Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 04/05/17

Adventure Time #63 (Boom!)
NickZ: I haven’t seen a competition this fierce since the ’94 Figure Skating Championship!

All-New Wolverine #19 (Marvel)
NickZ: Functionally, the new costume makes sense, but stylistically, why go back to the darker X-Force colors?

America #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Once Moon Girl came on the scene the book definitely picked up and became more fun.

Baltimore: The Red Kingdom #3 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: This issue was a tipping point and now I have to impatiently wait for the next issue because of a tense cliffhanger!

Batman #20 (DC)
Arnab: Hot damn. That’s what you call an ending. “I am Bane” is sort of like the sequel to Knightfall that you didn’t know you wanted.
Infinite Speech: WOW! Gotta say that was a great ending to an arc I didn’t have too much faith in at the beginning! Makes me want more Bane down the line.
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. A strong finish to the “I Am Bane” story-arc. The art & colors are perfect, with great, detailed figures.
NickZ: Another incredibly powerful Batman story, masterfully delivered to us by King and Finch!

Captain America: Steve Rogers #19 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I guess that “death” was supposed to be impactful but it wasn’t. The Big 2 milked the impact of death in comics dry a long time ago.

Champions #7 (Marvel)
Arnab: Don’t you just love it when adults go terrorizing children? It’s like the real world, but in comics.
NickZ: The kids are getting too caught up in their social media image vs what their movement was originally about.
Infinite Speech: Such a great team but now the stories are dripping with weaksauce.

The Fall and Rise of Captain Atom #4 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. The series has been interesting, but the story is a bit less interesting this particular issue.

Green Arrow #20 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Good art helps lift this score, but as I mentioned w/ #19, the Arsenal arc didn’t work for me. Glad it’s over.

Green Lanterns #20 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Dr. Polaris isn’t working for me as a villain. His tragic backstory seems too forced. Art is really good.

Hawkeye #5 (Marvel)
NickZ: Kate Bishop and Jessica Jones, two great tastes that taste great together.
Infinite Speech: These two should team up at least twice a year!

Iron Fist #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: MUCH better than the first issue and with the plot fleshed out I it looks like I’ll stick around for a bit longer.

Jem and the Holograms #25 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Rio knows the truth and dude is pissed! Another great Jem issue from Thompson that excels expectations

Justice League #18 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Pasarin’s art is really spectacular, with great action scenes. Unfortunately the story is quite lackluster.
NickZ: Whenever they try to make the Justice League stories too grandiose, it always falls flat.
Infinite Speech: At least it looks pretty, right?

Nightwing #18 (DC)
Arnab: It’s like a walk through memory lane. Except it’s more of a sprint through nightmares of the past lane.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. It’s been great seeing Dick & Damian pair up again but there are so many “behind the scenes” villains this arc
NickZ: It’s a return to Dick and Damian’s early adventures, just a little more dark than I remember.

Over the Garden Wall #12 (Boom!)
NickZ: Greg and Wirt are finally reunited, just in time to fight about Hero Frog/ Pirate Croaker.

Paper Girls #13 (Image)
NickZ: This has to be one of the best time travel stories ever! I mean, that vision alone was insane!

Royals #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Marvel Boy from another universe has an offer that’s too good to be true but I’m on board for this direction!.

Sons of the Devil #11 (Image)
NickZ: Sons of the Devil is back and more dark and creepy than ever!
Infinite Speech: I missed this series and glad it’s back with more horror goodness!

Spider-Man #15 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Szymon Kudranski’s art brings a new level of weight to this story but I still fail to see what Fabio’s role is in this series.

Spider-Man Deadpool #16 (Marvel)
Arnab: I’m not particularly digging this arc.
NickZ: Dracula and a Van Helsing descendant have the most epic/unconventional battle ever!

Superman #20 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I’m liking the “Rebirth” Superman, as it seems closer to his classic roots. The New 52 merge is confusing, though.
NickZ: When Batman shows up in your barn to tell you that something is amiss, believe him!

The Uncanny Avengers #22 (Marvel)
NickZ: This was a good conclusion to the Red Skull thing up until they had that WTF ending.
Infinite Speech: This is still a better X-Men book than the actual X-Men titles.

The Walking Dead #166 (Image)
Arnab: So are we officially getting a cure? Because that better be how this fucking Andrea plot ends.
NickZ: Can Rick Grimes catch a f***ing break for once in his life?

The Woods #31 (Boom!)
NickZ: Things are getting even weirder! All points seem to be coalescing into one epic climax!

X-Men Gold #1 (Marvel)
Arnab: It feels like we’re back in Xavier days and I hate it. Kitty saying it’s their job to rebuild a trust that didn’t even exist to begin with is nonsense.
Infinite Speech: This seems like a return to what made the X-Men great despite certain issues with the art that go beyond the controversy.
NickZ: What an unprofessional and disgraceful situation and in an X-Men book of all places!
