Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 1/16/13

All-New X-Men #6 (Marvel)
Andy: @DaveMarquez hit every beat in this issue. Especially with Angel(s) and kid Cyke blasting Wolverine. (4.5/5)#MarvelNOW #XMen
Arnab: This book rocks all kinds of socks. With every issue though, Beast is coming off more and more of a dick for doing this. A
Infinite Speech: Definitely exceeding all of my expectations!
Jeff:
David Marquez is perfect on a book like this. Just switch him and Immonen out and this book will always be good!
NickZ: This book is an X-Men fan’s wet dream.

Ame-Comi Girls: Power Girl #4 (DC)
Andy: Weakest issue so far — felt like it could have been 1/3 the length. Great cover, though. (1.5/5) #PowerGirl

Archer & Armstrong #6 (Valiant)
Andy: I’m in love with the new Geomancer. (4/5) #Valiant
Infinite Speech: My surprise favorite Valiant title keeps on surprising me!
Jeff: A perfect introduction to this new Geomancer and a great new addition to this cast. You should be reading this book!

Avengers Assemble #11 (Marvel)
Andy: This was an enjoyable arc. Looking forward to DeConnick’s swing at the next one. (3/5) #Avengers

Avenging Spider-Man #16 (Marvel)
Jeff: Ah, Paco Medina, how I’ve missed you! Well done on making this book look fantastic!
NickZ: Chris Yost and Paco Medina are just what the doctor ordered for this book.
Andy: Some funny one liners and a creative way of tapping into the rogues galleries of both Spidey and the #XMen. (3/5) #SpiderMan

Batgirl #16 (DC)
Andy: A solid tie-in. Knew it wouldn’t happen, but I so wanted Babs to off The Joker once and for all. (4/5) #Batgirl
Arnab: James Jr. takes the cake for Crazy King in this issue. That boy’s screws aren’t just loose, they’re missing. A-
NickZ: I don’t know who is the craziest person in this issue, Joker, Batgirl, or James Gordon Junior?

Batman #16 (DC)
Andy: The advance reviews speak truth — this issue is insane and packed with Bat-lore. (4.5/5) #Batman
Arnab: Oh the horses, those poor horses. In other news, Joker’s still gruesome as ever and Batman’s still pretty awesome. A
Infinite Speech: He had me at the punching of the horse.
Jeff:
Ok, I was thinking this issue was awesome until the “tapestry of living bodies.” It got a little too ridiculous for me.
NickZ: If what I think is in that serving dish turns out to be right, I don’t know what I’ll do.

Batman and Robin #16 (DC)
Andy: Damian shows his true colors. A worthy tie-in. (3.5/5) #Batman #Robin
Arnab: Damian goes through hell pretty much sums it up. A-
NickZ: Joker messes with Robin, but good!

The Black Beetle #1 (Dark Horse)
Andy: This series is Francesco Francavilla’s passion project and it shows — fun, stylistically sexy stuff. (4/5) #indiecomics

Bloodshot #7 (Valiant)
Andy: Man. I feel really bad for Bloodshot. A necessary precursor to #HarbingerWars. (3.5/5) #Bloodshot
Infinite Speech: Can it get any worse for our “hero”?

Caligula: Heart of Rome #2 (Avatar)
Andy: So fucked up! And that’s what makes it so great. (3.5/5) #Caligula

Captain America #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Remember when Cap was lost in time? This story may have worked better then. Kid Cap’s cute, though. (2/5) #CaptainAmerica #MarvelNOW

Captain Marvel #9 (Marvel)
Dr. Bustos: She and Spider-Woman fight dinosaurs, of course I love this. A+

Conan the Barbarian #12 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Holy shit — Brian Wood has totally made me a Conan fan. One of the most original S&S comics I’ve read. (4.5/5) #Conan

Daredevil #22 (Marvel)
NickZ: The Superior Spider-Man shows up to take down Daredevil but then the story gets predictable.

Fanboys vs. Zombies #10 (Boom!)
Arnab: I can’t get over how much fun this series is. I love it.

Fashion Beast #5 (Avatar)
Andy: So weird. So dark. So bothersome. So hideous. Yet I can’t look away. (3/5) #FashionBeast

Ferals #12 (Avatar)
Andy: All hell breaks loose and it was awesome. A must read for every fan of #werewolves. (3.5/5) #Ferals

Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #16 (DC)
Andy: A lackluster finale for an excellent series. Going to miss this book. Also, Velcoro’s not dead? (2.5/5) #Frankenstein
Dr. Bustos: What happen to Rot World? I’m just glad to see the team back together. A

Indestructible Hulk #3 (Marvel)
Jeff: This one-and-done storytelling that Waid is doing is superb! Love these individual stories and this status quo continues to suit the Hulk.
Andy: So far in my life this is turning out to be the best Hulk book I’ve ever read. (4/5) #Hulk

Legion Lost #16 (DC)
NickZ: The Legion, Ravagers, Superboy, and Harvest team up to save the world, but are their efforts enough?

New Avengers #2 (Marvel)
Andy: This was phenomenal and proves how Hickman has raised the bar for superhero comics. (4.5/5) #MarvelNOW #Avengers
Infinite Speech: I really hope Hickman has Black Panther attempt to follow up his threat to Namor!
Jeff: There’s no way these characters would use the Infinity Gauntlet. They’d find another way.

Saga #9 (Image)
Andy: I probably would have killed that cat a long time ago. (4/5) #Saga
Arnab: I feel like when The Will decides to team up with Marko, Alana, and Hazel, I can start liking him more. Oh yea, and that cover by Fiona Staples? Hot. A
Dr. Bustos: That intro made me so happy and then so sad. A
Infinite Speech: So the ex shows up so you KNOW it’s going to hit the fan real soon! Poor Marko!
Jeff: The Will was my top new character for 2012, and I think he’s going to retain that top spot in 2013.
NickZ: None of the main cast are even in this issue and it still kicks the @$$ of every other book out there.

Savage Wolverine #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Not a bad start but lots of exposition. Can’t wait for Cho to get rolling and really cut loose. (2.5/5) #WolverineI
Infinite Speech: Was there really a need for yet another Wolverine book? Even with Cho’s great visuals I wasn’t too impressed.
Jeff: Did I miss how Wolverine got to the Savage Land? This was not a strong book.
NickZ: Pretty much what it says, Wolverine in The Savage Land.

Superboy #16 (DC)
NickZ: Superboy and the Justice League attempt to take back the Fortress of Solitude, but things don’t turn out how they hoped.

Todd the Ugliest Kid on Earth #1 (Image)
Andy: I like the cut of Todd’s jib. (3.5/5) #indiecomics
Infinite Speech: Okay, not what I expected but still fun!

Wolverine Max #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: More tales of Wolverine’s past. *yawn*

X-Factor #250 (Marvel)
Andy: If this was confusing, go back and read the #XForce run before the first #UncannyXForce series. (3.5/5) #XFactor
Arnab: Look, when everyone from an extremely large cast returns, shits about to go down. A-
Jeff: So the gang is all here as PAD finally ties up the Tier story. Looking forward to this story.
NickZ: A lot of old story lines come to a head and pretty much everyone returns.

X-Men #40 (Marvel)
Jeff: I have to say Seth Peck has been rocking this book these past few issues. Wish he was continuing.
NickZ: Storm and her team try to help out another new mutant but run into some problems, not unlike a million other X-Men stories.
Andy: It’s OK, but feels forced knowing the series ends soon. And Iceman came off very strange. (2/5) #XMen

Never thought I’d see the day where Jeff says, “You should be reading this book!” about a Valiant title. Hell hasn’t frozen over, right?

    1. InfiniteSpeech

A&A is a damn good title! And he was soooo hesitant to give it a shot too!

      1. Jeff

Actually, I wasn’t hesitant to pick it up. I saw that David Aja variant cover and was immediately interested, and when I knew Van Lente and Henry were doing it, I was sold. But I’m as surprised as anyone that I’m reading and liking a Valiant book. But it’s all about the creative team for me. I love Van Lente, Henry, and Luppachino!
