Back in Witchblade #144, a safety deposit box was opened with some very sensitive information regarding one of New York’s finest and her mystical weapon. Well, Lieutenant Phipps from Internal Affairs isn’t letting this go and is pressing Sara to come clean about what he’s found. Sara, however, is too cool for that and plays ignorant to what he’s talking about. She has more important things to handle since being assigned to a robbery case that involves Gerard Irons, who is the son of one of her many enemies. Though unknown to her is that she is being hunted by a new enemy, the sexy Babylonian goddess of chaos, Tiamat. She’s got a very old score to settle with the Witchblade and Angelus, and lucky for Sara she found her first.
As Marz and Sejic’s time on Witchblade winds down, neither of them is slacking in bringing the quality they’ve been known for. When Marz writes Sara as the cool and confident cop who’s hard to break, it makes me almost not want any of the mystical Witchblade stuff to get involved in the issue. Her verbal back and forth with the Lieutenant was a great build up, while her conversation with Irons hints at future problems for Sara, as well. His choice of villain for Sara (and possibly Dani) is quite the surprise, and it will be interesting to see what Marz does with her.
Now, if you’re thinking I’m going to have anything different to say about Sejic’s face-melting artwork then you’re so wrong. I know I said earlier that at times I’d be okay without the mystical elements in Witchblade, but then we’d miss out on some of Sejic’s skills. When he puts the creatures on the page you can’t help but go over those panels multiple times. Though one of my favorite panels is during Sara’s meeting with Phipps, as he perfectly conveys what she’s thinking just by having that eyebrow raised. When I heard that Tiamat would be in this arc, Sejic’s version isn’t what I was expecting. She’s sexy as hell and kind of resembles Halle Berry, and that is okay with me.
This is just another solid issue in this series and an example of good storytelling that is heightened by a talented artist. If that’s what you’ve been looking for, then hit up your LCS and start reading Witchblade, because an Internal Affairs investigation, mysterious robbery, and an evil Babylonian goddess on her tail is just another day for Sara Pezzini.

Sejic is a beast. I can’t think of another guy right now that tops his work. Especially from a cover standpoint. This series is gonna miss him and Marz.
Well, I’m glad this team will still be together on Artifacts but I’m not gonna leave Witchblade unless I’m not liking what the new team is bringing.
@Speech- Is Artifacts definitely gonna be an ongoing? I know I heard that, but can’t remember if its been confirmed. I seem to remember talking about it, but my memory is terrible. 😀
It’s been confirmed that it will be an ongoing but Top Cow is doing this really cool and “new” thing by just continuing the numbering instead of starting over with a new #1. So Marz and Sejic will kick it off with issue #14! What a concept!!
