Chirpin’ Tuesday Reviews 05/30/12

Amazing Spider-Man Annual #39 (Marvel)
Jeff: A great twist on giving Peter a chance to see Uncle Ben again.

American Vampire #27 (Vertigo)
Arnab: Excellent ending to this two part story and a great setup for the next story. A-
Jeff:
They’ve got to do better with these fill-in artists. But I like the reveal that “werewolves”  and “zombies” are really a different species of “vampire.”
Andy: I like the idea of Snyder expanding his mythos, but this issue just felt off for some reason. B-

America’s Got Powers #2 (Image)
Arnab: Thing’s are seriously starting to heat up. And does anyone else find it a tad bit unsettling that Tommy’s mom is all good with putting him at risk in the off chance his brother will come back? A-

Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Promise Vol 2 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech
: The next best thing to the animated series are these books from Dark Horse!

Batman Annual #1 (DC)
Arnab:
So effin’ great. Snyder and Tynion gave Freeze a great new/old origin. They made him even more badass than he already was. A
Infinite Speech:
Great origin story for the New 52 Mr. Freeze! Loved the ending!
NickZ: Great retelling of Mr. Freeze’s origin. There were things that I liked and things I didn’t. Good read in any event.

Doctor Who/Star Trek: The Next Generation: Assimilation2 #1 (IDW)
Dr. Bustos: This issue is more Who than anything, but the Doctor imprisons aliens in Egypt and that’s always fun. B
NickZ: Great set up, fantastic art, great easter eggs, lots of Dr. Who goodness, but light on the Star Trek TNG.

FF #18 (Marvel)
Arnab: Duuude. Johnny can not get a break. And big Franklin teaching little Franklin, while blatantly disregarding Reed, is way cool. A

Magdalena #12 (Top Cow)
Infinite Speech:
This is the last issue and I’m pretty bummed about that. This creative team put nothing but “awesome” into every issue.

New Deadwardians #3 (DC-Vertigo)
Jeff: A fresh take on vampires and zombies! What a relief!

New Mutants #43 (Marvel)
Jeff: The only good thing about this story is that it’s finally over.
NickZ: Glad this “Exiled” thing is over. This team-up had some fun moments but felt too forced.

Peter Panzerfaust #4 (Image)
Arnab: If you’re not reading this book, start. Start now. It is a fantastic re-imagining of a household classic. This issue was particularly touching. A

Rachel Rising #8 (Abstract Studio)
Andy: Things have picked up and this book has gotten really, really good. A great gateway book for your lady, and a solid non-typical horror tale for the fellas. A
Jeff: Only Terry Moore could make something like a girl’s broken neck a hilarious character trait.

Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow #13 (IDW)
Infinite Speech:
Good Idea: Teaming up two of the best ninja every created. Bad Idea: Not making this issue longer!

Star Trek #9 (IDW)
Andy: Of all the TV/Movie related comics out there, this series is one of the best. An excellent issue re-imagining one of my favorite episodes. Landru be with you! A

Star Trek: The Next Generation/Doctor Who: Assimilation 2 #1 (IDW)
Andy: Fully painted pages by J.K. Woodward? I’m all in! Conversely, the writing was nothing special. Too much Doctor Who and not enough TNG! B

Star Wars: Blood Ties – Boba Fett is Dead #2 (Dark Horse)
Infinite Speech:
That bounty hunter should have really been the 8 yr old girl!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #10 (IDW)
Andy: Oh man, Shredder is about to pound everybody! How much longer until Bebop and Rocksteady show up? B
Arnab: Enter the Shredder. I can’t wait for Splinter to beat up those ninjas and give Shredder a dose of humility. B+
Infinite Speech: FINALLY! Shredder has come BACK to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

The Walking Dead #98 (Image)
Andy: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! God, I hope Andrea makes it past #100 alive. My theory? Rick dies. This becomes Carl’s & Andrea’s book. A
Arnab: Jesus frack. Just when you thought arrows were soo last month… A
Dr. Bustos: Well there goes that plot I was worried about by still keeping the tensions high, well done on that. B+
Jeff: It’s about time someone died. But I have to say, to have that character continue talking and not know they were dead was awesome!
NickZ: It’s started! I think issue #100 will indeed be “Something To Fear”!

Wolverine #307 (Marvel)
Jeff: I didn’t think anyone could top Jason Aaron’s run on this book, but Cullen Bunn is making me scream for more!
NickZ: These people are crazy, even by redneck standards!

Wolverine and the X-Men #11 (Marvel)
Arnab: I confess, I don’t get the Jason Aaron hype. This issue was pointless drivel. The entire issue was basically a love letter to Logan. Gag me now.  C-
Decapitated Dan:
What a waste of a great cover.
Dr. Bustos: Having Wolverine discuss his hatred of living up to the hype of being “the best there is” was great, I could read that more. A
Infinite Speech: Gladiator is PISSED! I hope he takes out a few Avengers in the process!
Jeff: Nick Bradshaw’s art made this issue suffer. This was the worst issue of this book thus far.
NickZ: This issue was great! I like how they fleshed out the Wolverine and Hope’s story and how they moved back and forth between various battles!

X-Men #29 (Marvel)
Arnab: Decent enough isue. It was nice that Pixie got some great airtime, but the fact that AvX is well underway, this issue just ends up seeming lost and out of place. B
Jeff:
Conrad’s art felt off this issue. Not a great way for Gischler to end his run.
NickZ: Pixie was pretty awesome in this issue and her team-up with Spider-Man was great. My only problem was the misleading cover.
Andy: Yawn. Really difficult to read every word balloon in this one. Pretty, but boring art by Will Conrad… which isn’t the norm for him. C-

X-Men: Legacy #267 (Marvel)
Arnab: F’ Yeah! It’s about time Rogue picked a side. Those Avengers scum need to be pud down Ned Stark status. Beheaded, followed by an immediate spiking of their heads. A
Infinite Speech:
The battle in this issue trumps every other fight that has happened in the AvX storyline! Great issue!
Jeff: Now THAT’S how an AvX fight needs to be!!! Someone get Gage to the AvX writer’s room…stat!
NickZ:
It’s about time these X-Men turn coats got in on the action and Rogue finally “took off the gloves” so to speak!

Wow nobody picked up Grim Leaper #1? My favorite of the week by far.

  2. SpidermanGeek

Nobody talked about how much of a giant piece of crap Incredible Hulk #8 was? The art looks like something you’d find in a small press indie book, where the only talent to can afford is someone who will work for free. And the writing…Ugh. I can see what Jason Aaron is trying to do.. but 8 issues into his run and he has yet to impress me. Can anyone ever top what Pak has done with Hulk? not so far.
