Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 9/14/2011

Alpha Flight #4 (Marvel)
Andy: Notice how I omitted the “Fear Itself” tag from the title. Lets keep it that way.

Amazing Spider-Man #669 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: The other shoe has dropped as we get to see the downside of spider powers given by the Jakal. Should have seen it coming folks!
Jeff: Everybody give a hand to The Shocker…oh, wait, he already has 6 of them!
Andy: Man, I really thought Spider-Island was going to be a sack of lame. It’s anything but! I wonder who will keep their Spider Powers when it’s all over…

American Vampire: Survival of the Fittest #4
Arnab: Oh my damn, this book is fantastic on so man levels. From issue to issue Snyder and Murphy weave a web of brilliance and present it to us on a platter.
Jeff: Big action, great character moments, fantastic art, Snyder and Murphy are masters!

Awakening (Archaia)
Infinite Speech: Same great story with a few added behind the scenes extras to expand your reading experience!

Batman and Robin #1 (DC)
Andrew: Damian has never been so hateable! Maybe Peter J. Tomasi’s best Batman script yet.
Andy: What the hell was this? Emo Batman is NOT cool. This one would have been so much better is Bruce didn’t sob through it.
Arnab: Not the best start. At all. Bruce and Damian were written completely out of character.

Batwoman #1 (DC)
Andrew: Without a doubt one of, if not THE, sexiest comics on the shelf. And I’ll argue J.H. Williams III is the best artist in the game today.
Andy: Finally! It arrives! And it was everything we all hoped it would be. Didn’t even notice Greg Rucka’s name was missing from the cover.

Black Panther: The Man Without Fear #523 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: American Panther got knocked the F out! Though it looks like a new addititon to T’Challa’s rogues gallery has been added as well!

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 #1 (Dark Horse)
NickZ: A great return for this series. This issue felt more like an episode of the TV show than any of the season 8 issues, not that I didn’t like them too.

Criminal the Last of the Innocent #1 (Icon)
Andy: My favorite Criminal story so far. A+ stuff.

Daken Dark Wolverine #14 (Marvel)
NickZ: OK, is Moon Knight always written this crazy!?! And are there now two Dakens!?! What’s going on?

Daredevil #3 (Marvel)
Andy: This swashbuckling Daredevil is very likeable. If you’ve never been a DD fan, try out this opening arc.

Deadpool #43 (Marvel)
NickZ: Dr. Whitby is more nuttier than Deadpool, and that is saying something! I loved the bit between Deadpool and the Queen, hilarious!

Deathstroke #1 (DC)
Andy: I was on the fence until the ending when I was injected with a dosage of badass. This is how a Deathstroke book should be done.

Demon Knights #1 (DC)
Andy: I like the surprise incorporation of a certain Vertigo lady. A little heavy on the slapstick, but the art was solid and the story fun. Give it a shot.

Executive Assistant: Orchid #3 (Aspen)
Infinite Speech: There’s nothing worse than an Executive Assistant scorned! Just ask the guys whose heads are lying all over the ground!
Andy: Bloody, sexy fun.

Fear Itself #6 (Marvel)
Andy: Umm… yeah. Why in the hell would Spider-Man repeatedly shout for May Parker in public? Marvel needs to circle the wagons, because DC is owning them right now.
Arnab: Sometimes I forget about Spiderman’s history. Then he swings around town shouting for May Parker and I remember, it’s a hot mess. Good issue though. Can’t wait to see those weapons in use.
Infinite Speech: When mortals get pissed Odin get’s put in his place! And Immonen makes it all look fantastic!
NickZ: Things are about to go down! Lot’s of iconic moments in this one, the Avengers carrying a beaten Thor, Cap standing alone with a shot gun, and Odin and Thor having a proper father/son moment.

Fear Itself: Hulk vs. Dracula #1 (Marvel)
Andy: This just makes absolutely no sense. And I like Gischler’s other vampire stuff. The art doesn’t help either.

Fear Itself: The Monkey King #1 (Marvel)
Andy: The fuck was this? Why does this one-shot exist? Something tells me the writer had little to do with it considering his name is missing from the cover.

Frankenstein: Agent of S.H.A.D.E. #1 (DC)
Andrew: Wow. Was not expecting to like this as much as I did. If you like weird, then you’ll like this title.
Andy: Animal Man leave you wanting more? Then read this book because Jeff Lemire wrote it too! And for the love of freaks everywhere, pick up Sweet Tooth already!

Ghost Rider #3
Andy:
I’m really into Rob Williams’ X-stuff, but I couldn’t finish this issue.

Gladstone’s School for World Conquerors #5 (Image)
Arnab: This is a fantastic story wrapped in excellent dialogue, amazing artwork, and fun personified. These kids are here to show you that there’s a lot more to being a super-villain than sub-par weaponry and a skewed sense of self worth.
Infinite Speech: Good idea: Avenging your parents. Bad Idea: Trying to take out a hero that doesn’t have an issue beating children.

Green Lantern #1 (DC)
Andrew: I’m very intrigued by this chapter of Hal and Sinestro’s life. This was a great first issue.
Andy: Pretty good. I like how the focus has been pulled on the major players for now. Geoff Johns writes better that way.
Infinite Speech: Hal’s unemployed and Sinestro doesn’t want the job that he has? Looks like a great buddy sitcom in the making here!

Grifter #1 (DC)
Andrew: Kind of an ambiguous start. Still not sure if I’ll pick up Grifter #2. Nice art, though.
Andy: Never cared about Grifter before, but this one has ambitiously pulled me in.

Hercules: Spider-Island #7 (Marvel)
Andy: I wish I could go pound a beer or 12 with Spider-Herc.

John Carter of Mars: A Princess of Mars #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Pretty soon there will be five, count’em- FIVE- Barsoom related comics on the shelf between Marvel and Dynamite. That’s too many.

Journey Into Mystery #627 (Marvel)
Andy: I think this series starring kid Loki has been great, but this issue should have been the first of the run. It feels off putting it in the third quarter of a story.

Mister Terrific #1 (DC)
Andrew: A little wordy, and I was confused by the sudden racial tension toward the end, but I really like it.
Infinite Speech: Really hoping the stories improve over the next few issues. Really.

Mystery Men #5 (Marvel)
Andy: This book was excellent in every way. Since you probably didn’t read it, buy the trade. You’ll get sucked in.

New Avengers #16 (Marvel)
Infinite Speech: Bendis has slowly made this one of the best incarnations of the Avengers to date! Now make Squirrel Girl a member and let’s get this thing poppin’!!

Pigs #1 (Image)
Andy: Sad the latest volume of Criminal just ended? Don’t worry, Pigs is here!

Punisher MAX#17 (Marvel)
Andy: Jason Aaron has made me a Punisher fan. This series is why.

Red Lanterns #1 (DC)
Andrew: Even if you’re not familiar with the RL’s, this book is definitely worth checking out.
Andy: Ummm… the opening was humorous but this book should not be silly if it’s supposed to work.

Resurrection Man #1 (DC)
Andy: If you skipped this one, turn around right now and buy it while you still can. This was up there with Swamp Thing, Animal Man, and Frankenstein.

Scalped #52 (Vertigo)
Andy: If you say you’ve already read the best comic ever, but you’ve never read Scalped, you’re lying.

Severed #2 (Image)
Arnab: You ever get that feeling where you’re so creeped out you just want to tear your own skin off? That’s pretty much this book in a nutshell.

Spider-Island Spider-Girl #2 (Marvel)
Andy: An awkward team up makes this book almost unreadable. I really want to like this character, too…

Star Wars: Dark Times #2 (Dark Horse)
Andy: If there is only one Star Wars title to be reading, it’s this one.

Star Wars Invasion: Rescues #3 (Dark Horse)
Andy: It’s a decent series taking place in a period that’s tough to write about because the events are already set in stone. The artwork could be better.

Suicide Squad #1 (DC)
Andrew: Didn’t care for the choice of artist for this book. Nice introduction to the characters, but next issue is when the fun starts.
Andy: I like the new Harley. And yes, the old version was getting old hat.

Superboy (DC)
Arnab:
Things are changing in the world of Superboy and this is a great way to start it off. Old and new fans alike should pick this up.
Andy: When I first looked at this issue my first thought was, “That’s a lot of words,” but Lobdell handles the dialogue very well. Plus, I love the guest star.

Super Dinosaur #4 (Image)
Andy: Mark my words. Within the next 364 days a Super Dinosaur T.V. show, movie, or video game will be announced. Then come the action figures.
NickZ: This book is just loads of comic book fun! If you want to get kids into comics, look no further than SD.

Turok Son of Stone #3 (Dark Horse)
Andy: Couldn’t finish it, but man I love the old stuff.
Infinite Speech: It’s been so long between issues that I just don’t care anymore.

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #1 (Marvel)
Andy: Curve balls galore here. A well done beginning for the new Spidey. Hopefully it didn’t get lost in the New 52 Shuffle.
Infinite Speech: Nice debut of Miles and he’s already showing a power that Peter probably wished he had.

Uncanny X-Force #15 (Marvel)
Andy: Yep, I had to change my pants when finished reading. This always happens.
Arnab: Does it really need to be said? This series is beyond fantastic. To say otherwise would be to lie.
Infinite Speech: See previous Chirps, TFTWC, or Uncanny X-Piles to see how $#%@ great this title has been and continues to be!
Jeff: Lots of exposition in this issue, which would normally bother me, but this is so good, I just don’t care!
NickZ: How the hell can this book continue to be so friggin awesome!?! I literally don’t want each issue to end.

The Unwritten #29 (Vertigo)
Andy: This series keeps getting better and better. It was a slow build getting to this point, but it was worth it.

Warlord of Mars #9 (Dynamite)
Andy: Aaaand we should just end it here.

X-Men Legacy #255 (Marvel)
Jeff: The X-Men and the Starjammers are at an impasse as they find themselves on opposite sides of a civil war.
NickZ: I hope Alex and the gang are under some kind of mind control, otherwise their actions just don’t make sense.

Be sure to catch up on all past Chirps here!

  1. InfiniteSpeech

When Spidey was swinging around shouting for Aunt May it was pretty believable. When he caught up to her he explained that Peter sent him to find her and make sure she was safe.
