Character Spotlight: Sailor Moon

Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight, never running from a real fight, who is she? She is the one named Sailor Moon! How did a lazy school girl become a super-powered hero leading a team against threats to the Earth. How does time travel get involved? Why the moon? Let’s find out!

Usagi Tsukino was running late to school so she didn’t really pay much attention to where she was going and ends up stepping on a cat that seems to have a bald spot. She would continue to see the cat, who seemed to be following her through out the day. This cat would begin talking to her, but since she’d been napping she thought she was still dreaming so she went along with what the cat said, not really believing it. She is told that she is Sailor Moon, Lunar royalty in a past life and will be once more in the future and that the cat, Luna, is her aide. She is given a brooch that will allow her to transform when she is needed to fight.

The problem with young Usagi is that currently, she’s lazy and would rather relax and eat food instead of do school work let alone fight anyone. She soon begins to learn how to do what needs to be done, finding assistance from the not terribly mysterious, Tuxedo Mask. She’d begin finding threats to her fellow students and family which she knew she couldn’t let stand, Luna was there to push her if she needed to be. As time went on, she’d discover other Sailors like herself, fellow students who would find friendship with Usagi and soon find herself leading them.

Usagi would realize that as time went on, her future was mostly written for her, she just had to figure out how to get to that level of power and being capable of such responsibility. This became very clear when her own daughter would travel back in time to fight alongside her. She’d also deal with her romance with Mamoru Chiba, Tuxedo Mask, who was also part of the same past life and future life as Usagi’s partner. She’d also deal with the constant advice from Luna who was her most direct line to what was and would be again.

Her greatest relationships, though, would be with her friends the other Sailor Senshi, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Each were their own princesses for the celestial bodies they represented. Their love for one another would help them support one another when things got tough. Her powers would improve with a variety of skills to build upon. Their many adventures together would lead to many highs and lows for the team that would become like a family as time went on. Usagi would mature as she grew into her title and destiny, great dangers await her still as she works to keep the galaxy safe from those who’d threaten it.

There you have it! Not wanting to get into spoiler territory, the story will have to be left vague so as to not delve too deep. There’s plenty of manga, anime, and live-action adaptations to partake in to see Usagi and her friends fight for the forces of good. She and her team would come to help define the magical girl genre. Perhaps more coverage of the other Sailor Senshi is needed. See you next time!
