Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 9/28/2011

All-Star Western #1 (DC)
Andy: Moritat is a great choice to draw this book. I hope he sticks around for awhile.

Amazing Spider-Man #670 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Somewhere on Spider Island is a girl named Charlotte who just got turned into a giant spider. Oh, the irony. Glad this event is still great to read!
Jeff: The awesomeness of Spider-Island continues! Don’t give up on events just yet, folks, this one wins!

American Vampire #19 (Vertigo)
Andy: Take note: Cave dwelling Vampires who lived in the 1800s had amazing booblies.
Arnab: There comes a time when you just stop everything and say that Scott Snyder is best writer in comics.
Jeff: The secret history between Book and Skinner Sweet is explored, and is really freaking awesome!

Annihilators Earthfall #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Yep, the only thing this team annihilates is my time by reading it.

Artifacts #10 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Nice set up now it’s time for some action!

Astonishing X-Men #42 (Marvel)
Jeff: Well, I’m glad that’s over. Although I admit that Bobillo’s art kinda grew on me.
NickZ: Well that ended very conveniently. I wish Storm was the leader of an X-Team again.

Aquaman #1 (DC)
Andy: Can Geoff Johns do for Aquaman what he did for Green Lantern? Here’s hoping, but all signs are pointing to “yes.”
Andrew: It’s official. Aquaman is cool.
Arnab: This was good. A solid start with some action, suspense, and more importantly humor.
Infinite Speech: “How does it feel to be nobody’s favorite super hero?” Best line in the book! I’m getting #2!

Batman: The Dark Knight #1 (DC)
Andrew: I’m intrigued by the Wayne/Batman funding scandal, but the last page confused me. “One-Face”? WTF?
Arnab: The internal affairs plot has great potential. The breakout at Arkham was a little weird though.
Infinite Speech: Didn’t plan on picking this up and I’m not too sure if I should have.

Black Panther: Deadliest Man Alive #523.1 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: A nice done in one but it played out too much like a Batman story.

Blackhawks #1 (DC)
Andy: Great choice getting the guy who is writing the best G.I. Joe book on the stands (Cobra) to tackle this series. Everything Men of War wasn’t.

Cobra #5 (IDW)
Andy: Mike Costa is the best thing to ever happen to the G.I. Joe franchise.

Deadpool Max #12 (Marvel)
NickZ: As crazy and off the wall this series was, it actually made sense and was a fun read.

Epoch #2 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Martial arts and monsters are the icing on the cake with this series!

Fear Itself The Deep #4 (Marvel)
NickZ: I want a (Secret) Defenders book ASAP!

FF #9 (Marvel)
Arnab: Sometimes it feels as if this book is pages shorter than all of the other ones and yet so much happens.

The Flash #1 (DC)
Andy: I’m not a Flash fan and I thought this issue was great. Nice work Francis Manapul.
Arnab: I’m not particularly a Barry Allen fan, but this was a well executed book. Strong writing and gorgeous art.
NickZ: While I prefer my Flash in the Wally variety, I found this book to be quite good. I am definitely picking up the next issue. Also, Manapul’s art is awesome!

The Fury of Firestorm the Nuclear Men #1 (DC)
Andy: Not too bad. I was expecting much, much worse.
Arnab: The animosity between Jason and Ronnie is weird, sometimes awkward. Other than that, good start.
Infinite Speech: So in the New DC Universe black and white people really don’t get along and racial tension is at the heart of EVERY issue with a black character. Unless he’s in Africa and that cast is predominantly black.

Green Lantern: New Guardians #1 (DC)
Andy: How many times will Lanterns of different colors fight each other? Didn’t they just have the biggest team-up ever in Blackest Night? Yeesh.
Andrew: Really slow start for this title. I already don’t care anymore. Pass.
Arnab: This book was great for newbies, a little slow for veteran readers though.

I, Vampire #1 (DC)
Andy: If you skipped this book you missed one of the best books of the relaunch. I shit you not.
Arnab: I was persuaded into buying this book by my LCS. They were right. Now I’m persuading you. You’ll see, I’ll be right too.
Infinite Speech: Didn’t plan on picking this one up either. So glad I did and looking forward to the second issue.

Journey Into Mystery #628 (Marvel)
Andy: This is the best Fear Itself tie-in story. A slow burn, for sure, but it’s highly enjoyable. Portacio’s art has gotten waaay better since his recent Uncanny X-Men stuff, too.

Justice League: Dark #1 (DC)
Andrew: Not a great first issue, but they be building to something interesting.
Andy: The art is super cool, but what in the hell is going on? I’m a little lost.

Kick-Ass 2 #4 (Icon)
Andy: This is getting so violent it’s borderline unreadable. Shooting four 10 year old kids in the head, and then some, is where I draw the line.

Magdalena #8 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: It’s been a while between issues but Patience shows why she’s the one true Magdalena!
Andy: I have patience for Patience, but the delay in-between issues isn’t making things easy…

The Mighty Thor #6 (Marvel)
Andy: This story arc was Matt Fraction’s best superhero work since X-Men/Dark Avengers: Utopia. When it ends, it has meaning. Hopefully the changes last awhile.

The New Avengers #16.1 (Marvel)
Andy: A very well written issue. It looked good too. Too bad Neal Adams is a total dickhead.

New Mutants #31 (Marvel)
Jeff: This book is just awful. What happened to Abnett & Lanning? I thought they were supposed to be good?
NickZ: I enjoyed the cool little flashback story about Odin and the Serpent. Can Dani Moonstar get anymore bad ass?

Rachel Rising #1 (Abstract Studios)
Andy: I’m into it, but I want to know how this ties in with the recently concluded Echo…

Savage Hawkman #1 (DC)
Andrew: Started out interesting, then got really boring, but the last couple of pages were fun.
Andy: YES! This was so awesome! I love the new take on the costume and how Carter gets his powers. Also, this may be the best work I’ve ever seen by Philip Tan.

Snake Eyes #5 (IDW)
Infinite Speech: Snake Eyes and Chuck Norris should team up and take out Cobra. Too bad he has to settle for an infected Duke as a partner in this next arc.

Superman #1 (DC)
Andy: I like watching the news, but holy hell this put me to sleep.
NickZ: A pretty good start. This Superman/Clark is way less boring than the old one, but I can’t get used to Lois being with other guys.

Teen Titans #1 (DC)
Andy: I love how Scott Lobdell is writing my favorite DC character, Tim Drake, and how 20 years ago he was writing my favorite Marvel character, Bobby Drake.
Arnab: Fantastic start, other than the obvious problems maneuvering around Tim Drake’s maintained history and the rest of the Teen Titans’ modified history.

Ultimate Comics Ultimates #2 (Marvel)
Andy: Holy hell! Ragnarok is going down in the Ultimate Universe- AND NOBODY GIVES A SHIT!

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #2 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: BROOKLYN STAND UP!! There’s a new Spider-Man in town and Bendis is writing the hell out of this book!
Jeff: I’m really liking this. Not only is Miles Morales a good character, but Sara Pichelli can draw the crap out him.
Andy: Absolutely amazing. Loved the scene where Miles looks up to Iceman and Human Torch flying by. Well done.

Voodoo #1 (DC)
Infinite Speech: A little chatty about stripper loyalties but it’s a nice start and leaves you with a great cliffhanger.

Witchblade #148 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech: Marz must have told Sejic “Draw the biggest, ugliest, damn creature you can think of. Then make it bigger!” Wow Sara and Dani are going to have their hands full.

Wolverine #16 (Marvel)
Jeff: So that’s it? Logan kills his kids, jumps off a mountain a few times, lives with wolves for a while, and now he’s back to normal? Boo!
NickZ: The interviews of everyone talking about Wolverine were great! Everyone showing up to bring Wolverine home was a bit much.
Andy: Um… someone should tell Wolverine he has a shit load of arrows sticking out of him…

Wolverine The Best There Is #10 (Marvel)
NickZ: If you are going to make one story last 10+ issues, it should at least be a decent story. This series just fails on all levels.

X-Men Legacy #256 (Marvel)
Jeff: This story could have been wrapped up in this issue. Too bad it wasn’t.
NickZ: Can we just get them all home already? I don’t care about this war at all.

Be sure to catch up on all past Chirps here!

Loved the New Avengers story, and Andy is completely right. Neal Adams is a huge dickhead.
