Character Spotlight: Catarina Claes

What would you do if you found yourself reincarnated into the last video game you played? How much trouble would you be in? For the new Catarina Claes of the video game, Fortune Lover, she’s going to do whatever it takes to survive in this story where she’s meant to be the villain. How does she plan on doing this? Let’s find out!

The original Catarina Claes was born to Duke and Duchess, Luigi and Millidiana Claes. Growing up, spoiled and with the ideas of hierarchy and nobility being the most important things in life, Catarina would become a cruel bully. She would neglect her adoptive brother, Keith, leaving him to become a playboy for attention. Her betrothal to the crowned prince, Geordo Stuart, was all because he had accidentally injured her as a child, leaving a scar on her forehead.

While her family had ties to earth magic, Catarina’s was fairly weak and she could only muster up creating bumps in the ground that she would use to bully others by tripping them up. By the time she was of age to enter the magic academy, she was cruel and loathed the commoner who was allowed to enter. As this was an otome game, with dating simulation at its core, Catarina’s role as a villain made it so any suitors she had ties with had her either dying or being exiled in the end.

This was all without reincarnation, though, things change in an alternate path once Catarina gets the injury that leaves her scarred in the forehead. This time, it jars awake the past life of a seventeen-year-old Japanese girl who had played the video game, Fortune Lover. The world that Catarina lived in, and now this girl as her, meant that the new Catarina was well aware of what her future in this world held, doom. The new Catarina would dedicate herself to averting these disastrous ends by being as kind and caring as possible.

Instead of becoming a bully, she would dedicate herself to farming, figuring this could make her better at her earth magic. While this proved to not be the case, she found a new love of the work and maintains doing it in case she does get exiled, she can live off the land. She would befriend and care for her adoptive brother, who would now develop feelings for her instead of becoming a playboy for attention.

Prince Geordo would still become her betrothed due to a misunderstanding this time but now he found himself charmed by this kind Catarina. Catarina would also end up befriending all the suitors and competitors from Fortune Lover. Not only did she befriend them, but she unwittingly seduced them since she echoed interactions that she half-remembered from the video game and just with her genuine kindness and caring. Catarina is entirely unaware of any of these feelings she’s gathered, too panicked into worrying about her possibly doomed fate. She has made the lives of everyone around her better than what it would have been had she never realized her past life.

By the time she and the others are entering the magic academy, she even ends up winning the heart of the game’s main character, Mary. Still oblivious that her entire friend group harbors feelings for her, she is often trying to get them together with one another, misreading their awkwardness and rivalries as being smitten with each other. Catarina is also realizing that it’s been nearly a decade since she can remember playing the video game so there are still hidden paths she only vaguely heard of from her past life. These other endings and paths can lead to great danger for not just her, but the entire kingdom. To make things even more complicated, she might not be the only person reincarnated from her old world.

There you have it! My Next Life as a Villainess started as a light novel series and then became a manga and anime series. Catarina is often getting into all sorts of adventures and trouble as she’s left unaware of the feelings of everyone else around her. Where she’ll end up next is just as up in the air for us as it is for her. See you next time!
