Action Comics #1006 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A secret criminal organization in Metropolis that knows they can’t beat Superman is an interesting idea. Bendis’ slow pace is killing my interest, though. The tease of the car from the cover of Action Comics #1 is intriguing.
NickZ: There is a very interesting reveal at the end of this issue but I’m not exactly sure what it means. Also, does anyone else find Red Cloud to just be annoying.
Aspen Visions: Executive Assistant: Iris: The Midst of Chaos #1 (Aspen)
Infinite Speech: It never works out well for people who try to capture and contain Iris. Interested to see where this crossover is going when Aspen finally enters the story.
Books of Magic #3 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. The strongest of the new “Sandman Universe” books, this issue delves more into Tim’s character and feelings, and the mystery surrounding his “missing” former teacher. The way Tim accesses and uses his magical powers is also very creative.
Champions #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: This entire issue was great but those last few pages brings Miles to an all new level of supervillain. I don’t think he’s ready.
Coda #8 (Boom! Studios)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. After eight issues of this series, I can say I was honestly surprised, and a little heart-broken, over how this issue ended. Hum’s actions were eventually going to come to light, but the emotional pain with which they do resonates so strongly.
Conan the Barbarian #1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I went back and forth on whether or not to pick this up but it seems like there’s still some good Conan stories to tell. Oh, and if he could keep it in his loincloth he’d be in a lot less trouble.
Deadpool #8 (Marvel)
NickZ: Bringing back that character is the first sign of this book having any king of substance or depth since Young started writing it.
Detective Comics #995 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Tomasi’s better than this. Now that that’s out of the way, I don’t mind characters being killed off if it serves a purpose and if it’s not being done just to be undone later. Also, a skilled assassin would have killed Alfred straight out.
NickZ: I am so distraught over THAT death in this issue! As much as I love his work, I can’t even right now with Peter Tomasi!
Flash #61 (DC)
Infinite Speech: Fuerza really needed that hug but I’m not sure why Iris is along for the ride here. Hope Williamson changes my mind soon.
Martin: 4/5 stars. The strength of this issue largely relies on the relationship between Barry and Fuerza, and Barry and Iris, as well as the intriguing introduction of a new Sage Force user. All that added to an interesting story & strong art makes for a great issue.
Heroes in Crisis #4 (DC)
Infinite Speech: The Harley and Batgirl dynamic here is the best thing to happen to this series and actually made me care about what’s going on beyond the shock moments.
Martin: 3/5 stars. The idea behind this series, that heroes might suffer PTSD and need therapy to deal with it, is an admirable one. It’s an idea more successfully explored in a recent “Astro City” arc. Here, it’s too dark & grim rather than hopeful.
NickZ: Harley and Batgirl are an interesting duo, and the events going on with the trinity are intriguing, but the Blue and Gold reunion sold me on this issue! “Bros before heroes!”
Infinity Wars: Infinity #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: This comic is just the tip of the iceberg on how crazy things are going to be now that the Infinity Stones each have a life of their own now.
Injustice vs Masters of the Universe #6 (DC)
Infinite Speech: All of these great MOTU team up books are great but it makes me just want a series set on Eternia.
Justice League Odyssey #4 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. So far, this series just hasn’t coalesced into a compelling story. Azrael’s purpose on the team is out of place. The concept of 3 of the team members being worshiped as gods has promise, but not enough follow-through.
NickZ: Azrael riding robot dinosaurs, a giant Motherbox, and the return of Blackfire! This issue had something for everyone!
Killmonger #3 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: I expect to get a great story from Hill and Ferreyra and that’s what happens here. You should check this one out especially if you’re new to the character.
Low #20 (Image)
NickZ: We get an enlightening history lesson on the world of Low and Stel realizes that her efforts to save her people may actually lead to the death of them all!
Mr. & Mrs. X #7 (Marvel)
NickZ: Mojo putting Rogue and Gambit in a reboot of Moonlighting is hilarious but I don’t think many readers will even get the reference.
Scarlet #5 (Jinxworld/DC)
Infinite Speech: Scarlet finds out her revolution is bigger than she imagined but I still don’t feel like much happened beyond that.
Shatterstar #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: Shatterstar kicks major ass in dramatic, show stopping fashion the likes of which only someone born of the Mojoverse could pull off.
Terrifics #11 (DC)
Martin: 4.5/5 stars. 4 individual stories due to the team splitting up. All are good, but 2 stand-out: 1st, all the alternate versions of Michael Holt are being hunted & killed across the multiverse, a creative idea. 2nd, Plastic Man tries reuniting with his ex & son.
Titans #32 (DC)
NickZ: Not many comics would devote an entire issue to the villain’s back story, I’ll give them that.
The Umbrella Academy Hotel Oblivion #4 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: Everything goes to hell in this issue, it will be interesting to see how the kids get out of this one.
Uncanny X-Men #8 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Apocalypse emerging from the rubble was one of my favorite panels by R.B. Silva in here but that ending! WOW! Don’t know what the X-Men will do against all that power!
NickZ: This is not the first time, but I completely agree with Apocalypse, the X-Men should have ended Legion and X-Man while they had the chance.
The Walking Dead #187 (Image)
NickZ: Don’t we all just want Carl and Sophia to hook up already? Also, I’m still not feeling Rick and Michonne’s recent actions.
Wonder Woman #61 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. I like the take on the confused Greek gods, not understanding their place in the world or why they’re different, & I really like seeing Diana moving around the battlefield helping civilians instead of just fighting. Also, Steve, put a damn shirt on.
Wolverine the Long Night #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: Never got the chance to listen to the podcast of this but I have to say I am really enjoying this story! It definitely doesn’t feel like your standard “superhero story”, in fact, it doesn’t feel like a superhero comic at all!
