Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 01/25/17

Action Comics #972 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Really great character-expanding moments in Supes/Lex’s relationship, & a great set-up for the Mr. Oz stuff
NickZ: It feels unfathomable to have Superman and Lex Luthor defend and even respect each other. We’ll see how long it lasts.

Batgirl #7 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Uneven story, but has my fave scene this week. Barb orders a Vodka-Soda-Cran which bartenders calls a “White Girl”!
NickZ: How does Penguin have a son? and how does he look like THAT?

Batman TMNT Adventures #3 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: I’m definitely in favor of a Raphael/Robin team-up after reading this!
NickZ: This is the fun you wanted to see in that previous Batman/TMNT crossover. The Joker irritating Shredder is the best!

Black Panther #10 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: After Shuri’s sequence the issue was a very long set up that didn’t excite much.

Blue Beetle #5 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. The interactions of the characters (Jaime, his mom, Ted, Teri, the Posse, Sugar & Spike…) make this so fun!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer #3 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: Art imitates life as the government creates internment camps for all supernatural Americans. Bravo to Dark Horse, Christos Gage and Rebekah Isaacs for using their medium in this way.

Conan The Slayer #6 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech: From story to art everything about this series takes what’s great about Conan to another level!

Deadpool #25 (Marvel)
NickZ: Pretty much the way you would expect a Deadpool family reunion to go.

Detective Comics #949 (DC)
Arnab: No lie, a lot more interesting than I thought it would be, considering half the reason I was reading this was for the rest of the team.
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. Almost a Batwoman origin complete with her 1st meeting with Batman. The art really sells this. Beautiful!
NickZ: Okay, Tynion and Bennett have convinced me to give the new Batwoman series a chance.

Divinity III: Stalinverse #2 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: It doesn’t matter what world they are in, Valiant’s superheroes are some of the best in comics!

Doctor Strange #16 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: As much hell as Jason Aaron puts Doctor Strange through I’m wondering if he likes the guy.
NickZ: A greatly diminished Dr Strange must face his 3 most powerful enemies using only his wits and bravado. It’s pretty cool to see.

Doom Patrol #4 (DC)
NickZ: This book is so nutty but I love it!

Extraordinary X-Men #18 (Marvel)
NickZ: Major Forge/Storm feels in full effect! Also, how bad ass is old man Forge?

Flash #15 (DC)
Infinite Speech: The Rogues put one over on Flash in another great issue from Williamson and Di Giandomenico!
Martin: 4/5 stars. Sometimes the Rogues can come off as too goofy or comical, but this arc fixes that by showing how they work together.

Hillbilly #5 (Albatross)
Infinite Speech: Two great stories and Rondel is my favorite hillbilly since Patrick Swayze in Next of Kin!

Infamous Iron Man #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: This is the best Iron Man series that I have ever read! Doom is such a bad ass!

Inhumans vs X-Men #3 (Marvel)
Arnab: The Nuhumans were not raised under the religion of the Terrigen Mist, but are willing to let all mutants die over its existence? KILL THEM.
NickZ: The Inhumans strike back! Come on old man Logan, are you still the best at what you do?

Jem and the Holograms #23 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Everything about this series has been fantastic since the first issue and with Thompson’s excellent writing it should stay that way!

Joyride #9 (Boom!)
NickZ: Such a fantastic series full of great characters and amazing sci-fi adventures!

Justice League of America: Killer Frost Rebirth #1 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Gives more background on Amanda Waller than Caitlin Snow. We don’t get much info about Frost at all.

Justice League vs. Suicide Squad #6 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Wraps up the “main event” way too quickly & mainly focuses on setting up the new JLA series.
NickZ: Are all DC events going to end with more villains joining the Justice League?

Kamandi Challenge #1 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. I’m a sucker for this old Kirby character & post-apoc in general. But this is a fun premise for everyone.

Lady Castle #1 (BOOM!)
Infinite Speech: Dawson’s story is straight up fun and Woods’ art keeps everything looking fantastic!

Over the Garden Wall #10 (Boom!)
NickZ: I get that these stories are for little kids but can we please get back to the main story?

Reborn #4 (Image)
NickZ: Bonnie is on her way to becoming a true bad ass! This book also is a great reminder to be nice to your pets, you know, just in case they become super powerful in the afterlife.

Saga #42 (Image)
Arnab: Such a devastatingly sad issue.
NickZ: The world is too horrible right now to have this book be ending in literal darkness.

Savage #3 (Valiant)
Infinite Speech: Savage is one of the new Valiant titles that you should have on your list. It’s got an engaging story and art from two of the most talented guys in the industry.

Spider-Man Deadpool #1.MU (Marvel)
NickZ: Spidey, Deadpool, teen witches, and monsters, oh my!

Suicide Squad #10 (DC)
NickZ: Out of all the threads left over from Justice League vs Suicide Squad, this is a pretty weak one to use to take down Amanda Waller.

Teen Titans #4 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. This arc has been working toward this moment, when the characters actually coalesce as a team. It works well.
NickZ: I think the Titans are actually going to be really good for Damian. They are exactly the type of people he needs to bring him back down to earth.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #66 (IDW)
Arnab: Absolutely stunning artwork. Sophie Campbell did such a remarkable job with this issue.
Infinite Speech: Sophie Campbell drew the hell out of this issue and made everything that much more fun from cover to cover!

Totally Awesome Hulk #15 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Greg Pak put his heart in this story as this cast of Asian characters bond then get ready to stop an invasion!

Wayward #20 (Image)
Infinite Speech: Ever been kicked in the gut by a giant kangaroo with steel toed boots? Well, that’s what this felt like after reading Jim Zub’s story. Damn.

Wonder Woman #15 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. WW is actually in this very little. Mostly setting up Godwatch. Art inconsistent compared to previous issues.
