Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 03/05/14

Action Comics #29 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. A great end to Pak & Kuder’s first arc. These guys show why Action is the top Superman comic.

Adventure Time The Flip Side #3 (Boom!)
NickZ: The crazy fun adventure continues with even more of a flippin’ good time!

Afterlife With Archie #4 (Archie)
Infinite Speech: Nothing more moving than a boy and his dog trying to survive a zombie apocalypse.

Archer & Armstrong #18 (Valiant)
Jeff: The fact that this is crossing over into a different Valiant title pisses me off.

The Auteur #1 (Oni Press)
Jeff Lake: What the hell did I just read? Original, no doubt, but oooooout there.

Bad Blood #3 (Dark Horse)
Jeff: I’m still surprised that no one has thought of this concept before now.

Batman/Superman Annual #1 (DC)
Arnab: Pak absolutely kills it on this issue.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Great interactions among members of the Bat & Supes families. Inconsistent art w/ 3 different artists.

Batwing #29 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Batwing is a solid series that’s being kept in the dark for too damn long.

burn the orphanage 3Burn the Orphanage #3 (Image)
Arnab: Damn good shit right here. Action, adventure, friendship, romance, this book has everything and anything you want.
NickZ: If you love video games, comic books, and rad s*#t, you MUST read BtO. Catch up on the first volume “Born to Lose” before the series goes monthly in May with “Reign of Terror”.

Day Men #3 (BOOM!)
Arnab: I wish this came out more regularly. Half the time I’m struggling to remember which family is which.
Jeff: I want to like this book, but it’s so damn wordy.

Evil Empire #1 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: So did NOT expect that ending! Definitely picking up the second issue!

Forever Evil #6 (DC)
Arnab: There’s just way too much stuff that’s still unresolved, which is unacceptable considering how long it’s been going on.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Awesome finally seeing Luthor’s gang take on the Crime Syndicate. But so much left for only 1 more issue.
NickZ: Some crazy action finally goes down! Lots to wrap up with just one more issue.

Forever Evil: Arkham War #6 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Really strong art backed by a story that’s about people punching each other. Again. Over and over.

Green Arrow #29 (DC)
Martin:
4.5/5 stars. The Outsiders’ War continues to heat up, making this run one of the best in the character’s history.

Invincible Universe #11 (Image)
NickZ: The Guardians of the Globe get pretty easily defeated by some lizard people. Still better than Justice League.

Jupiter’s Legacy #4 (Image)
Jeff: I openly admit that Frank Quitely is one of my favorite artists.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Story jumps 9 years into the future. Seems it’s been that long since last issue came out. What was going on?

Loki: Agent of Asgard #2 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: I enjoy a good heist story so this is a promising start.
Infinite Speech: Thought this was going to be a horrible book. Looks like I was wrong.
Jeff: This book is such a pleasant surprise. Twists and turns around every corner.
NickZ: Loki goes speed dating for his newest mission disguised as John Travolta?

magneto 1Magneto #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This issue shows why you should be lucky Magneto didn’t go into dentistry.
Jeff: A brutal Magneto is an awesome Magneto.
Jeff Lake: A darker take on the Master of Magnetism that wasn’t quite as gripping as I hoped it would be.
NickZ: This book is much better than expected. Magneto’s character continues to evolve and I’m totally on board!

Moon Knight #1 (Marvel)
Jeff: Um…I was on board until the end. That was…weird.
Jeff Lake: When did Moon Knight get this cool? Top pick of the week for me.
NickZ: Ellis and Shalvey didn’t disappoint on this rebirth of Moon Knight. It’s everything you wanted and more!

The Movement #10 (DC)
Dr. Bustos: Batgirl can take on most of The Movement in a reactionary attack, sounds about right.

New Warriors #2 (Marvel)
Jeff: Yost has got the Warriors down. Can’t wait to see where this goes.
NickZ: New Warriors is to Chris Yost books as The Avengers movie is to the other Marvel Studios movies. Best team book since Young Avengers and they haven’t even officially formed yet.

Nova #14 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: A lot of palling around with Nova and Beta Ray Bill and little story movement.
Jeff: David Baldeon needs to be on this book for a while, but he needs to redesign Sam’s helmet.

Punisher #3 (Marvel)
Jeff: It’s good to see Punisher take some licks from Electro.

Quantum and Woody: Goat #0 (Valiant)
Jeff Lake: The origin we didn’t know we needed and we’re so lucky to have gotten. Pure awesomeness.

She-Hulk #2 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: I am really enjoying what this series is setting up.

Tales of Honor #1 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech:
Sci-fi fun that has me reading the novels now!

Turok #2 (Dynamite)
Infinite Speech: Two issues in and I’m hooked! So glad Turok is back on the shelves!

unxm 18Uncanny X-Men #18 (Marvel)
Arnab: The story was good. However, while the layouts were gorgeous, the chaotic art was far too big of a distraction.
Infinite Speech: Loved Marco Rudy’s panel breaks and overall artwork and though I may not like Cyclops, Bendis did well this issue.
Jeff: Sorry, but the art was just not for me.
NickZ: This was an awesome issue with some great insight into Cyclop’s thoughts on recent events and some great interaction between him and young Scott and Jean.

Velvet #4 (Image)
Jeff Lake: Slower than past issues but no less interesting. This is just a good series, period.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Some of the best art in comics backs a spot-on period spy story with a strong female lead. Pure awesome.

Wolverine & the X-Men #1 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos:
This new student fascinates me.
Infinite Speech: Did we REALLY need another number 1 issue? Hell no but this was a pretty good issue regardless.
Jeff: This felt like a good continuation of the last volume.
NickZ: I think this new creative team has done a vast improvement to this series by grounding it more in reality and making the characters much less annoying.
