In the aftermath of the Dream Eater Saga, Sela is left to bury her long time enemy, but friend in the end, Belinda, in the land of Myst. Just as she is about to embark on her mission to try and save the soul of her beloved Erik, she hears a village elder tell the children a story of a time of giants. And also, a giant killer who ends up in the employ of the Dark One. This story encompasses the entire issue, but don’t worry, next issue will feature Sela’s mission to Limbo with her life at stake, along with the soul of her loved one!
Well, this is my first foray into the main Grimm title aside from Dream Eater Saga, and I must say I was quite impressed. Joe Brusha does a great job of taking a timeless story and just twisting it ever so slightly to serve the Zenescope universe! I think that’s why I love the Zenescope universe so much. They take traditional fairy tales and twist them ever so slightly and create something that feels one hundred percent genuine.
From the standpoint of artwork, Carlos Granda does a spectacular job on this book. His people, settings, and especially giants! Yes, that was definitely the strong point of this book. I love the scenes with the giants, and the tease for next issue was cool, too. How about that cover by EBas? His work is obviously over the top as far as the girl’s figure, but really look at the entire thing. It has detail like the small cuts on Sela’s leg, or the short beard hairs on Jack. Really good stuff that he doesn’t ever get enough credit for because of the cleavage factor. Rating 3.5/5

As Sela and Druanna are ready to depart on their mission to Limbo, Sela takes one last look at Erik as he lies in a casket. She dreams of the day when his soul will be returned to his body, and they will be reunited. The ruler of Tannus gives them provisions to make the trip, but they’ll need more than a few men, horses, and some food before this trip is over. After they make it about half way, they’re savagely attacked by some dragons. It wasn’t a random occurrence, either, and a shadowy figure is lurking nearby for the right time to make his presence known. Meanwhile, in Limbo, the enigmatic ruler, who is beautiful, yet also very cruel, has a meeting with Malice (AKA Baba Yaga). They discuss many things, one of which is a pact to get what they both want. I think we all know that these little agreements seldom work out, and there is an obvious double-cross coming with these two maniacal women involved.
I have to say that this issue, although it was a little slow, was still pretty good. The meeting in Limbo has me very curious, and the action with Sela and Druanna was pretty cool, too. I can’t wait to find out more about this new ruler of Limbo and what that means for everyone in the land of Myst. Oh, and I forgot to say that the new ruler of Limbo has a right hand man named Jack the Giant Killer, too!
As far as the artwork goes, this issue was pretty good, but I definitely liked the previous artist better. He definitely seemed more detail oriented. I did, however, really enjoy the dragons that attacked in the one scene. They were drawn very well, and were definitely the highlight of the book in that regard. The “B” cover by Fan Yang was pretty impressive, but the “C” cover (see below, by Mike Debalfo) was pretty cool, too. I’m hoping next issue will have a big showdown in Limbo with the new ruler and Sela going toe to toe! Rating 3.5/5
