Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 3/16/11

The Amazing Spider-Man #656 (Marvel)
Andy: Marcos Martin’s retro look on artwork are giving me some seriously positive vibes, dudes.
Aron: Dan Slott does it again. This series is amazing once again. And the bulletproof costume is cool.
Infinite Speech: Don’t really know what to think of the new suit’s look. Solid issue though as it’s going in a slightly different direction than what I thought.
Jeff: Martin is the reincarnated Steve Ditko. Wait, Ditko’s not dead?

Artifacts #6 (Top Cow)
Arnab: Well hot damn. It may just be that Whilce’s art has me confused, but there’s plenty death and action in this book.
Infinite Speech: This is just one damn good event that anyone can pick up and read and understand what the hell is going on!

Avengers Children’s Crusade: Young Avengers #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: Darn great stuff here. The writing is absolutely great. Must read for Young Avengers fans.
NickZ: Great issue, I liked both the past and future stories.

Batman #708 (DC)
Arnab: Fantastic art by Guillem March. The story was decent.
Aron: Team AZRAEL invades BATMAN and it is AWESOME! This is the finale that should have been in the pages of AZRAEL.
Infinite Speech: We’ve been dropped into the middle of something big & it requires a lot of guest appearances. Best confusingly fun issue so far!
NickZ: Coming off from reading Azrael, this seams like it’s going to be a really cool story. Also it features Red Robin and Catwoman!

Brightest Day #22 (DC)
Andy: Man, I have totally lost interest in this series. Early on I stood by it in the face of adversity, but now…it feels more lost than a pickle in spaghetti.
Arnab: Where did the Anti-Monitor go you ask? Right here.
Aron: Since issue #1, this series has flip-flopped from awesome to stupid. This issue was stupid. When’s it gonna end already?
Daniel: At least Deadman stopped his serial killer ways for one issue.
NickZ: With only 2 issues left I still can’t figure what this White Lantern is up to.

DC Universe Legacies #10 (DC)
NickZ: Overall I would say skip this series.

Doctor Who #2 (IDW)
Aron: SaaWEEEEET! Looks and reads like it came right off the screen! Doctor Who comics are cool.

Fear Itself Prologue: Book of the Skull #1 (Marvel)
Andy: A well done prologue of the Fear Itself event. Sin is one nasty b***h! Can’t wait to see how she messes with everyone in the issues to come…

Formic Wars: Burning Earth #3 (Marvel)
Andy: Finally, things get going with this series. The battle scene was well done, nicely showcasing the hive mentality of the Formics.

Generation Hope #5 (Marvel)
Arnab: I’m not sure if I think Hope rocks at this point or if she’s obnoxious.
Daniel: Finally! After the introductions we can move forward and get to the good stuff.
NickZ: Hope is getting a little too big for her britches, but I do enjoy the fact that she doesn’t like White Queen.
Jeff: I will fight your face off, Hope Summers. Getting really tired of her.

G.I. Joe: Infestation #2 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Pretty good issue that reinforces that Baroness is a real $%^&!

Hack/Slash #2 (Image)
Aron: Enjoyable. But, for $3.50?! Come on, Image! Get with the program. Quit being assholes!

Hulk #30.1 (Marvel)
Andy: Great choice to tie in Ross’ military background here. Jeff Parker and Gabriel Hardman have single handedly pulled a spectacular 180 on this character.

Iceman & Angel #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Surprise hit of the week! I loved it, even if it did feature Iceman.
Andy: The best of these X-origin one-shots so far! …even if it did feature Angel.

The Invincible Iron Man #502 (Marvel)
Andy: Fraction really excels with tightly focused stories on one or two major players. Where he’s treading water in Uncanny X-Men, he’s owning this book.

Iron Man 2.0 #2 (Marvel)
Andy: Far better than the first issue, but this is still my least favorite Nick Spencer book.
Daniel: This is what a War Machine book should be like.
Infinite Speech: The art is hit and miss but the story is still a good one. But did he really have to burst through the window, Spencer? That made no sense!

Knight And Squire #6 (DC)
NickZ: A good ending to a good series. If you didn’t read it, pick up the trade, you’ll be happy you did.

Loki #4 (Marvel)
Andy: This was a solid 4 issue mini-series starring Loki. Very well written, especially considering it was mostly a narrative.

Morning Glories #8 (Image)
Jeff: I love that Hunter can only see 8:13 on the clock. I don’t know what it means, but it’s really cool.

Northlanders #38 (Vertigo)
Aron: This issue contains the single greatest line of dialogue ever spoken in comics, probably in the history of ever.

Red Robin #21 (DC)
Arnab: The unternet has been shut down, or so Tim believes.
NickZ: I totally saw that ending coming. Also, I think Robin’s costume looks cooler when you can see his hair.

Ruse #1 (CrossGen)
Andy: Very well done, which was a pleasant surprise. I like the Victorian Era setting, and the art is sharp. So when can I expect to see the Sojourn reboot?

Soldier Zero #6 (BOOM! Studios)
Andy: Things are picking up nicely in this one thanks to Abnett and Lanning, although it may be better served with a $2.99 price tag. I read this in under 5 minutes.

Superman #709 (DC)
Andy: Cool concept to have an issue between Supes and The Flash take place in seconds, but emo Superman is getting on my nerves.
Aron: Lame, lame, lame, lame, LAME!
NickZ: Young Lex’s final line in the flashback perfectly illustrates the fundamental difference between Clark and Lex.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #5 (DC)
Andy: This is my favorite book by Nick Spencer. The twist in this issue took me by surprise, and the art is some of the best in DC right now.
Aron: Well, that was weird.
Arnab: Holey Moley Toby, er James. The action comes to a boiling point in this terrific issue.

Thunderbolts #155 (Marvel)
Daniel: Would Satana find Man-Things touch soothing?

Ultimate Comics Avengers vs. New Ultimates #2 (Marvel)
Andy: Loved the Tarantino-esque vibe of this issue. After a lackluster #1, things really heat up here. Can’t wait to see these two squads throw down. My money’s on Fury’s team.
Aron: This was way cooler than last issue. But, still, what’s this have to do with Spidey?

Uncanny X-Force #5.1 (Marvel)
Andy: After reading this, I feel like Charlie Sheen after a night out on the town…or a brothel: Amazing!
Arnab: It looks like the new X-Force might not remain a secret for long.
Aron: The story was kinda boring and wordy. I picked this up for the uncanny art of Rafael Albuquerque!
Infinite Speech: I always love a good Reavers story, but I think this issue could have been saved for a later day. It really didn’t have that “start here” vibe these .1 books are supposed to have.
NickZ: Psylocke has crossed over to the dark place.
Jeff: Shouldn’t this be #4.1? Fantomex to Skullbuster: “You don’t know me.” Ha!

Uncanny X-Men Annual #3 (Marvel)
Arnab: Hideous art aside, this issue was fairly amusing.
NickZ: Kinda a waste of an annual if you ask me.
Jeff: Stop making crap, Marvel. And someone teach Nick Bradshaw how the human face looks.

The Unwritten #23 (Vertigo)
Andy: This series is fantastic. It does with literature what Fables does with fairy tales. Just brilliant.

Warlord of Mars #5 (Dynamite)
Andy: A four armed, muscly, green alien just punched an eight-legged, red alien horse in the face. It was awesome.

X-Factor #217 (Marvel)
Andy: Peter David continues to make a case for one of the best X-runs of all time with this series. Also, Lupacchino draws hot, sexy ladies!
Arnab: The consistently excellent storytelling by Peter David continues.
NickZ: This book really got preachy, didn’t it? And really Guido, again?
Jeff: I loved the scene between Rictor and Shatterstar about the connection to Longshot.

Xombi #1 (DC)
Andy: This was the shockingly awesome read of the week. Fraser Irving’s art is cool as hell, and character names like “Nun of the Above,” “Nun the Less,” and “Catholic Girl” are fitting and hilarious.
Aron: This’s just weird, man.
Infinite Speech: Rozum returns to pen his Milestone classic with Frasier Irving and hasn’t lost a step! Xombie is all types of awesome!
