Black Dynamite is back, and this time Brian Ash is teamed with the talented Ron Wimberly to bring us a tale of the baddest ex-CIA Agent whose kung fu is colder than a polar bear’s toe nails! But this time it seems as if all the good Black Dynamite has been doing for the community is about to backfire on him. So once again, Alex Haley shows up to shed some light on the situation which leads Black Dynamite to make a big sacrifice for everyone.

Much like he did with Black Dynamite: Slave Island, Brian Ash captures the voice and feel of the 2009 hit film Black Dynamite and the animated series, but he is still able to make this issue stand on its own. It looks like we’re getting an origin story of sorts, as there’s a little bit of time hopping while Ash builds this issue. The dialogue is also filled with that classic humor from the film, though none of it gets in the way of telling the story.

Ron Wimberly’s style is all his own and he makes sure it looks good while delivering visuals reminiscent of 70s comics. There are some really great moments in the issue as he shifts the tone and syncs up with Ash’s script almost perfectly. Sal Buscema’s colors put the look over the top as the combination just settles you in to a time where color palettes might not sync up with the artwork, but it’s still very cool nonetheless. Some might find this visual throwback coloring choice a bit distracting (especially younger comic readers), but it’s a little touch that gives the book some added character.

For any Black Dynamite fan this is a must have to enhance the already righteous experience Michael Jai White, Byron Minns, and Scott Sanders started. And if you have any doubt about adding this issue to your collection, just know that Black Dynamite punches a shark in the face on one of the covers! So, your argument is invalid. Are you pickin’ up what I’m puttin’ down? If so, then grab Black Dynamite #1!
