Tomb Raider #1
Publisher: Dark Horse
Writer: Gail Simone
Artist: Nicolás Daniel Selma
Cover: Dan Dos Santos
Things don’t seem to be going well for Laura after the events that took place in the game. There’s nightmares, unresolved feelings, and now a phone call from another of the survivors has started her on yet another adventure.
For some reason or another comic books based on video games have had a rough time winning over fans of either medium. With that said, Gail Simone brings something great to this issue that not only impresses, but makes you want to come back for more. She makes it easy for those who may not have played (or finished) the game to just ease into the story quite comfortably, making sure to bring an organic connection between the stories but also push Laura’s new adventure above all else. So there is no wasting time with recapping the story line from the video game, but instead using it as a springboard for where we meet Laura at now.
The artwork from Selma not only does the narrative justice when it comes to moving the story, but it looks really good in the process. Along with Michael Atiyeh’s colors which give the book a more animated feel as compared to the visual style of the game. This allows for some really good scenes and a nice flow from panel to panel when the action kicks in. This very clean and precise style here lends itself quite well to the story, and provides a flexibility that a more realistic style might not have been capable of handling.
If you have played the game and wanted to see where things go from there, then you’re in very good hands when you pick up this issue. If you’re not a gamer but are looking for another good comic to dive into, then you should give Tomb Raider #1 the chance it deserves. I did and the second issue can’t come soon enough!
Till next time!
