Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 07/11/18

Accell #12 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: A cool new villain is introduced but Daniel getting yelled at by his Abuela was the icing on the cake for me!

Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Peter’s spider sense should warn him when his life is about fall apart because it crumbles magnificently in this issue with an incredible 2nd story introducing a new villain!
NickZ: This is everything you could want in a Spider-Man book! Spencer has tapped back into the humor and heart that made Superior Foes of Spider-Man so fantastic, while Ottley is using his artistic mastery he honed on Invincible and just running wild though the Marvel Universe!

Astonisher #9 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech: Magnus has got to be one of the worst characters in comics but Alex De Campi keeps this guy surrounded by great people and one hell of a story that keeps you on your toes!

Black Science #37 (Image)
NickZ: Say what you will about Grant and Sara McKay but when you are willing to risk destroying the entire multiverse in order to reunite with you children, that’s some pretty badass parenting!

Champions #22 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This issue was just an emotional roller coaster that I thought couldn’t get any better then one of my favorite Marvel monsters shows up!
NickZ: As the Champions reconnect and make peace with their new personal developments, it seems they have a more pressing thing to deal with, specifically a Man-Thing!

Coda #3 (Boom! Studios)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The world-building in this crazy mash-up of a post-apocalyptic, post-magic fantasy continues, with colorful, chaotic art and a surprising cliffhanger ending.

Darth Vader #18 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: If ANYONE needs to know how much of a badass Darth Vader is just give them this issue!! HOLY Force Choke!! Oh, and I need a series based on Tarkin’s younger years based on what he mentions here!

Detective Comics #984 (DC)
Infinite Speech: The Hill Administration is over here bringing many of my favorite characters together and then drops some of the best dialogue gems in this week’s comics!
Martin: 4/5 stars. I can’t say I’m thrilled about Karma as a villain (yet another guy who knows Bruce Wayne is Batman and of course is a more skilled combatant than ANY of the Bat-family), but I like the repercussions he is having on the characters and the story.
NickZ: You better believe Bryan Hill is writing some damn good Batman! Also, Mendonca is killing it on pencils! Black Lightning is an interesting addition to the Bat-Family.

Die! Die! Die! #1 (Image)
Infinite Speech: This opening action sequence was insane and it looks like I’ve got another new title to check out!

Domino #4 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This series is long overdue!

Farmhand #1 (Image)
Infinite Speech: So glad Rob Guillory is back and making the unexpected creepy, fun, and worth your time and money!
NickZ: An absolute delight to have new Rob Guillory art in my hands every month once again! And this story is so off the wall crazy and imaginative! I literally have no idea where it is going but i’m excited to keep reading and find out!

Flash #50 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Two great cliffhangers in this issue and I’m seriously hoping the mystery character turns out to be who I think it is!
Martin: 4/5 stars. The end of the “Flash War.” There are some very significant things that happen that really do seem like they will impact all of DC Comics for some time, including the return of an old character & an aspect of the Speed Force that is no longer available.

Hawkman #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I am not a huge Hawkman fan, and I was planning to drop this title after this issue. However, the great action-oriented art along with the intriguing story about Hawkman’s history and the last few pages of this issue caused me to reconsider my decision.

Immortal Men #4 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. A premise with so much promise, but so far Immortal Men has under-delivered. Lots of characters introduced, but so far, almost no detail on them. When “important events” happen to main characters, we don’t care because we don’t really KNOW them.

Infinity Countdown Darkhawk #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: This was a great miniseries for both Darkhawk and Nova fans and that ending was such a great tease! The 90’s are officially back, y’all!

Isola #4 (Image)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. A spectacular issue with beautiful Miyazaki-inspired art. This issue finally answers the question of how Queen Olwyn was turned into a tiger, and provides more hints into her relationship with Rook. It’s also full of action & mysticism. My comic of the week

The New Mutants Dead Souls #5 (Marvel)
NickZ: Things get pretty crazy when the gang does a little B&E at Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum!

Oblivion Song #5 (Image)
NickZ: The reunion we’ve waited…5 issue for is finally here! Plus we get a new perspective on the Oblivion dimension.

Old Man Logan #43 (Marvel)
NickZ: Bullseye and Logan are in the deadliest game of cat and mouse ever and this Vendetta chick isn’t making things any better!

Plastic Man #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. So much to love in this, including a really fun “find these items in the picture!” page had me laughing out loud. But in addition to the humor, there’s a real depth to Plastic Man’s character in his search for a young kid & how he knows he’s not a hero.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #24 (DC)
NickZ: Holy s***! Jason may have just crossed a line that he cannot come back from! No Bat-fan can miss the next issue!

Suicide Squad #44 (DC)
NickZ: A really great team-up between Batman and Deadshot! It really demonstrates how alike these two really are and at the same time, how fundamentally different!

Superman #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: So those Man of Steel comics could have been the beginning of this series? Oh well, this was still pretty decent and I’m willing to stick around for the first arc to see how this plays out.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. I really want to like Bendis’ new Superman, and given his usual way of taking a while to build his stories, I’ll give it a chance, but so far, the characterization of the supporting cast, especially J’onn J’onnz in this issue, is way off the mark.
NickZ: Ugh, this was pretty awful! I legit thought some villain was pretending to be Martian Manhunter. Also, Bendis already bringing back the villain they just defeated in Man of Steel is lazy. No bueno.

Titans #23 (DC)
Martin: 2/5 stars. Nothing about this reads like a fun Titans book. The characterization is all widely off. The violence is over the top. Nightwing constantly arguing with Miss Martian is annoying, especially since MM acts nothing like the character we all know. Disappointing.
NickZ: Dick’s new team of Titans is off to a great start! (If in fighting and letting people get murdered is considered great)

Transformers: Unicron #1 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: After millions of years the end is near and Shockwave might see his plans play out! You have to read this if you call yourself a Transformers fan!

Wildstorm: Michael Cray #9 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Hill and Stevens have delivered a twisted version of the DCU that is not to be slept on!

Wonder Woman #50 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. For those who don’t like Jason (me included), you should like some things that happen in this issue. However, the generic, non-threatening portrayal of the Dark Gods, who aren’t scary in the slightest, bring the score down.

X-Men Blue #31 (Marvel)
NickZ: I think I’m with Briar on this one, the X-Men should let Magneto and Emma have it out and then just deal with the aftermath.

X-23 #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: A great new start for Laura and Gabby! I’m still confused as to why she isn’t Wolverine anymore but I’ll go with it. The Stepford Cuckoos have never been more creepy!
