Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 10/17/18

Aquaman #41 (DC)
NickZ: Mera does her best to balance her duties as queen of Atlantis and her commitment to the Justice League but it doesn’t seem to be enough.

Aphrodite V #4 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech:
If you’re not reading this then you’re missing out on some great storytelling from Hill and Spokes!

Astonishing X-Men #16 (Marvel)
NickZ: Alex’s brilliant idea to team-up with the Reavers goes about a well as you’d expect.

Batman #57 (DC)
Infinite Speech: I don’t know what was creepier the fable told with the action or that ending! Either way Batman is pissed and KG Beast deserves what he gets!
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. A difficult issue to rate. The artwork & action scenes are fantastic, as are the illustrations of the Fairy Tale by artist Mark Buckingham. But the idea that Batman would go through the effort to find KGBeast just to beat him up & not get info was stupid.
NickZ: You know you’ve really pissed Batman off when he makes a habit of bending his no killing rule to leave you for dead on more than one occasion.

Cover #2 (JinxWorld)
Infinite Speech: David Mack and Brian Bendis are on fire with this one!

Darth Vader #22 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I haven’t been this excited about Vader since I was a kid!

Green Lanterns #57 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. This book looks great, but it’s an unfortunate send-off for the 2 characters for whom the book was created (Simon & Jessica). The Hal Jordan & Cyborg Superman story is fine – nothing special, but fine. But that’s not why I was reading this book.

Infinity Wars Weapon Hex #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: A pretty interesting twist on X-23 and the Scarlet Witches origin.

Justice League #10 (DC)
Infinite Speech: We meet more members of the League right before things go south in one of the best series from DC right now!
Martin: 4/5 stars. A prelude to the “Drowned” cross-over, with lots of crazy Snyder-style new characters and universe-spanning plots and twists. I liked the inclusion of Firestorm & Adam Strange in the League.
NickZ: Francis Manapul’s art and colors on this issue are incredible and I really like the dynamic Snyder has been setting up with Diana and Arthur.

Justice League Dark #4 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Stunning visuals and some really unexpected things happening. I particularly liked the arrival of Black Orchid, a former member of the New 52 JL Dark, being witch-marked by Hecate and trying to destroy The Green. It was a genuine surprise.
NickZ: The Witching Hour is crazy and fantastic! I really didn’t expect to like it THIS much!

Mr & Mrs X #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: Rogue, Gambit, the Shi’ar Imperial Guard, and the Star Jammers! Yes, more of this, please!

Lucifer #1 (Vertigo)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Great visuals and stunning coloring work help tell an intriguing three-part story featuring Lucifer as well as a new character, a human detective who is, for now, more interesting. Read my review here!

New Challengers #6 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. I really wanted to like this series, as I have a fondness for the old Challs. This new series just wasn’t given enough chance to breathe and become its own thing. This premature ending is confusing and feels extremely rushed.

Nightwing #51 (DC)
NickZ: Get out of here with this Ric Grayson business and who didn’t see that person taking up the mantel of Nightwing?

Old Man Logan #49 (Marvel)
NickZ: What do you do with two alternate, older version of heroes that have just recently been resurrected? Have them fight each other to the death of course, problem solved.

Pearl #3 (JinxWorld)
Infinite Speech: Another Bendis title that you should be picking up but you’ll love that Gaydos artwork in every panel!

Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #311 (Marvel)
NickZ:
Morlun really kicks the s*** out of Peter for this entire issue! I glad that they haven’t backed away from the dynamic of Jameson helping Spider-Man.

Shuri #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I was unprepared for how great this book was going to be! The entire creative team was on fire and had me hooked with every page and now I want to know what Shuri’s answer is!

Teen Titans #23 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Not feeling this as much as I was before. Not sure if I’m sticking around much longer.
Martin: 2/5 stars. The nicest thing I can say is that I liked the art for this a lot. It’s too bad the plot and characterization are a complete mess. Djinn is probably the most interesting so far, so it helps that she’s the POV character of this issue.
NickZ: This iteration of the Teen Titans really sucks. They couldn’t stop one villain and then when they finally did catch up to her it was already too late.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #87 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: A great issue made even better when a friend of mine gets a cameo!

Thor #6 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: An OP Doom makes for one of the best villains ever! Now can next issue hurry up!

Venom Annual #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: This almost had the feel of the “Almost Got ‘Im” episode of Batman the Animated Series, only with Venom instead of Batman.

X-Men Black Mystique #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Wasn’t really feeling the Mystique story but I’m fully on board for whatever is going on with Apocalypse!
