Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 10/01/14

Action Comics #35 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Pak provides a more thoughtful aftermath to the Doomed story. Kolins & Cifuentes are good fill-ins for Kuder.
NickZ: Superman returns to Earth following the events of “Doomed” and questions his place in the world with help from Lois, Lana, and Bruce.

adventure time 32Adventure Time #32 (Boom)
NickZ: Finn keeps traveling forward in time without any memories of his past due to a memory eating creature. Fans of the show won’t want to miss these interesting futures.

Angel & Faith #7 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: Faith reminds everyone that she is a badass while on a search and rescue mission in the jungle.

Batman: Detective Comics #35 (DC)
Arnab: I was bummed when I found out Manapul and Buccellato weren’t on this issue. But man, that was a great issue.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Manapul & Buccellato take a break & a new team deliver a creepy, moody, atmospheric detective story.
NickZ: The art and story matched up to make this a really great issue, plus very timely. #Ebola

Batman Eternal #26 (DC)
Arnab: But what happened to Hush’s origin?!? Grrr
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. A solid issue with some great Stephanie Brown scenes & the Bat Family reuniting. Julia as Penny 2 is fun.
NickZ: Terrible art happens as we get reacquainted with Hush’s past, while his plans in the future move forward, to Alfred’s detriment.

Batman/Superman #14 (DC)
Arnab: Excellent issue. Catwoman is just great.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Suffers from the Futures End interruption, but shows a fun scenario w/ Bruce & Clark losing their memories.
NickZ: Catwoman corrupts a memory-less Superman, while Lois tries to help a memory-less Batman recapture his greatness. The Lois and Batman interactions make this issue great.

Bucky Barnes: Winter Soldier #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Ales Kot makes Bucky’s transition to space worth checking out.

Burn the Orphanage Reign of Terror #5 (Image)
NickZ: The Reign of Terror comes to an explosive end, just as a new threat ignites.

Captain America #25 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Hey Marvel, spoilers so far in advance really suck the fun out of some books. This was one of them.

Death of Wolverine #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: So we’re going to act like that kiss didn’t happen? Possessed or not, it happened.
NickZ: Just die already! I bet he will be dead shorter than the time it takes to kill him.

Edge of Spider-Verse #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: Have you ever wonder what Spider-Man’s origin would be like if it was a Grimm’s Fairytale? This issue answers that question.

Fade Out #2 (Image)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. One of the best noir comics out there, in terms of characterization as well as setting. The creative team nail it.

Gotham Academy #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I only read it because I miss Five Weapons and Gladstone’s. The art was great but I’m not too sold on the story.
Martin: 3/5 stars. I think I’m supposed to say how much I love this, but I think I’m just tool old & my daughter is too young.
NickZ: Great art and a fun adventure, this series is going to be awesome!

grayson 3Grayson #3 (DC)
Arnab: Dick! HA! I love this book.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Another book critics seem to love but I just can’t get into. I’ll take Nightwing any day. Story’s still confusing.
NickZ: This was the best issue of this series so far and it had the best scene transition EVER! “That’s not my name. My name is…” “Dick!”

Green Arrow #35 (DC)
Arnab: Such a good cast pushed out by the tv show.
Martin: 2.5/5 stars. Sampere provides good art, albeit nothing as unique as before. Story tragically ignores Naomi, Fyff, & Emiko.

Justice League #34 (DC)
NickZ: Really great issue of the Justice League recovering from recent events and setting up Luthor for a major take down, or so they think.

The Li’l Depressed Boy #1 (Image)
NickZ: After a year and a half LDB is back! Great jumping on point for new readers!

Lobo #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I was more sold on the art than the direction of the story.

Moon Knight #8 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The way Wood and Smallwood chose to tell this story was smart and keeps up with how great this title has been.
NickZ: Love how they laid out this issue like video feed from cell phone cameras. Great art and the story was rad too.

New 52 Futures End #22 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Even more than Batman Eternal, this seems to have too many storylines that get short shrift each week.

Rat Queens #8 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Even when it’s not trying to, Rat Queens just keeps raising the bar!

Robocop #4 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: Williamson & Magno make me want another Robocop movie in THIS era of the franchise!

Tech Jacket #4 (Image)
Infinite Speech: There is so much sci-fi fun to be had with what Keatinge and Randolph are doing here!

Spider-Man 2099 #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: Peter David and co are doing a bang up job on this series, you should read it if you haven’t.

The Squidder #4 (IDW)
Martin: Stupid me, I was reading this without knowing it was the final issue. A somewhat abrupt ending but spectacular art.

tmnt 38Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #38 (IDW)
Arnab: 38 issues in and this series has not faltered for even a single issue. I know of no other book that could make such a claim.
Infinite Speech: This is a series that has done nothing but improve on itself with every issue!

Thor #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Aaron continues to kick butt on Thor regardless of who wields Mjolnir!

Uber #18 (Avatar)
Infinite Speech: So glad I took a chance on this title!
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. An interesting take on how to deal with the atomic bomb without making the so-called Ubers irrelevant.

Uncanny Avengers #25 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The road to Axis was getting better then the last couple of panels happened.
NickZ: Scarlet Witch reevaluates her relationship with her father as he goes into beast mode against Red Skull and his S-Men. Nothing good comes of either of these endeavors.

The Walking Dead #132 (Image)
Arnab: And somehow the ick and gross and traumatizing factor of this series has just gone up.
NickZ: Rick and Maggie have some nice moments while her men discover a disturbing surprise while out in the field.

Witchblade #178 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: How does Marz get lucky enough to work with all of these great artists?! Witchblade looks great and is still a damn good read!

Wonder Woman #34 (DC)
NickZ: Literally, war of the Gods! This series has been epic from start to finish.

X-Men #20 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Is it just me or are the X-Men a LOT cooler lately when in space?
NickZ: As if the Summers family tree wasn’t twisted enough…
