Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 03/20/14

Action Comics #999 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Jurgens tries to tie things up before handing over the reigns to Bendis. The Superman-Hank Henshaw stuff is interesting and shows why Superman is a better “man” than most. The resolution of the Lois and Sam Lane feud falls a little flat.
NickZ: Superman’s unrelenting optimism and belief in doing the right thing is what makes him such an inspiration, but in this instance, I feel it’s so naive that it’s down right dangerous.

All-New Wolverine #32 (Marvel)
NickZ: Any occasion to use your Nazi-Stomping boots is an automatic plus in my book!

Astonishing X-Men #9 (Marvel)
NickZ: This book keeps you guessing if Proteus or the man call X is the real threat that the X-Men need to stop and that makes for an interesting read.

Avengers #684 (Marvel)
NickZ: The Hulk was already over-powered enough without making him immortal on top of it.

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey #20 (DC)
NickZ: With the Calculator hitting each of the Birds where it hurts, now is not the best time for an internal breakdown.

The Beauty #20 (Image)
NickZ: Just as they were about to get the proof they needed to blow this story wide open, everything went straight to hell!

Ben Reilly: The Scarlet Spider #15 (Marvel)
NickZ: If you wanted to know what lead up to The Scarlet Spider’s dramatic appearance in Damnation, then this is the book for you! Also, Khary Randolph & Emilio Lopez’s is cover is pretty dope!

Deadly Class #32 (Image)
NickZ: Deadly Class is back with a non-stop, action-packed issue and boy oh boy, does Wes Craig know how to draw some spectacular fight scenes! (That splash page needs to be made into a poster!) I can’t wait for the next issue!

Detective Comics #976 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Does a good job improving on some of the downfalls from last issue. The most emotion still comes from interactions between Cass & Clayface (in a flashback), but there are great scene with Bruce & Tim as well. Fernandez & Kalisz art works well.
NickZ: This path that Tim Drake seems to be on is made even more interesting if you’ve read his time as Batman Beyond. Also, I’m pretty shocked at Batwing and Azrael’s decision in regards to the Colony.

Doctor Strange #387 (Marvel)
NickZ: Mephisto toys with Doctor Strange leading him to make some very unfortunate mistakes.

Flash #42 (DC)
Martin: 3.5/5 stars. Some of the art is a bit inconsistent from page to page, and I am truly tired of angry, obsessed Barry. That said, Grodd always makes an interesting villain and the idea of a new Flash Family has me hopeful.

Green Lantern Earth One #1 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. Bechko and Hardman do a fantastic job re-imagining Hal Jordan’s Silver Age origins for this non-continuity line, but while still respecting much of GL history and mythos. Justice League of America #26 (DC)
NickZ: Only Batman could manipulate two villains into making the ultimate sacrifice to save an entire planet!

Marvel 2 in One #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: This book is worth the price of admission just to see Doom-Galactus and what that unholy union brought upon the universe!

Mister Miracle #7 (DC)
Martin: 5/5 stars. I never knew I could be so entertained by reading an entire issue about a couple in a hospital waiting for their baby to be born. King includes some unexpected hospital visitors to move things along, and Gerads art is still perfect.
NickZ: This series continues to be a masterpiece with the best labor story ever told!

The New Mutants Dead Souls #1 (Marvel)
NickZ: I think this story was vomited up my some hipster millennial kid.

Old Man Logan #36 (Marvel)
NickZ: Logan gets tangled in Mayor Kingpin’s cross-hairs and now he’s got a Bullseye on his back!

Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #301 (Marvel)
NickZ: What’s better than one Spider-Man beating up villains while verbally roasting them? Two Spider-Men beating up villains and riffing off each other!

Postal Laura #1 (Top Cow)
NickZ: This felt like the finale this amazing series deserved. If this is the last time we visit Eden (I hope it’s not), then i am more than happy with this ending.

Red Hood and the Outlaws #20 (DC)
NickZ: It seems this Bizarro story has finally come to a head! or the edge of an axe to be more precise.

Supergirl #19 (DC)
Martin: 4/5 stars. A very touching, one-off story about Supergirl’s ability to inspire and provide hope for those who are feeling lost and without a voice. It’s done been before, but Orlando, Ayala, and Campbell make this one truly special.

Titans #21 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. What started out as one of my favorite Rebirth titles due to utilizing the original Wally West, has turned into a mess of dark, brooding drama that’s no longer fun to read. The “B” story with Brain and Monsieur Mallah was the highlight of this issue.
NickZ: The writing in this book is pretty terrible. Everyone is acting so unreasonably out of character just to justify this ridiculous plot.

Trinity #19 (DC)
NickZ: For all three of the trinity realizing they were being duped, they sure did reveal a lot of Intel to a dangerous threat before they exposed him.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #30 (Marvel)
NickZ: Squirrel Girls space “vacation” photos are the best thing you will see in a comic book this week.

Weapon X #15 (Marvel)
NickZ: Sabretooth and Old Man Wolverine fight it out because of a birthday tradition? Do they ever really need a reason?

Wonder Woman #42 (DC)
Martin: 3/5 stars. Merino’s art in this issue is really great, which partially helps make up for a lackluster story that doesn’t really seem to ever go anywhere. Robinson is a great writer so hopefully he can get this back on track soon.

X-Men Blue #23 (Marvel)
NickZ: Looks like Emma has committed to going back to being a full on villain again.
