Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 10/19/16

Adventure Time Comics #4 (Boom!)
NickZ: Some really fun stories in this issue and one is even by Jim Zub!

A-Force #10 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This is a series I’m going to miss because it’s been fantastic since issue 1! The last page of this one really kicks you in the feels too.

Amazing Spider-Man #20 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Doctor Ock’s return is validated right here and it’s pretty damn good.

All-New X-Men #14 (Marvel)
Arnab: Are these yahoos a team or not?
NickZ: A very cute Cyclops story, I guess.

Aquaman #9 (DC)
Infinite Speech: This is the Aquaman series I’ve waited years to enjoy.

Astro City #40 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Another fantastic issue that covers the life of an “ordinary” person whose life is touched by a superhero.

1733a28f-90a3-4da7-b2ca-3dca555f49f2Batman #9 (DC)
Arnab: Hold up. Catwoman is in jail for killing how many people? When did this happen?
Infinite Speech: Batman assembles his own Suicide Squad? Now I’m interested.
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Start of a new arc & this 1 looks great, both story-&-art-wise. The scenes of Batman recruiting a new team are great
NickZ: I had my doubts about this Suicide Squad story but it is really good so far. My only question is when did Selina get locked up?

The Beauty #11 (Image)
NickZ: Revenge has never looked this good or tasted this sweet.

Black Panther #7 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: There’s a lot of action here but it’s not great action.

Captain America: Sam Wilson #14 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Going to need Sam to beat the crap out of Hydra Cap soon.

Cyborg #3 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Not understanding the retreading of what David Walker JUST DID!! Skip this one.
Martin: 3/5 stars. The story of “does Vic have a soul?” seems to be dragging and it’s only issue #3. Let’s hope it gets wrapped up soon.

Dark Knight III: The Master Race #6 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. At this point, I honestly don’t know much what’s going on, & I’m rapidly losing interest.

Deadpool Back In Black #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: Spider-Venom-Pool, Power Kids, and a drunk clown stop an alien invasion! No, really!

Deadpool Too Soon? #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Possibly the most ridiculous Deadpool story I’ve ever read, but it has some good jokes and great art by Todd Nauck.

Death of X #2 (Marvel)death-of-x-2
Arnab: This whole Emma/Scott secret better be a fucking doozy if they’re gonna make him act a fool.
Infinite Speech: Can’t believe I’m defending Cyclops but Marvel seems to be forcing him to be the bad guy here.
NickZ: Cyclops would never do or say the things they are having him do in this series. It’s lazy storytelling and disgraceful towards the X-Men’s legacy.

Doctor Strange #13 (Marvel)
NickZ: It’s great seeing Strange have to be more clever in defeating his enemies with his limited powers.

Faith #4 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Want to have some fun? Read Faith because Jody Houser brings out the true heart of a hero in this series!

Green Arrow #9 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Yet another “Ollie is stuck on an island” story, but actually works. The character relationships & art sell it.

Green Lanterns #9 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. 1-off story about a man who REALLY wants to be chosen as a Green Lantern. Creepy art adds to the story.

Horizon #4 (Image)
Infinite Speech: This series keeps delivering great action and characters with every issue! I’m riding with Horizon until the wheels fall off!

Infamous Iron Man #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Not a great intro but the question of what drives Doom is a pretty important one.
NickZ: I am very intrigued by this book and was a bit surprised by the Civil War spoilers.

jem-20Jem & the Holograms #20 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Is it cheating if your hologram persona is going on the date? This can’t end well at all for Jerrica.

Joyride #6 (Boom!)
NickZ: Another intriguing issue. I love these characters. Their fantastic adventures kinda remind me of Voltron.

Justice League #7 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Interesting character study, pairing off League members & delving into what they don’t like about each other.
NickZ: That’s an interesting way to end a story. It reminded me of the end of the Buffy musical episode.

Mockingbird #8 (Marvel)
Martin: 5/5 stars. My comic of the week. So many fun, clever, inside jokes and Easter eggs with fantastic art & a smart sensibility.

Mighty Thor #12 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Mjolnir gets an origin story and it’s GREAT! Frazier Irving needs to be on a monthly title again too.

Nightwing #7 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Raptor continues to evolve into a really interesting character, & the Bat Family cameos make this a stand-out issue.
Arnab: My bet is on uncle. Or creepy admirer from afar. But uncle sounds better.
NickZ: Okay, it took 7 whole issues but I am finally interested in this book.

Night’s Dominion #2 (Oni Press)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Perfect read for fantasy lovers. Magus, Assassin, Thief, Bard & Acolyte meet in a tavern. It’s D&D as comic!

Ninjak #20 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Ninjak makes every team up pure gold!

Raven #2 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Good look into Raven, & a good mix of comedy, mystery, & teen angst. Some transitions between scenes are confusing.

Superman #9 (DC)superman-9
Martin: 4/5 stars. My favorite Superman book right now – knows how to have fun with a homage to both Darwyn Cooke & the Silver Age.
NickZ: This is officially my favorite run on a Superman book… ever! Jon’s expressions in every panel are priceless!

Symmetry #8 (Top Cow)
NickZ: This was a very good, thought provoking series. I hope some of you read it so we get another arc.
Infinite Speech: Symmetry keeps elevating what comic book storytelling can be!

Thomas Alsop Vol 2 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: There’s a visceral realness in this supernatural story that makes New York City as much a character as it’s inhabitants. READ THIS SERIES FOLKS!

Trinity #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Perfect timing w/ a lovely depiction of Smallville in Autumn, but should focus on all 3 characters, not just Superman.
NickZ: This literally had me in tears. Francis Manapul spoke to fathers and sons everywhere as he gave tribute to his own.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #13 (Marvel)
NickZ: Doreen, Ant-Man, and the entire squirrel fam having a very fun, very odd Canadian adventure in true SG fashion!

Uncanny Inhumans #14 (Marvel)
NickZ: The most anti-climatic ending ever! What a waste of a story.

X-Men’92 #8 (Marvel)
NickZ: This is currently the only good X-Men book, period!

A Year of Marvels The Unbeatable #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: There was the cutest team-up between Rocket Raccoon and Squirrel Girl’s sidekick, Tippy-Toe and a pretty badass Nick Fury story too!
