The Dream Eater Saga Part 2: The Piper

I’m sure everyone has heard the tale of the Pied Piper, right? Well, if you haven’t heard it the way Zenescope tells it, you’re in for a treat. At the beginning of this one-shot, we get to see the origin of the mysterious Piper. He was brought in (centuries ago) by the townspeople to rid them of their rat problem. He took care of that easily, but when it came time for them to pay him, they refused, and tossed him out of town. He then hypnotized the village’s children, and drowned them all in exchange for power from the Dark One. The villagers in turn drowned him. Funny thing, though; he didn’t stay dead. Now he’s more dead than alive, and roaming the streets of New York City doing what he does best – stealing people’s souls.
The main story begins with a doctor getting a phone call late at night. The call is a warning to a man and his family to get out of their house, because the Piper is coming for them. Too little, too late, as hundreds of rats tear the unsuspecting people to shreds. The Piper then takes his payment from the man who summoned him to commit the murderous act, and leaves him for dead. As the Piper is walking out of the house, he’s confronted by someone that scares even him. The Dream Eater has come for him, and nothing will stop him from ridding Earth of all the magical beings, including the Piper.
I wont give too much away, but rest assured there is a big throw down between these two, and the ending really surprised me. Raven Gregory is spinning quite a tale here, and it’s a fun read, but it also has depth. The artwork is great as usual, and Zenescope seems to have an endless supply of artists that can really draw fantasy books. Look for this issue on stands now! Rating 4/5
