Zenescope Reviews: Grimm Fairy Tales Presents: Alice in Wonderland #1

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents
Alice in Wonderland #1
Publisher: Zenescope
Writer: Raven Gregory
Artist: Robert Gill (cover by Artgerm)
Whatever you think you may know about the tale of Alice in Wonderland, forget it. Raven Gregory has thrown tradition out the window, and is heading in a direction that will show Wonderland consumed by madness. We see a young Alice, being coaxed down the rabbit hole (technically a hole in the base of a tree) by her grandpa. After being greeted by a sinister looking rabbit, Alice is shown the entrance to the Realm of Dreams. It’s here that she falls into the clutches of the Jabberwocky. We see young Alice mature, and turn into a voluptuous young woman that is still a slave to the beast in Wonderland. A chase involving the Chesire Cat, and a giant walrus can all be found in this insane tale of the adventures of Alice!
Zenescope always seems to know how to take these classic stories and make them into something special. Raven Gregory has a great grip on Alice, and Wonderland in general. His previous experience with Wonderland obviously gives him a head start, but it still is something to be applauded. Seeing the great characters like the Jabberwocky, the Chesire Cat, and all of the classic (or not so classic renditions) characters is great. I really enjoyed the Jabberwocky the best. He had a sense of power about him that made him scary, instead of the traditional way of using just his physical portrayal.
Huge props to the artist, Robert Gill. He did a fantastic job with the creatures, the settings, and of course, with Alice. The scenes where she is a little girl are great, but the older version is absolutely sexy. Not over the top, mind you, but right on the money. His best effort is definitely the Chesire Cat, though, but he was still solid on all the others, too. The final page was nothing to sneeze at either, but the cat was my favorite by far. And of course, in typical Zenescope style, you have some alternate covers (cover below by EBas) that are just spectacular. Yes, sometimes they’re over the top, but hey, if that’s what you’re looking for, then go for it! Rating 3.5/5
