Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 04/10/19

Amazing Spider-Man #19 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech
: I think Kraven’s son is going to screw everything up at some point but so far it’s a solid story.

Avengers: No Road Home #9 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
I thought this was going to be about Herc but everyone else seems to be getting more focus than the Son of Olympus. Not sure where this is going now.

Batman #68 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
Tom King is doing a number on my emotions right now! This was the funniest and yet saddest issue all at once.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Conner’s art is fantastic as always, & the 2 couples on their bachelor/bachelorette parties was a ton of fun (even if Bruce & Clark’s was awkward). But, I’m left wondering how many more fake scenarios we need to see before the story progresses.

Batman Who Laughs #4 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
This is for those serious fans of this version of Batman. Not me.
Martin: 4/5 stars. Spectacular art by Jock and an intriguing story by Snyder, who really knows how to handle the ins and outs of a Batman story to keep things unpredictable. The opening sequence has so much tension.

Catwoman #10 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
Joelle Jones is writing a Catwoman series everyone should check out!

Detective Comics #1001 (DC)
Martin:
3.5/5 stars. What works in this issue is the creepy intro with all of the dead bats around town, and the (re) introduction of Francine Langstrom. Less successful is the Arkham Knight character, despite all the build-up: Just another bad Batman.

Fairlady #1 (Image)
Martin
: 4/5 stars. Great beginning to a new fantasy series featuring the only female private investigator in a post-war world. Intriguing characters, great art, & imaginative world-building, plus a mystery to be solved. See my full review this week on @ComicAttack.

Flash #68 (DC)
Infinite Speech:
This feels like we’re just coasting till Year One kicks off.
Martin: This Trickster arc has been way darker than it needs to be, and just seems a bad fit for Flash. Please, just let Batman “own” dark, and return to some of the fun that Rebirth promised, especially with a character like the Flash.

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #5 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
Man…if Peter didn’t show up for Aunt May I would have lost all respect for the kid.

Hawkman #11 (DC)
Martin
: 3.5/5 stars. Visually stunning with large-scale battle pages with the Hawkmen (& a ton of new ones) introduced before, battling the Deathbringers. But, completely telegraphed 11 issues ago, it comes down to Carter vs Idamm, who survives because he has plot armor.

Hit Girl: Hollywood #3 (Image)
Infinite Speech:
Why is this happening again?

Justice League #10 (DC)
Martin
: 3/5 stars. Darkseid gives a long speech. Then he continues for about 1/3 of the issue. The other characters don’t get to do much except fight. Starfire is completely wasted in this, & Jessica Cruz bares no resemblance to her Green Lanterns version.

Livewire #5 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech:
Vita Ayala refuses to bring you a lackluster story and keeps putting Livewire through hell but it’s all so worth it!

Noble #17 (Lion Forge)
Infinite Speech:
First Brandon Tomas and now Kevin Grevioux is killing it on this series!

Orphan Age #1 (Aftershock)
Martin:
4/5 stars. A really strong beginning to an intense, creative premise. All of the world’s adults have died, leaving only the children. The interesting twist for this story is that we’re now 20 years in the future, and some of the survivors have kids of their own.

Ronin Island #2 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: I one didn’t see that one coming! Great twist from Greg Pak here but Kenichi is going to be even more upset with Hana now!

Superman #10 (DC)
Martin
: 3/5 stars. I’m not sure why there was a need to age Jon 10 years. I’m still hating crazy evil Jor-El, which makes no sense. There’s just not a ton to like in this series so far. Action is the much better Superman title in the Bendis era so far.

Supergirl #29 (DC)
Martin
: 3.5/5 stars. I really like how the creative team handles Supergirl, & I’m OK with Z’ndr & their relationship. I love that Krypto’s along for the ride. What keeps gnawing at me is why there’s a need to make Krypton’s destruction a conspiracy. Why mess with history?

War of the Realms: Journey into Mystery #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech
: Was NOT expecting to see ********** at the end of this but it made up for the Wonder Man appearance.

Web of Venom: Cult of Carnage #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech:
Why must some artists make Misty Knight look crazy? Get some references for Black women’s hair. There’s no excuse for that mess we had to see.

Wonder Twins #3 (DC)
Martin
: 4/5 stars. A fun issue with Gleek as the star, although his backstory is a bit dark for the overall tone of the rest of the issue. This series is still finding the tone it wants to have, but once it figures it out, it has good characters & a fun premise.

Wonder Woman #68 (DC)
Martin
: 4/5 stars. I really like the inspired choice to pair Diana with a non-reformed Giganta for this arc. Their interactions make for good story-telling, and complements the other great characterization in this arc, with Maggie & the mythological refugees.
