Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 07/18/18

Adventure Time Comics #25 (Boom!)
NickZ: I know Adventure Time is edgy, but implying that Princess Bubble Gum stole semen from Finn is a bit much!

Aphrodite V #1 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: I’m constantly praising Bryan Hill’s work and this new series is no different! If you’re not already reading this then you’ll need to start!
Eric: This cyber modern noir take on Aphrodite is pretty cool visually. But there isn’t much character development in issue 1.

Black [AF]: Widows and Orphans #2 (Black Mask)
Infinite Speech: That was a long wait between issues but it was worth it!

Batman #51 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The big “wedding aftermath” issue shows an emotionally damaged Bruce Wayne trying to deal with his feelings. The plot device, that Bruce has been called to jury duty to evaluate a case involving Batman & Mr. Freeze is a bit contrived, but so far, it works.
NickZ: Whatever your current feelings are about Tom King and his Batman story, you gotta admit, the man knows how to subvert expectations and take you somewhere you didn’t expect to go.
Eric: King is treading new ground by forcing Bruce Wayne to reverse the mistakes of Batman. This could be interesting…

Batwoman #17 (DC)
NickZ: Kate is trying to adjust to recent life changing events from this comic, Detective Comics, and Batman, so who better to do it with than an old flame?

The Brave and the Bold #6 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I’ve loved Sharp’s art on this series, and the story did get better for a while, but the conclusion is a jumble of motivations, characters, and action sequences that’s quite difficult to follow. Batman & Wonder Woman seem like afterthoughts.
NickZ: This mini-series wasn’t that great and the thought that it is to be continued is not appealing at all.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer The Reckoning #2 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: How do you defeat an enemy who gains your memories as you make them?

Cable #159 (Marvel)
NickZ: Any time we revisit Cable’s time with Redd and Slym is a plus in my book.

East of West #38 (Image)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Dragotta’s fantastic art, especially his characters, continue to be a highlight of this series. The Apocalypse is looming, and the death of a major character (and how the character was set up) make this series feel like every issue is important.

Green Lanterns #51 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I am really bummed that this series seems to be turning into a standard GL Corps book instead of a book focusing on Simon & Jessica, but that said, I am intrigued by the mystery being set up, & how Jess’ ring is warning her not to trust anybody.

Hunt For Wolverine The Claws of a Killer #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: When Daken is the character in the story you most empathize with, you know you’re in trouble.

Infinity Countdown #5 (Marvel)
NickZ: It seems as though the Infinity Stones are finally in the hands of the people who are meant to protect them from whatever threat is coming in the Infinity War.

Justice League #4 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. There is so much happening in this issue in terms of the Legion of Doom taking down the JL, but it’s a slower moment toward the beginning of the issue, about Gorilla Grodd’s origin, that was particularly well-done.
NickZ: This book is titled Justice League but I think Scott Snyder is secretly siding with the Legion of Doom.

Star Trek TNG Terra Incognita #1 (IDW)
NickZ: Excited for the third chapter in what has been an incredible Next Generation story but I am a little disappointed that they don’t have J.K. Woodward on art this time around. (Besides variant covers)

Magic Order #2 (Image)
Infinite Speech: It was suggested I pick this up and I must say that I’m officially hooked!
Eric: A drowning in a taxi sitting in the middle of NY traffic…whoa! This ain’t stage magic Millar is playing with.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #29 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: That last page though!!!!

New Challengers #3 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Nice to get some background on one of the new Challengers (Krunch) but the main story is a bit confusing and the number of characters make it difficult to get of a sense of whom to focus on. I am excited abou the return of Skartaris, though.

Ninjak #9 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: This doesn’t seem like the Livewire in Harbinger Wars II but this was still one great team-up!

Shadowman #5 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Taking us back to see how this all started in one hell of a story!

Skyward #4 (Image)
Infinite Speech: This issue had more or Willa’s dad who stole the show! Can’t wait to see what the creative team has in store next issue because that storm looks serious!
Eric: Henderson FINALLY focuses on the most interesting character in the book. Now…he’s just gotta survive the issue

Weatherman #2 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Why did they have to traumatize me with the dog all over again?! The twist is great and the story execution is pure fire!
Eric: Nathan Bright is the most wanted man in the galaxy. But can his psyche handle the reason why? READ THIS BOOK!!!

X-Men Gold #32 (Marvel)
NickZ: I find it fascinating that young Cyclops who barely really knows Rachel at all was able to reach her when friends and lovers who have know her forever couldn’t. Blood really is thicker than water or Scott Summers (at any age) is just THAT awesome!

X-Men Red #6 (Marvel)
NickZ: Jean builds an even more powerful “searebro” and using her now unrestrained powers easily discovers the true enemy they have been fighting this entire time!
