Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 09/18/19

Absolute Carnage #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I had my doubts about this series but it’s been worth it since the first issue and the cliffhanger here is absolutely crazy!

Archie Vs Predator II #2 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: So glad that Alex de Campi brought us back to the crossover I never knew I wanted!

Batman #78 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Batman and Catwoman reconnecting before they back to save Gotham is some solid character building and King makes them feel like a real couple!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Lots & lots of King dialogue in this, but it’s all well-done banter between Bruce and Selina. The timing of the past 2 issues has been confusing, but this makes it clear it happens before #79. Great art by Mann & Morey, & a fun homage to Batman: Year One.

Black Panther & the Agents of Wakanda #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This issue is bananas and it looks like me and Fat Cobra said the exact same thing when we saw that person on the last page.

Excellence #5 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Okay, now I’m fully about taking the Aegis down after the hint they did something to GG and Monique’s character design is fire!

Flash Forward #1 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. First Wally goes nuts, accidentally kills a bunch of his friends, and then tries to cover it up. Now he’s in a regular prison with a power-dampening collar, and the constant target of attacks by villains he put there. Yeah, totally makes sense…

House of X #5 (Marvel)
Arnab: I mean, Xavier might think he knows everything, but this is not going to end well.
Infinite Speech: Hickman is tying things together and we find out what Goldballs has been up to! I might be the only one who wanted to know that last part though.

Inferior Five #1 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. A really different & intriguing idea, with art by legend Keith Giffen, & a script by “new” legend Jeff Lemire. It seems apart from standard DC Continuity, which actually gives it room to tell the story it wants. I can’t wait to see where it’s going.

Justice League #32 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Snyder and Tynion haven’t been too kind to the Justice League but it looks like they might have a chance.

Killers #3 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: I already want more of this after the mini-series wraps up!

Once and Future #2 (Boom! Studios)
Martin: 5/5 stars. The clever twists applied to this modern King Arthur story are so unexpected, Gillen’s story alone is a delight to read. But, coupled with the magnificent art by Mora and Bonvillain, it’s a masterpiece. My comic of the week.

Spider-Man #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Wasn’t going to get this one but so glad I changed my mind and took this emotional trip with Spidey. Definitely getting the second issue and you can check out my full review here!

Supergirl #34 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. This issue tries to accomplish a lot, returning Supergirl to National City after her long absence, reminding us of characters we haven’t seen for a while, involving Leviathan, & including the requisite Year of the Villain tie-in. It’s a bit frenetic.

Superman #15 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Loved the art, especially the pages with the new Legion of Super Heroes character designs. Their teen dialogue is also pretty fun. The best parts, to me, were the wrap-ups to Jor-El’s & Zod’s arcs. Hopefully this means we won’t see crazy Jor-El again.

Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #3 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. I applaud the idea behind this, and think there’s a place for a book like this. But, to me, the unconventional story-telling, short, choppy 2-3 page “chapters” that don’t follow a linear timeline, make it confusing to follow.

Transformers #12 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Road Rage has become one of my new favorites and he better be okay!

Weather Man #4 (Image)
Infinite Speech: LeHeup, Fox, and Dinisio dropped one hell of a cliffhanger on us and now I’m questioning that one particular panel.

Wonder Woman: Come Back To Me #3 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’ve been enjoying this stand-alone WW story, originally created for Walmart distribution. Diana and Steve have a great relationship, and including Jonah Hex & other characters, and the mysterious island make a compelling story.

Xena: Warrior Princess #6 (Dynamite)
Infinite Speech: I now know that a group of Harpies is called a “Clamor” and this ended up being my favorite issue!
