Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 12/8/10

Batgirl #16 (DC)
Andy: Is Steph getting a rogue all to herself? Nice!

Chaos War: Ares #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Been wondering what happened to Ares after he was torn-asunder by Sentry in Siege? Wonder no more!

Days Missing: Kestus #2 (Archaia Entertainment)
Andy: A fantastic issue all around. The art is gorgeous, and the story is taking the Steward to an all new level. This series is made for sci-fi fans who like a taste of history!

DCU Holiday Special 2010 (DC)
Arnab: A nice set of holiday stories celebrating diversity.

Detective Comics Annual #12 (DC)
Arnab: We finally get an issue where Bruce and Dick work together as the Batmen.

Fables #100 (Vertigo)
Andy: Congrats on hitting the century mark, Fables! A worthy anniversary issue jam-packed with cool stuff. Here’s to 100 more!
NickI: Pages and pages of epic battling! Can’t wait for 100 more issues of Fables.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #161 (IDW)
Andy: A step up with the violence, but a step down with the dialogue. The Joes feel like they’re trapped in 1990, and it’s not a good thing.
Infinite Speech: Starting to fizzle a bit but then again I’m not a Chuckles fan either; hopefully it picks up again in the next issue.

House of Mystery #32 (Vertigo)
NickI: Bad art in the Murder Mystery section of the book. However, still an excellent book about the power of storytelling.

Incredible Hulks #618 (Marvel)
Andy: Abomination is back and he is kicking some serious ASS!! …kind of like Greg Pak on this series.

Lady Mechanika #1 (Aspen)
Andy: READ THIS BOOK! The art, the story, the characters- all of it is solid. A new series that’s worth your time and the $2.99 cover price! A must read for Steampunk fans.

Let Me In: Crossroads #1 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Ok, it’s official: Weirdo little girls creep me the F out.

Mystery Society #5 (IDW)
NickI: Let’s hope Steve Niles has another go with these characters. It’s like a lighthearted LOEG.

New Avengers #7 (Marvel)
Andy: Ok, this is absolutely my favorite Avengers book right now! Bendis nailed the dialogue and character moments in this one. A++
Infinite Speech: One of the best issues in the series so far and it’s completely character driven!
NickI: A transitional issue, with no actual fighting; just characters interacting with each other. This is perfect Bendis. And Wolvie gets around.

Northlanders #35 (Vertigo)
NickI: Brian Wood and Becky Cloonan. That’s all I need to say.

Red Robin #18 (DC)
Andy: Hmm…with Bruce returned I’d like to have seen Tim stay in Gotham a little longer, but we’ll see where all of this is headed…
Arnab: This is consistently one of DC’s best titles. Tim is in Moscow and soon finds himself surrounded by massive weapons and a massive metahuman.

Shadowland: After the Fall #1 (Marvel)
Andy: A well done wrap-up issue to the events of Shadowland. I really, really, hope Black Panther’s time spent in Hell’s Kitchen isn’t a bust.
NickI:
Is it weird that I like the concluding parts of Shadowland over the rest of the mini-series? The less superhero, the better, I guess.

Stan Lee’s Starborn #1 (BOOM! Studios)
Andy: An interesting premise and strong artwork by Khary Randolph. The best of these new superhero books from BOOM!

Star Wars: Knight Errant #3 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Love the art, but the story is just…I don’t really care. It seems too small scale in a galaxy so large.

Superboy #2 (DC)
Andy: This issue was…surprisingly kind of boring. It’s ok though, I have complete faith in Jeff Lemire!
Arnab: Superboy gets tricked. Superboy gets a sidekick. Superboy gets studied.
NickI: I like this new sidekick – he’s a mix of Jimmy Olsen and Lex. That means he’s probably going to turn evil.

Terry Moore’s Echo #26 (Abstract Studios)
Andy: This book just keeps getting better and better. An endearing protagonist, a strong set of secondary characters, and an exciting story make Echo one of the best indies on the shelves right now.
NickI: Great interactions between the 4 characters. I love how this is a superhero comic that doesn’t feel like a superhero comic.

Thor #618 (Marvel)
Andy: I was on the fence with this new story arc, but this issue sold me. I like the idea of all these little groups allying with Asgard against a common, greater, foe.
NickI: Asgardian refugees, Balder is a bad king, Thor arrives with Kid Loki (Lokid?), and Odin returns. Can’t wait for the battle.

Thor Mighty Avengers #7 (Marvel)
NickI: Robo-beatdown! This is crazy to say, but this Thor book is my favorite. Even more than Fraction and Hickman’s Thor books.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #2 (DC)
Arnab: Fantastic issue. We’re starting to find out more about the team, specifically Lighting. And the way his power works is tragic.
NickI: Wow, fantastic second issue. If we get more issues like this, we’re in for some awesome comics.

Widowmaker #1 (Marvel)
Andy: A decent first issue; definitely give it a look if you’re a fan of these characters. Also, give writer Jim McCann’s indie book, Return of the Dapper Men a read while you’re at it!

Witchblade #140 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: A great bit of horror complete with creepy kids, monsters, and murder, all from Mohapatra and Marz!
