Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 02/21/18

Avengers #681 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Still fun but even with an origin for Voyager I’m still not seeing why she’s important to the story.
NickZ: As the Avengers finally realize what has been going on, two new players enter the fray and things are about to get a whole lot more complicated.

Astonishing X-Men #8 (Marvel)
NickZ: As Proteus toys with Psylocke and this new “Xavier”, the rest of the X-Men decide if they should trust the latter.

Batman #41 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Poison Ivy finally steps up her game and Flash gets the best cameo of the week!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Gorgeous art and colors by Janin and King, and a strong, engaging start of a new arc featuring a very powerful Poison Ivy. Helps the series after the last few issues were a little lower in quality.
NickZ: Poison Ivy is back with a major power upgrade and Bat and Cat are the only ones left to stop her.
Eric: 4/5 To hear Batman admit he has no idea how to save the world fro Poison Ivy’s mind control is both terrifying and intriguing.

Batman and the Signal #2 (DC)
Infinite Speech: It took a while but seeing Duke work through his powers and confront Batman was worth it.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. There’s still a lot of potential to Duke to be an interesting new addition to the Bat family, as a character who operates openly in the daylight. Love the inclusion of some of the “We Are Robin” team. But storywise, it’s a mess.
NickZ: A bit more enjoyable than the first issue but still not worthy of its on miniseries.

Batman Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II #4 (DC)
Infinite Speech: A team-up that does not disappoint with Splinter and Karai taking the biggest Ls of the week while Bane gives Lady Liberty a facelift.
NickZ: If you ever wondered how Raph or even Splinter would measure up against someone like Bane, then this is the issue for you!

Black Panther Annual #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Three stories from some of the greatest to ever touch the Black Panther mythos!

Bloodborne #1 (Titan)
Eric: 4/5 Bloodborne nails the feeling of dread and mysticism that is at the forefront of the game. Here’s hoping the next issue is as strong as the first.

The Brave and the Bold #1 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Fantastic, creative, detailed art is somewhat wasted on with a lackluster story that doesn’t use Wonder Woman or Batman to full potential. Read my full review on @ComicAttack: https://comicattack.net/2018/02/dc-comics-reviews-the-brave-and-the-bold-1/
NickZ: Diana and Bruce get drawn into war that maybe bigger than either of them can handle.

Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan #5 (Marvel)
NickZ: Deadpool and Logan both get their asses handed to them by a new girl that I doubt we’ve seen the last of.

Defenders #10 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: So sad this had to end but it went out in a huge way!

Descender #27 (Image)
NickZ: At long last we are learning more about the mysterious Harvesters.

Doctor Strange Damnation #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Mephisto returns and I can’t believe I’m actually enjoying him and Doctor Strange in the same comic!
NickZ: Besides the set up for this story being completely out of character for Doctor Strange, I really like some of the things set up in issue and I can’t wait to see where it goes.

Fence #4 (Boom!)
NickZ: I never thought that I could be so captivated by the drama of fencing but this series has become one of my favorite reads of the month!

Green Lanterns #41 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Baz & Cruz are (were?) my favorite Rebirth “Buddy Cop” team, but these newer story arcs aren’t showing the best of either their personal lives (which the previous creative team did so well) nor adding much to Lantern mythology.

Hit Girl #1 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Over the top violence with a twist I didn’t see coming.

Horizon #18 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Reading this was like going 80 mph then slamming into a brick wall for a sudden stop because this is the last issue of the series!

Infinity Countdown Prime #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: With the Infinity Gems is the possession of some of the most unexpected beings in the Marvel Universe, this promises to be a very interesting read. Also, who else notice that DC Comics easter egg?

Justice League #39 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Great art, and a fun page showing Batman’s different costumes through the decades (including from the Animated Series), but the major impact that should have been felt after the last issue barely causes a stir here.
NickZ: You know this book is woke when the Justice League get called out for only helping the rich white people!

Luke Cage #170 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: An adorable send off for this title that focuses on Luke’s role as a dad.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #24 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: Can’t wait for Shattered Grid to start!

Ninjak vs the Valiant Universe #2 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Valiant needs to quit playing and release the web series to this comic already. Great story so far and the Ninjak costume design adds some kick to the character.

Postal Mark #1 (Top Cow)
NickZ: This was a great follow up to the main Postal series even though I feel Mark was written a bit more robotic than he had been towards the end of Postal.
Infinite Speech: Mark is cold AF but it’s what is father deserved if you ask me!

Sex Criminals #22 (Image)
NickZ: Things don’t seem to working out to well for anyone in this book, even the Letter Daddies aren’t immune.

Summit #3 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Amy Chu has me liking Val more than anticipated and now I just want to see her save the day and blow stuff up!

Superb #7 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Hate to see the kids go out like this but they did fall for the oldest trick in the book.

Superman #41 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Really great art, and a story that has a lot of potential but it just doesn’t quite gel. It seems rushed to a conclusion and while Superman’s “I don’t care what you want!” attitude from last issue is tempered a bit, it still doesn’t quite work.
NickZ: This was a really great exploration of where the line is for Superman to intervene to help people or respect people’s rights to decided their own fate. These are the types of challenges that really make for interesting Superman stories!

Super Sons #13 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The selling point of this book is the Damian/Jon relationship, and now that the Baz/Cruz GL book isn’t giving me that, I was happy to come here for my second-favorite “Buddy Cop” team-up. Sadly, there are only 3 more issues.
NickZ: After meeting Talia, Jon finally gets a glimpse into the darkness that birthed Damian Wayne.

Trinity #18 (DC)
NickZ: Having this story narrated by all three of the trinity is very entertaining! I liked how they all gained a new respect for each other by watching how each deals with their new handicap.

Venom #162 (Marvel)
NickZ: Even I have to admit that the symbiote X-Men are pretty awesome!

X-Men Gold #22 (Marvel)
NickZ: Kitty’s leadership has failed this team so many times in battle and now she has gotten them arrested!
