Character Spotlight: Hellsing

Character Spotlight: Hellsing

When you discover that monsters are very real with powers that can and will hurt you and others, you may decide now is the time to organize and fight back. Abraham Van Helsing realized after fighting off Dracula that this was necessary for the survival of humanity. So how did one man create England’s greatest force against creatures of the night? Let’s find out!

After helping defeat Dracula, Abraham Van Helsing would bound the creature to his bloodline. Forcing the vampire to follow the commands of whichever family member was in charge. Seeing that such threats to humanity needed to be crushed, Abraham would found Hellsing, Her Royal England Legions of Legitimate Supernatural Immortal Night Guard, to protect not just England but the world from all paranormal threats.

As the family grew, they went from the Van Helsings to the Hellsings, branding is important, as are magical bindings. The head of Hellsing would have access to summoning Dracula, now going by Alucard, to do their bidding. The English government accepts the aide that Hellsing gives, though somewhat begrudgingly, due to the organizations use of monsters to fight monsters. It feels dangerous to many that Hellsing will employ the very enemy they are sworn to fight to work for them. Playing with fire, if you will.

During World War 2, when the Nazis were seeking out all manner of occult power to aide in taking over the world, Hellsing showed they were prepared to counter. Hellsing not only had Alucard on their side but special agents who were able to hold their own against the hordes of darkness. The Hellsing organization proved its methods worked and even if they made for strange bedfellows, they were able to bring a lot to the table when things were dire.

While Hellsing is the Royal Order of Protestant Knights for England, they did find themselves at odds with rival order of the Vatican, Iscariot, with similar goals but far more faithful to keeping monsters out of their ranks, or so they claim. While both agencies fight monsters, Iscariot takes great insult at the use of vampires as agents. Iscariot would prove to not be alone in this regard.

Even though Hellsing and the world at large were able to defeat the Nazis during World War 2, the vile group found its way back into the modern day. Millenium, the former occult division of the Nazi party was alive and well, with all manner of supernatural beings employed by the organization. Both human and paranormal monsters united to destroy their biggest threat, Alucard and the Hellsing organization.

So the lines were drawn, while Hellsing’s goal was to eliminate all monsters, it became the retaliation of all evil creatures to do their best to survive. The current head of Hellsing is Integra Hellsing, who leads with a cool head and willing to do what it takes to stop any monstrous threat. Alucard stands at the ready to fight for his master, now aided by a new vampire agent, Seras. Iscariot is just as ready to destroy Millenium as it is Hellsing and Millenium is ready with an army of its own seeking vengeance and world domination once more, the battle is set.

There you have it! Hellsing is a violent, action horror series that went from manga, to anime series to an OVA series. There have been many Alucards over the years and this is a top tier example who isn’t even a son of Dracula. Have you read or watched Hellsing before? See you next time!
