It’s been a long time coming but Hawkins and Ekedal return with their impressive and controversial series, Think Tank! Now don’t worry if you haven’t read the first volume because the creative team gets you up to speed fairly quickly with a solid recap. However being that it is just a recap you’re going to want to go and pick up previous volumes of Think Tank sometime soon.
Hawkins opens up the issue with a stark, revealing look at our vulnerable infrastructure and how a possible attack could go. All of which is narrated by Dr. David Loren who has been relocated to California to continue his work on experimental military weapons. The new project is a perfect blend of practical science and sci-fi tech which makes you question if we’ve finally caught up to our imagination. We’re also introduced to several new characters and I’ll go ahead and say that Dr. Brooks is the standout so far! Her entrance is subtle until it doesn’t have to be and she seems more than a match for David. There is a bit of an uneven pace during the meeting that makes it read like a roll call though the moment passes fairly quickly. We’re still getting excellent character moments and dialogue that drives a story that has the possibility of actually happening. Which makes the cliffhanger all that more terrifying. This series also continues to have some of the most informative post story information that just shows how much Hawkins has put into the research.
Though Ekedal has yet to provide a scene where Einstein is piloting an F-22, this issue is nothing short of visual excellence. The opening flashback is in black and white is a nice throwback to the beginning of the series. From here on, the story is full color and it does add more of a punch to Ekedale’s already fine sequences. The opening attack along with the presentation/infiltration are two of the strongest series of panels because of the coloring.
This is a great jumping on point for those of you who might be new to Think Tank. From the recap to the character introductions the creative team makes sure that both regular and new readers enjoy the issue. So, for those that were missing Think Tank get out and pick this up and the same goes for those who are looking for something smart and new to get into!
