Our FCBD was also the shit. Lots of guests (Len Wein and Whilce Portacio headlining), and a huge sale. We had a 10 comic limit.
As for the schools point, we did our own PR there; dropped off a BUNCH of FCBD Green Lantern issues, complete with out store logo and info, to the local educational facilities.
I think it worked.
