Character Spotlight: The Enchantress

Character Spotlight: The Enchantress

There have been two Enchantresses in the Marvel universe, they’re closer to each other than either would want to admit. Both have great magical power and penchant for green outfits. How do you get not one but two Enchantresses? Let’s find out!

Amora

Her origins a mystery. Amora was only a teen when she would apprentice under the powerful sorceress, Karnilla, learning the ways of magic. While she studied for years, learning much, she would be expelled for being too undisciplined. Using her legendary beauty, she would learn from other spellcasters through seduction to gain further skill and power in magic. She would find a long-time companion in Skurge the Executioner, who could bring the brawn for her schemes.

Many of Amora’s targets were originally Asgardians and she would stay on Asgard for many years. It would be Thor’s exile to Midgard (Earth) that would present Amora with the challenge to bring his mortal form to be by her side. Proving to be unsuccessful, she found herself interested with her new playground of Earth and made it her new target, working with many villains of Earth and Asgard alike.

When Ragnarok came to Asgard, like all other Asgardians, Amora would die. Thankfully, all Asgardians would be reformed as mortals, unaware of their true lineage unless reminded of it by another. Thor was seeking out to remind the Asgardians of their true selves but he would keep Amora in the dark as he found her too untrustworthy. Loki would regain some of his memories and would aide Amora in returning her memories as well. She would continue her old ways once fully back to normal and even help teach Captain Marvel how to defend herself from magic but vow revenge when the Captain would injure Amora’s future son.

Sylvie Lushton

When Asgard fell, it was remade, hovering above Broxton, Oklahoma. One morning, average teen Sylvie Lushton would wake up to find she now had magical powers. Realizing she could use these to be a hero, she took on an outfit similar to that of the Enchantress, taking on her moniker as well, and find other heroes to work with. She would find a group calling themselves the Young Avengers, even though there was already a Young Avengers team running around. This team was far more violent and gruesome in their crime fighting, Sylvie would do her best to make the others act heroically with her enchantments.

The team would gain the attention of the pre-existing Young Avengers who would confront them about their name. The two would fight for a bit but Sylvie would aide in getting them to work together. As the original Young Avengers looked into this new team, there were discoveries about Sylvie’s origins. Turns out, Loki had decided it was interesting to make a new person with powers. Now, whether this meant that Sylvie was just someone Loki deigned to give powers or Loki created Sylvie whole cloth, is still uncertain.

Her old team would become known as the Young Masters and while she was briefly allowed in the Young Avengers, her ties to Loki made them worry about trusting her, sending her back to the Young Masters. Since Asgard had returned, it wasn’t long until the original Enchantress returned, upset that her name and look was being used by someone else. Sylvie was shunted off somewhere else in the ten realms, if she was able to survive, she could keep the name and have a friend in Amora the Enchantress.

There you have it! Enchantress has been animated several times and recently got a new form in live action in the Loki series. Where will we find Enchantress next? Who really knows at this point? See you next time!
