be able to do anything to Doom since he’ll be inside Blackagar’s own body.

  34. Spion

Surely a few whispers from Black Bolt while possessed is all he needs. As he’s facing Doom while being “controlled” (I’m not convinced) he whispers ‘Die’ or ‘Blow’ and Doom’s uninhabited body disintegrates 🙂

  35. Capekiller

Spion is well versed at using Blackbolt in these games…..(Damn him!!!!)

  36. Eli

Sorry Spion, that wouldn’t do it either, here’s why.

    1. As Dan already pointed out in the podcast, Doom can withstand some hits from Black Bolt. How many, who knows, but he has withstood more powerful blasts than Black Bolt’s voice (like an Infinity Gauntlet-fueled blast from Thanos) and gotten right back up. If Dan thinks he can take some shots of Black Bolt’s most powerful weapon, what are a few “whispers” going to do? Nothing.

    2. Whats more… Doom’s body will be moving, not standing still. Don’t forget that Doom is one of the (if not THE) foremost experts on robotics in the world. He has created TONS of robots that have artificial intelligence, and have no need of being in direct contact with Doom to perform their function in his plans. Doombots anybody…??? Doom’s armor operates on its own and stays out of harm’s way until its needed again. How many times have people thought they’ve got Doom cornered or killed only to find out that they’ve been fighting a Doombot made to look and think like Doom.

  37. Billy

Love this back and forth! Keep it going!!!

  38. SpidermanGeek

So…. What you’re saying is: Black Bolt wins!

    Gotcha.

  39. Jeff

How many times can we get Eli to say “Doom will be inside Black Bolt’s own body?”

  40. Eli

    Settle down Jeff…

@ Dan – Exactly, Dr. Doom wins.

  41. Dale

Finally got to listen to the podcast, great battle guys. Looks like it is everything we’ve come to expect from CoC plus the new live aspect.
I went into this battle with a definite favorite, but Eli and Dan have definitely given me some things t think about. Good luck all

  42. Tom

Guys, this is a championship-level bout in the first match! I’m still trying to come to a decision. Great job arguing your points, though!

  43. Andy

Woah! I checked a few hours ago and Doom was down by 2…not anymore! I love this game.

Can’t wait to murder Doc Strange later and get my revenge from COC IV.

  44. Billy

    @Andy-…pfft, like that’s gonna happen.

  45. Jeff

Only an hour and a half left to vote! Thanks for all the participation!!!

  46. Legendary Dough

What if doom destroys that antenna above his brow. It enables him to use his energy conversion powers. With that being destroyed he can’t use that set of powers, but only his vocal cord powers but with destructive results. So he could do more damage then he wants to do, and wit the person above adding that doom would destroy all getaway boats to secure the advantage with the crew having to stay aboard. Also the inhumans are vulnerable to the earthly diseases and pollution due to their isolated environment. Look at the fights going down at. An oil rig which is possibly polluted with fumes and oil itself. With that fact out and inhuman would either have to make an exit…or he would fall sick. Reed Richards concocted a serum for that weakness, but for it to work. It must be taken daily. So with that being said…we’ve got 100% Doom and at least 2 doombots before you get to face the real Doom…going against a 60% maybe less Black Bolt. Now we have a pure genius going into effect right now. Knowing what he’s gettin himself into. So his already souped up armor, which gives him abilities that of any of the top tier super heroes out should be decked out. Able to withstand sonic waves of mass proportion. Not only would Black Bolt be dealin with doom the invetor and destroyer, but a powerful sorcerer which I think goes under the radar a lot. Doom is a genius in physics, robotics, cybernetics, genetics, weapons technology, bio-chemistry, and time travel.Doom is also self taught in the mystic arts and is a master sorcerer up there with the likes of doctor strange. He’s a deceiver and a brilliant strategist. I think he will pull off the win.

  47. savage nitty

Dr Doom uses nanobots to incapacitate Blackbolt’s voice then goes for the kill

  48. Billy

Wow, great turnout! Congrats to both guys for a spectaculor fight!
