For years, comic book video games were a mixed bag but in recent years we’ve been getting more and more games that end up defining video games as a whole. I was lucky enough to get to play around with several games, some that wont be out for a few months and others that you can play right now. How did it go? Let’s find out!
First up was a phone game I’ve been enjoying, Marvel Strike Force, it’s a turn-based combat game where you collect your favorite heroes, along with tons of no name flunkies like Hand Assassins and SHIELD Medics to fight for you in a myriad of adventures. It’s simple and has plenty of the pitfalls free-mium phone games have but it’s still a lot of fun for someone who enjoys Marvel comics and turn-based combat. While at con they revealed that Ms. Marvel will be joining the game as a new type of Support hero who will use her shape-stretching abilities to protect her allies and herself. When I asked about the games teasings of Venom and Okoye they said they were still in development but Venom might be out in time for his theatrical premiere.
If you ever had the inkling to pretend you were a Ghostbuster, whether it was when you were a kid or even now as an adult, there’s Ghostbusters World coming to your phone in the coming months. Similar in play to Pokémon Go, you can travel your surroundings to bust ghosts and collect them to fight other players’ captured ghosts. The level of detail to our surroundings in San Diego were really well defined and while it may just be because it was a demo for their, but if it’s for most places, then it’s got a visual leg up on Pokémon. Busting ghosts feels good and has you dodging ghost attacks while hitting them with your proton pack’s stream and using other gadgets for special cases. Raids will include fights like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. If you like Pokémon Go or the dinosaur version in Jurassic World Alive, then this may be a game for your ghost busting desires.
My favorite game of the convention, though, was Spider-Man for the Playstation 4. Like many, I fell in love with the web-swinging in Spider-Man 2 for the Playstation 2/X-Box generation of consoles, it’s the gold standard that all Spider-Man games strive to be, so far, none have made it to that goal again. Until now, this game had me swinging around like it was nearly twenty years ago, but it felt even better since it was more like how nostalgia made it feel versus how I imagine that game may play now. The level of open world was apparent just in the wait to see the game, watching many folks playing the game and seeing so many different outcomes of what you can do in the demo alone. Almost everyone had different adventures going on since they had different segments they could go look at. Some were dealing with bank robberies, others were fighting atop rooftops, and some fought the Shocker. This 15 minute demo had me itching to go back constantly through out the con to play it again, this is definitely day one purchase for me.
There you have it! This may have been my favorite San Diego Comic Con in a long time. There’s were plenty of amazing things I didn’t get to see but wanted to. What were your favorite things from the con? What do you hope to see next time? Got anything you’d recommend for me? Get any cool exclusives? See you next time!
