Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 02/01/17

Adventure Time #61 (Boom!)
NickZ: I’m sad to see Christopher Hastings go but he and Ian McGinty did a hell of a job wrapping up his run! Mathematical!

All-New X-Men #1.MU (Marvel)
NickZ: Laura and Gambit reunite just in time to fight monsters, meanwhile the young X-Men enjoy their first Mardi Gras!

All-New X-Men #18 (Marvel)
Arnab: This anti-Cyclops nonsense is getting old.
NickZ: I still do not understand the adult Cyclops hate even if he did what everyone thinks he did, especially from his younger self.

Aquaman #16 (DC)
Infinitespeech: Abnett is doing for Aquaman what he helped to do the cosmic characters from that other company and it’s awesome!

Batman #16 (DC)
Arnab: Probably one of the most fun issues of Batman we’ve had in a long while. So good.
Infinite Speech: King has turned this series around for me and I’m here for Bronze Tiger and more Robins interactions!
Martin: 4/5 stars. I really like the use of humor and some far-reaching jokes juxtaposed against the foreboding of what’s coming.
NickZ: This issue has the very best Bat-family meet up EVER! King and Finch nailed these characters perfectly! The Catwoman scene was spot on as well!

Champions #5 (Marvel)
Arnab: And just like that, this book had too many characters.
NickZ: Do people actually like this Gwen-pool character? I prefer my Champions without her.

Darth Maul #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: I’ve never understood the hype of this character and after reading this, I still don’t.

Deadly Class #26 (Image)
NickZ: F*** YES! This is how you subvert expectations and make every emotional moment reading this book worth it. I read this twice in a row, it made me so happy!

Deadpool #26 (Marvel)
NickZ: Deadpool’s problems ruin everyone’s Valentine’s Day plans, except for maybe Agent Coulson.

Deadpool and the Mercs For Money #8 (Marvel)
NickZ: That was an interesting “What If” story but not much more than that.

Death of Hawkman #5 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Great art and the story itself is interesting, but the way it’s written is a bit convoluted.

Fall and Rise of Captain Atom #2 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Nate gets thrown back in time to live in the 1990’s without any powers. A fun look at that era.

Green Arrow #16 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. An emotionally-packed story with a key character return and a dark ending that sets up the next arc.

Green Lanterns #16 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Love the art in this, & there’s also a good Batman tie-in. Baz & Jess’ reaction to the Bat Cave is spot-on.

Hawkeye #3 (Marvel)
NickZ: Kate is really living up to her Hawkeye legacy, and by that I mean she’s a hot mess!

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: The Newspaper Comic Strips (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: This collected edition is perfect for any fan of He-Man and looks great on any shelf and coffee table! These strips also bring back the hey day of these characters with a more serious touch.

Invincible #132 (Image)
NickZ: My feelings are all over the place on this one. I’m sad to see the end of Cory Walker’s probable last run on this book. The story itself was pretty shocking, sad, but also a major cop out.

Jem and the Misfits #2 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: If Stormer isn’t your favorite Misfit then she should be after this issue!

Justice League #14 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. I like how Baz & Jess interact with each other, but this story retreads familiar ground from their own book.
NickZ: The League decides to have a team-building seminar in the middle of a world ending crisis. Way to go “heroes”.

Monsters Unleashed #2 (Marvel)
NickZ: Heroes bashing monsters is much better than heroes bashing each other and more fun too.

Moon Knight #11 (Marvel)
NickZ: The thing about this book is that you never know what is real and what isn’t because Marc doesn’t even know.

Nightwing #14 (DC)
Arnab: This whole superhero secret business not being a secret is getting ridiculous.
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Really good art & some good Dick Grayson character-building moments, but as an arc finale this needed more oomph
NickZ: Another great issue from Tim Seeley and Marcus To with a very WTF ending. I also loved the little Joyride easter egg.

Old Man Logan #17 (Marvel)
NickZ: I am continuously blown away by Sorrentino’s art in this book and how well it works with Lemire’s storytelling.

Paper Girls #11 (Image)
NickZ: The girls’ amazing time-traveling shenanigans land them in even more deep water!

Planet of the Apes/Green Lantern #1 (BOOM!/DC)
Infinite Speech: The crossover I didn’t know that I wanted until it actually happened and now I gotta see how this ends!

Superman #16 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This gets high marks for incorporating tons of ideas from DC’s Multiverse and showcasing all those characters.
NickZ: “Because it’s in places like this that hope burns brightest!”- This quote sums up Superman’s greatest power, being a beacon of hope.

The Walking Dead #163 (Image)
Arnab: Someone’s going to die and I don’t want it to be any of them.
NickZ: This is the threat that should have been at the climax of “The Whisperer War”.

The Woods #29 (Boom!)
NickZ: The scope of this story continues to get larger and larger as the series gets better and better!
