Character Spotlight: Kaldur’ahm

Imagine growing up told to never go near bodies of water. Born covered in tattoos and again, your parents have no answers for you either. Then you get enveloped in water at some point and your whole world changes. Who is this? Kaldur’ahm, the second Aqualad. So what got him to where he was and what happens next? Let’s find out!

Kaldur’ahm is the child of Black Manta, one of Aquaman’s greatest foes. His mother was killed while Black Manta was trapped in the Bermuda triangle along with her an d other strange beings. Mera, wife to Aquaman and queen of Atlantis would help Kaldur escape along with a married couple whose ship had been trapped in the Bermuda triangle as well. She informed them to keep him ignorant of his heritage and powers and away from water so he could stay hidden from his father and others who may hunt him.

Now going by Jackson Hyde, Kaldur was raised to fear and stay away from the water and never taught to swim. He would be well into his teen years when he would learn the truth about his parentage and his powers. His biological father would arrive to attack him, revealing he didn’t care about his son except for what good he could do for him. Aquaman would stop Black Manta from killing Kaldur’s adoptive father. Now with Aquaman helping, Kaldur learns of his true history from a recording Mera had left for him, he would also be given magical blade handles to help him focus his powers of manipulating water.

Joining Aquaman, Kaldur would begin a life of heroics and fighting his biological father. He’d come to find the Atlantian royals to become his new family. No longer fearing the water but protecting it. He’d even go on to join the Teen Titans and find new friends who accepted him and also had unique powers of their own. While absent in the New 52, Kaldur returns in the DC Rebirth as a San Franciscan who discovers his powers and soon joins the Teen Titans.

There you have it! Kaldur’ahm is one of the cooler additions to the Aquaman family, Aquafam. He gains popularity and notice on the animated series Young Justice where he lead the team and had a different backstory from his comic’s counterpart but several key components are shared by both. Will we ever see Kaldur’ahm in either the upcoming Aquaman movie or on any of the CW shows? Time will tell! See you next time!

May be asking much but I wish he’d be more like the Young Justice version. But I’m only saying that because that’s where I was first introduced to the character
