Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 04/24/19

Action Comics #1010 (DC)
Martin:
3.5/5 stars. This was a great spy story full of tension, action, excitement, and mystery. It wasn’t a Superman story by any means, but still a great spy story. I’m starting to think Bendis is on the wrong book(s).

Amazing Spider-Man #20 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Okay, the twist is revealed and my faith in Spencer is restored!

Avengers #18 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The Squadron Supreme of America enters this War of the Realms tie-in and Jason Aaron makes sure to keep things weird w/ the big bad reveal at the end.

Black Panther #11 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech
: Bast is here and she’s not too happy but this interstellar adventure sure has me excited to see where Coates brings T’Challa when it’s over!

Books of Magic #7 (Vertigo)
Martin:
3.5/5 stars. The start of a new arc has some art changes & a change in tone. Tim continues to be an interesting character, in that he acts like a real kid would act in his situation. He doesn’t have all the answers. However, neither does his “protector,” Rose.

Coda #11 (Boom! Studios)
Martin:
4/5 stars. The second to last issue of the series slows things down, but shows just how clever Sir Hum can (try to) be. The art, characters, and overall concept of this post-magic apocalyptic series continue to be some of the most creative in comics.

Detective Comics #1002 (DC)
Martin:
3/5 stars. I’m getting a little tired of Batman fighting Wrath. I mean Grim Knight. I mean the Batmen from the Dark Multiverse. No, wait, I mean Arkham Knight. I get them confused because they are ALL THE SAME IDEA. Thanks. Let’s move on to something new.

Dial H for Hero #2 (DC)
Martin:
4.5/5 stars. The fun of the Dial H books comes from the wacky heroes that the creative team have to invent each issue, but Humphries adds to that a compassionate & realistic depiction of teen runaways, and Quinones makes everything visually stunning.

Flash #69 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
I just want this to be over. Trickster is my least favorite Rogue.
Martin: 3/5 stars. Flash mentions that happiness has to be earned, not given, and I would love for that to be an indication that he is going to return to the happy & hopeful Barry Allen that he should be, but the darkness of this Trickster arc has been disappointing.

Freedom Fighters #5 (DC)
Martin:
3.5/5 stars. Eddy Barrows’ art is so good. The action scenes are superb, & the flashback scenes as Uncle Sam narrates about the “spirit of ’76” look really good. My problem is I just don’t care about any of the characters so far, & we’re about halfway thru.

Heroes in Crisis #8 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
A lot of people are mad about the big reveal here but your fav did that.
Martin: 1/5 stars. Um, Mitch Gerads art is good. O, we’re done with the positives for this issue. What a complete waste of a fan-favorite character who was literally the “soul” of the return to a more fun and happy Rebirth era, which sadly DC execs just don’t get.

Ironheart #5 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
This series has hooked me and Ewing, Vecchio, & Milla are one of my new favorite creative teams.

Justice League: Dark #10 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
That was one hell of an ultimatum on the last page! Looks like the list of magic users will get smaller by next issue.
Martin: 4/5 stars. While this story has ties to the main Justice League story and the destruction of the Source Wall, I find it to be more engaging with more compelling characters. Nabu explains his plan, and it actually sounds almost reasonable, if extreme.

Silencer #16 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
Honor couldn’t keep that secret for long but I’m Abnett isn’t going to make this easy for our heroine!

Star Wars: Darth Vader – Visions #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
The great art couldn’t save this trash story. Marvel could have kept this in the drafts.

Superb #19 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech:
Jonah wanted all the smoke this issue and ripped that guy’s arm off. Yep, the kid is nothing to mess with.

Superior Spider-Man #5 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
Otto is out here revealing his identity on the first date?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #93 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: City War begins here and Karai makes it a point to let everyone know she’s here to take lives and control the Foot and NY when this is all over!

Terrifics #16 (DC)
Martin:
4/5 stars. New writer Gene Luen Yang has some big shoes to fill after taking over from fan-favorite Jeff Lemire. Fortunately, fans of this series don’t appear to have anything to worry about.

Wonder Woman #69 (DC)
Martin:
4/5 stars. The story of the Oympian gods coming to earth, but changed, has been really fun & clever. This issue is no different with a very unique take on Cupids & the God(dess) of Lust & their effect on a small town. Maggie continues to be a fun character, too.

Venom #13 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
War of the Realms has given us the return of Venom and an old enemy and I’m here for both!
