Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 6/22/2011

Action Comics #902 (DC)
NickZ: “Reign of the Doomsdays” is the first Superman story that I have liked in a very, very, very long time.

All Nighter #1 (Image)
Jeff: David Hahn hits all the emotional beats that make new characters interesting and relatable. You can even check this one out for free before you buy it!

Avatar: The Last Airbender Vol 1: The Lost Adventures TP (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech:
Great collection of short stories for any fan of the animated series!

Batman Gates of Gotham #2 (DC)
Arnab: So frakking awesome. Gotham’s past comes to life in the present as the mysteries of the Gates of Gotham are revealed.
NickZ: This one was a bit wordy, but it seems Scott Snyder can do no wrong. Can’t wait for issue 3.

Batman and the Outsiders #40 (DC)
NickZ: The end of the Outsiders civil war was kinda lame, but I am going to miss this series so much. *tear*

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #520 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
One of the best Black Panther stories from Liss so far! The interactions with Storm were very welcome and just perfect.

Brightest Day: The Search For Swamp Thing #1 (DC)
Andy: This was pretty weak, and failed to make Constantine interesting. Really chatty, but that’s about it. And since when is Dick such a…dick?

Cobra #2 (IDW)
Andy: Yes! This is the G.I. Joe we’ve all been waiting for! It’s violent, people die, and it lacks any cheese. If there’s one Joe book to read, make it COBRA.

Deadpool #39 (Marvel)
NickZ: Wow, Hulk really smashed Deadpool’s head like Letterman dropping a watermelon off the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater.

Fables #106 (Vertigo)
Andy: This is the best Fables has been in a very long time. Loved how Willingham dealt with Mr. Dark. After #100; this was the perfect way to resolve that situation.

Flashpoint: Kid Flash Lost #1 (DC)
Arnab: Started off rough, settled towards the end though.

Flashpoint Lois Lane and the Risistance #1 (DC)
Andy: Went in a skeptic, came out a believer. Nunez’s art reminds me a lot of Khary Randolph, which is cool.
NickZ: A cool, interesting story. It goes good with the Wonder Woman Flashpoint book if you are reading that one. (which you should be, it’s awesome!)

Flashpoint: The Outsider #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: The Outsider is one interesting character so far so I’m willing to check it out for 3 issues.

Flashpoint: Reverse Flash #1 (DC)
Andy: Not as essential as I thought it’d be. Did this tell us anything we didn’t already know? I don’t think so.
NickZ: This was a great book, especially since I don’t know a whole lot about Reverse Flash. Plus, Joel Gomez artwork is amazing.

Green Arrow #13 (DC)
Arnab: Brightest Day is over? Good riddance. This is some good Green Arrow shit right here.

Incredible Hulks #631 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
Be careful what you wish for because Bi-Beast, Wendigo, and Fin Fang Foom may show up for a throwdown! Great issue!

Iron Man 2.0 #6 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
When the main character becomes the sidekick in his own title you know something is wrong.

Justice League of America #58 (DC)
NickZ: If you want to know why Wonder Girl is wearing Donna Troy’s star costume in the DC relaunch, you might want to read this issue…I think.

Mystery Men #2 (Marvel)
Andy: Nobody is reading this book, which is a crime. It has absolutely nothing to do with the corny movie, and is pure crime fiction in the Marvel U.
Infinite Speech:
Okay Liss, I’m really feelin’ this title right here and every one else should be checkin’ it out as well!

Namor the First Mutant #11 (Marvel)
NickZ: Oh Namor, he loses the girl, loses his son, loses his own book, but keeps his douche like ways and fishy smell.

New Mutants #26 (Marvel)
Andy: Did a 5 year old riding a camel draw this? Solid story though. I like Moonstar in a leadership role.
Arnab: Awful art, just awful. Story is still interesting though.
Jeff: Help, this story needs a new artist! Quick!
NickZ: Can someone tell Sugar Man that if he wants to go home, all he has to do is hitch a ride with Dark Beast over in Uncanny X-Force.

Secret Avengers #14 (Marvel)
Jeff: Yet another pointless Fear Itself tie-in.

Superman #712 (DC)
NickZ: WTF!?! Has everyone heard about the drama with this issue? This is what we get instead? Weak sauce DC! And you wonder why people hate reading Superman.

Sigil #4 (CrossGen)
Andy: Campy pirate fun. I liked it and would read vol. 2. If you have a teenage daughter at home, buy her this TPB.

Star Wars: Jedi: The Dark Side #2 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Here I thought I had it all figured out after issue #1. It’s nice being wrong sometimes, and Scott Allie has my attention.

Thunderbolts: Fear Itself #159 (Marvel)
Andy: Hey, isn’t Juggernaut a T-Bolt? He is. So shouldn’t he be featured in the T-Bolts FI tie-in? He’s not. WTF.
Infinite Speech: Good collection of stories here but can someone tell Frank Tieri that brothas don’t say “oh snap!” or “bum rush” anymore. You’re about 20 years too late.

Ultimate Avengers vs. New Ultimates #5 (Marvel)
Andy: Mark Millar is done writing for Marvel soon? Maybe that’s not such a bad thing…

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #160 (Marvel)
Andy: A little pissed at the lack of face time for Iceman. Is this death a fake out? I’m not sure. If not, then well done, but if so, WTF.

Wolverine #11 (Marvel)
Andy: Jason Aaron is making it easy for people to get into Wolverine. This story line is everything the opening arc of Wolverine the Best There Is wished it could have been.
Jeff: Jason Aaron is so good at developing sympathetic villains. The Red Right Hand might be the best new group of baddies in Wolverine’s rogue gallery.
NickZ: Poor grandma Sabretooth, I hope Wolverine guts all these mofos.

X-Men Legacy #251 (Marvel)
Andy: This book is officially back on track. It’s worthy of every X-fan to give a go.
Arnab: Excellent stuff. Legion may be a hot mess, but he’s an immensely powerful hot mess.
Jeff: What is up with all the mediocre art in the X-books lately? This story would have been good if it had been drawn well.
NickZ: This is becoming my new favorite X-Men book. I’m really liking this Legion story and this group of characters!

You just stepped in a big ol’pile of Chirp.

Jeff, I thought you dropped Secret Avengers, you liar! 🙁

  2. Jeff

I did too, but since I order my books online, I had already committed to that one. But it’s officially dropped!

  3. InfiniteSpeech

Agree with Andy 100% about the artowrk in New Mutants. I’d rather it just be written as a novel if it’s going to have crappy artwork.

  4. Aron

Nick, you knucklehead, Snyder didn’t do anything with Gates of Gotham #2. All that comic book is doing is wearing a Scott Snyder t-shirt.

  5. Nick

Aron, I heard he outlined the entire story and the other dude just scripted it or whatever.
