Chirpin’ Wednesday Reviews 09/26/18

Action Comics #1003 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The scene with Robinson Goode and Batmam raised this score significantly. The Daily Planet cast overall is good, but there are just so many holes. What happened with Clark and Lois after last issue? Why didn’t Goode realize why Clark was sick?

The Amazing Spider-Man #6 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
I’ve never had this much fun reading a story focused on Boomerang but that cliffhanger was even better
NickZ
: Boomerang taking Peter to The Bar With No Name on Spider-Man trivia night was priceless! Also, I am living for the Superior Foes reunion!

Batman: Kings of Fear #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The almost retro-style art is the main attraction, but there’s a good story underneath that could be great with a few tweaks. The main problem is that, so far, after 2 issues, we know Batman has been affected by Fear Gas, but nothing else.

Black Panther #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This intergalactic Black Panther story is one of the best in a long time!

Detective Comics #989 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The best part of this issue is the discussion between the two Fireflies and their insight into why they continue to fight Batman, even when they are D-list villains. If more of the issue carried these kinds of moments, it would be great.

Domino Annual #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: A collection of great stories in an Annual worth adding to the read pile.

Doomsday Clock #7 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Why the hell did I buy this? It’s still not going anywhere and if it is I don’t care anymore.
NickZ: Dr. Manhattan finally appears but is it too little too late to save this miniseries? I mean, he reveals some interesting things but after being so long and drawn out does anyone still care?

Executive Assistant #5 (Aspen)
Infinite Speech: Northcott gave Iris a new direction and made it work so well!

Extermination #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Jean made the right decision going with X-Force but what does that surprise character who popped up has to do with all of this??
NickZ: This story is still very exciting even if some of the X-Men are being written very out of character.

Faith: Dreamside #1 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Another great Faith story to kick off Valiant Beyond!

Flash #55 (DC)
Infinite Speech: These new forces targeting the Rogues seems a little too convenient.
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’m glad to be, hopefully, moving away from the Strength and Sages Forces, and getting back to a regular, good old-fashioned Flash story. However, I’m still not liking Barry’s characterization. His relationship with Iris has nothing behind it.

Harbinger Wars 2: Aftermath #1 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Started off interesting but then fizzled out.

Heroes in Crisis #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: A lot of characters died but the way death has been handled in comics it fell flat.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Too many people compare this to Identity Crisis instead of letting it stand on its own. It has a very compelling premise, but the execution in this issue isn’t quite right. But, King has a good track record, so I’m willing to see where it goes.
NickZ: I hate to rush to judgement on a new series but either I am missing something or this is the worst thing I’ve ever read by Tom King. I will say that Clay Mann’s art is fantastic tho!

Infinity Wars Iron Hammer #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Not as good as the Cap/Dr. Strange mash-up, but it was a fun read none the less.

Justice League Dark #3 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Wonder Woman got a magical upgrade and her role with all of these magical characters seems to fit more.
Martin: 4/5 stars. The Upside Down man is a genuinely creepy and horrific character that seems like he’d fit right into a straight-up mature-reader horror book versus a Justice League book. Wonder Woman’s presence on the team is given some helpful context.

Justice League Odyssey #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Sejic gave Darkseid a smooth redesign and want to know more about these Old Gods we already knew!
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’m cautiously optimistic on this one, given all of the trouble there was in getting this issue published. The team intrigues me, especially Jessica Cruz, Starfire, and Darkseid. I’m not quite sure why Azrael is on the team.
NickZ: Not how I expected this team to come together but I am definitely on board to see where they are going!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #31 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: Everyone should be reading this series and this new lineup is fantastic!

Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #310 (Marvel)
NickZ: A perfect example of how amazing Chip Zdarsky’s run on this book has been! He is so great at making stories about Spidey be fun, and hilarious, while at the same time have such heart that it gets you right in the feels!

Scarlet #2 (JinxWorld)
Infinite Speech: Scarlet isn’t here for the games and I love Maleeve’s use of colors in this one.

Sci-Fu TPB (Oni Press)
Infinite Speech: If you’re reading this go and pick up Sci-Fu because Yehudi Mercado is on fire with this one!

Silencer #9 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This is the only New Age of Heroes title you should be reading. Seriously.

The Terrifics #8 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Quickly becoming 1 of my fave DC books. I loved the Silver Age vibe of the world Plastic Man & Pneuman find, & the future Aztec world Rex & Phantom Girl visit had a “Black Science Vibe” to it. The Tom Strong & Holt scene was appropriately emotional.

Wayward #29 (Image)
Infinite Speech: That last page!! I need to own that page! This series is almost over and it’s definitely one I’m going to miss.

The Wicked + The Divine 1373 AD #1 (Image)
NickZ: This brings a whole new dynamic to the charater of Lucifer. They could literally make a series out of each of these one-off issue focusing on a different previous pantheon.

X-Men Blue #36 (Marvel)
NickZ: I love that after all they have been through, the X-Men always comes back to Scott and Jean. Beast said it best, “…No one’s ever going to get between those two for long.”

X-Men Red #8 (Marvel)
NickZ: This is the X-Men at their best! Working together, using other people’s hate to give them strength, and kicking the ass of all those who underestimated them!
