As I went and checked out the BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) Black Comix Expo I noticed something that I didn’t think about before, Black nerd culture is nearing a zenith in media. Along with the general swing of the pendulum of the nerds inheriting the earth, media featuring Black heroes of sci-fi and fantasy are everywhere. Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham in Star Trek Discovery. Will Smith’s leading role in Netflix’s Bright. John Boyega from his breakout role as Moses in Attack The Block to his role as Finn in the current Star Wars trilogy and his upcoming film Pacific Rim 2. The subset of superhero fare has been taking these ideas of heroes from the pages of “kids stuff” and brought them to the forefront reaching us in our homes and on the silver screen. From the highly underrated film Sleight, which I feel has a quite unique origin story if they so choose to go the route of a movie series, to Cress Williams as Jefferson Pierce / Black Lightning on CW’s Black Lighting series and the juggernaut that is Marvel studios Black Panther featuring the world of Wakanda. The legendary comic book home of the Black Panther. I won’t go further into that film because if you don’t know about it – just stop nigh impossible to escape this film. I say all of this to say that stories featuring Black heroes are everywhere. However its important to note that these visual instances on TV, streaming series, and film franchises these major points of interest in presenting Black culture and Black bodies doesn’t translate to sales on the other side of media, in print. Especially in comic book form. There is a whole history of Black sci-fi and Fantasy writes like Samuel Delany and Octavia Butler, I mention these two as a start if you want to explore more works. In the past couple of years I’ve seen a greater push for independent stories to be told that are outside of the sandbox of what can be readily pulled up a bases as somebodies screen play. As I walked through the packed space at BAM I saw family’s and folks all across the age and gender spectrum interested in comix. They weren’t just here because of a movie, although BAM does have a super hero film series, Fight the Power: Black Superheroes on Film going during the week and this expo is in conjunction to the film series. Most major comic book series that have received the live action treatment don’t turn around into sales but this event is packed.

(L to R: Writer Vita Ayala, of the Wilds; writer Ra’Chaun Rogers, creator of The Gist; cosplayer Tony Ray; reporter from All hip-hop)

So what was the deal? I asked a few folks about why they came and they all touched on some of the same issues. I’m out here looking at all the beautiful black faces, I’m glad to see kids here. I came out to check my mentor Karl Bollers writer of Watson and Holmes as well as other things and you know say hi to a few people. – Ra’Chaun Rogers Mostly talk revolved around community. I, myself, was there to see if I knew anybody who attended. I saw the cosplayers who are a family onto themselves meet up and shoot the shit. Cons like this, Black Comic Book festival at the Schomberg center for research, East Coast Black Age Comic Convention in Philadelphia, Onyxcon in Atlanta among others are ways that we commune with one another and the media we love and its how we can reach out to folks and how they reach back for things they see in media and go deeper. My fore-bearers put their soul, creativity on a page and sell it to the people who need it the most US. The people who need to see themselves as more than a bank robber, pimp or a whore or a hostage or a criminal – that we need to see that we we gods and are heroes. Hopefully they can capitalize off of the steam that Black Panther pushes, that people can see that we can make other types of stories other than the comedies, crime dramas. -Ra’Chaun Rogers Speaking with artist independent artist Cricket he touched upon a the idea that event though these cons are essentially good they still function at a fault, I still have issues with the terminology of “Black comic books” but I know that culturally we are still behind the eight ball, right now we still have to push the Black comic boo, the black superhero platform before we can be seen as equals. I want to see the platform pushed a little further. I almost came to tears downstairs because I just saw kids, parents with their kids and their kids are really eager to be here because growing up you always want when Spider-Man took of the mask that he was Black. When you see a hero that is as held up as like a Batman or Superman the big ones. We want to see a Black superhero up there so that little kids have something that they could look up to and smile. – Cricket

Artist Cricket

Black fans exist in the margins of nerdom. For all the glits and glam that is circling around the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-man Hell even ANT-MAN, and DC’s films Black fans have to fight to see themselves and they take the chance on finding that new mythology in the form of a new comic to take in. That’s why con’s like this matter, and I’m glad to to have made it out to this event.

After all of the hiccups, false starts, and empty promises it’s great to finally get Wonder Woman on the big screen! So the lucky fans in attendance at San Diego Comic Con were treated to the first showing of the trailer for the Amazonian warrior’s solo film!

The trailer actually looks good and just might exceed expectations. Let’s just hope that when it’s all said and done that this film is a step in the right direction in the legacy of Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman stars Gal Gadot in the title role and hits theaters on June 2nd next year.

Soon to hit theaters on August 5th are the bad guys, the patsies, The Suicide Squad! There’s already been several trailers for this movie released and every one of them has knocked it out the park when it comes to meeting fan expectations. Well, get ready for a brand new remix trailer spotlighting the music of Suicide Squad that shows a lot more of the team and even better looks at the OTHER bad guys in the film!

Out of all of the films coming from DC this is the one that has had fans truly excited and on the edge of their seats to see! It’s a good thing it’s almost here!

Making it’s debut during the 2016 MTV Movie Awards is the latest trailer for the next film in DC Comics’ lineup, Suicide Squad! If you were impressed by the last trailer then get ready for more action, plot, and even a dark knight!

This looks to spin out of events that took place as a result of Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman so it’ll be interesting to see how DC’s interconnected films play out as we gear up towards the Justice League film!

You got to love that in the realm of super powers things like “really great aim” can be on par with “lift cars one-handed.” Some characters can just do that though. Deadshot is one such individual. He has the aim to put him in league with some strange allies. So who is Deadshot and and how did he come to be? Let’s find out!

Floyd Lawton was born to wealthy parents, George Lawton and Genevieve Pitt. He would worship his older brother, Edward, as would his parents. While love was shown for his brother, disappointment was shown towards Floyd. His father was abusive which united mother and sons in their hatred. There are several accounts as to what happened next. Either Genevieve was tired of the abuse and Edward took up arms to kill his father or George was ready to brutally beat Edward to death. Either way, the outcome is the same, Floyd would take up his own gun and miss his shot, killing his brother.

Vowing to never miss again, Floyd would take to training in deadly force from David Cain, one of the world’s greatest assassins. Now a grown man, Floyd would go to Gotham and live as a wealthy man and take up being a vigilante. That city is a popular place for such an idea. He would go by Deadshot and become so well liked, Commissioner Gordon would create a Deadshot signal in Batman’s absence. Floyd would never miss and disarm his opponents with trick shots. Things were not as they seemed though, Batman uncovered that Floyd was actually working with other criminals to distract the police from larger heists and get a take of the theft. Batman would rig Floyd’s guns to miss and take him in.

While in prison, any bit of Floyd’s care for nonlethal shots dissolved. Now willing to kill, he’d steal a targetting monocle from the Penguin while in prison and break out. Using this monocle would increase his already impressive accuracy. He would again attempt to take on Batman several times only to fail at shooting him. Realizing that obsessing over Batman was getting him nowhere but frustration, Floyd did what few of Batman’s enemies have ever done, move on from Batman.

Eventually, Floyd would find himself in prison again after being caught by the Flash. Instead of having to break himself out, he’d be confronted with an offer by Amanda Waller and Rick Flag to join the Suicide Squad. Joining the team, Floyd would become a crucial member not just for his shooting skills but with his knowledge of languages.

It turns out at some point, Floyd had a wife and son, this comes back to him when his ex-wife alerts him that their son has been kidnapped. Killing all who get in his way, Floyd arrives too late to save his son. This all is revealed to be his mother’s vengeance for what he did to his brother and for causing his brother’s shot to only put his father in a wheelchair instead of the grave. Floyd decides not to kill her but cause her to have to use a wheelchair too.

Along with the rest of the Suicide Squad, Floyd is blackmailed by a Senator. He is tasked by Waller to stop Flag from killing the Senator by any means necessary. Floyd achieves this mission by killing the Senator himself. As police come to take them away, Floyd pleas with Flag to get out while he can, going into a gunfight with the police. Surviving, Floyd would recover from many gunshot wounds in the hospital.

Back with the Suicide Squad, Floyd would have his suit stolen and the thief would use it to commit crimes, leaving Floyd to have to shoot the criminal who looked just like him. Cult leader, Kobra, would pay Floyd one million dollars to kill Deathstroke the Terminator and Peacemaker, he would learn upon his defeat by them that he was the intended target with the hopes the two men would kill him in his attempt to assassinate them. To help him gain vengeance, Peacemaker would pay Floyd one million and one dollars to work with them instead. Their rampage is bloody and deadly but Kobra still survives to lead his cult another day.

The demon Neron offers many villains the chance at more power for their souls, Floyd accepts this offer. This is all so he can better stop them himself, Floyd isn’t a big fan of most people let alone villains. Time away from the Suicide Squad would find Floyd in Gotham City again looking for work. Getting hired as a bodyguard by the Penguin and getting to shoot Batman off a building. He’d even face off with Batman again in an old west style duel, which would end with Floyd’s jaw broken by a batarang.

Learning he had a daughter named Zoe who lived in a very rough neighborhood in Star City, Floyd went to find her to help her out. He’d wipe out most of the criminal organizations in her home area and realized that he was just as bad for her as the other criminals. He’d make sure Green Arrow would patrol the area more now that he’d cleaned it up a bit.

If a team of villains turned anti-heroes is formed, chances are, Floyd will show up for a while. He would join the Sinister Six and work with them befriending Catman and working with Knockout who had been on the Suicide Squad before. What money he earned with the team was sent to Zoe and her mother. The team disbanded and working with this team would find him wanting to work with the Suicide Squad again and return to help them round up many criminals to be launched into space. He’d end up getting shot into space with them and was able to escape. Upon returning to Earth, he would rejoin the Sinister Six. He’d go on several more adventures with them such as going to hell.

In the New 52, Flowd Lawton only has a daughter and was in prison for his attempted assassination of a U.S. Senator. He’d be brought into the Suicide Squad project by Waller. Here he would have a tumultuous relationship with Harley Quinn and when she went A.W.O.L. on the team, he was sent to get her and got slashed in the face with a knife trying to get her back. He would appear to die stopping a cult from killing Waller, but he was somehow resurrected by Waller. When it’s time to make a new Suicide Squad team, he is tasked with offering a spot on the team for Harley.

There you have it! Deadshot is an interesting villain, he knows what he’s about and is good at what he does. He wasn’t good at killing Batman so he moved on. He has a cool mustache. He’s to be played by Will Smith in the Suicide Squad movie in a rather true to comics costume. How will that go? Who knows? Maybe it’ll be a lucky shot. See you next time!

Hosted by Kevin Smith & Geoff Johns, Dawn of the Justice League gives seasoned and newer fans a look into the evolution of the Justice League and how timely it is that they’re coming to the big screen. Beginning with the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice film that will be in theaters March 25th. It’s explained that this is the first meeting between the two and Bruce Wayne is blaming Superman for all of the destruction that took place in Man of Steel. Which still is a heated topic between comic fans and movie goers to this day.

Smith and Johns soon transition to the Suicide Squad where things get really dark. To familiarize the newbies there’s a character introduction by some of the actors in the film with a short spotlight on the Joker at the end. What is great is that we get a look at the upcoming Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot as the Amazonian Warrior. The footage looks fantastic

Smith then asks Johns the big question regarding the upcoming Justice League movie and how big it will be. Here we get the roll call of the members who will be filling out the team which includes Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg. But the BIG SURPRISE is that Green Lantern will be coming to the Justice League in the film! Even though an animated still of Hal Jordan is shown we’ll just have to wait and see if that was just a red herring or if we’ll finally see John Stewart ring slinging on the big screen! Oh, please let it be Stewart!

Back in July we got our first look at what the Suicide Squad will be bringing to movie goers this year. Airing during the Dawn of the Justice League special here’s the second full length trailer for the film so sit back and enjoy! The action packed trailer even has Bohemian Rhapsody playing throughout and it totally works!

Title: Men in Black III
Director: Barry Sonnerfeld
Writer: Etan Cohen (created by Lowell Cunningham)
Distributed By: Columbia Pictures
Starring: Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Jermaine Clement, Emma Thompson
Release Date: May 25th, 2012
MPAA: PG-13

Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back in action as the Men in Black. Alien convict Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement) escapes from the moon prison and seeks to get his revenge against Agent K for taking his arm. He goes back in time and kills Agent K, altering history and putting the entire fate of Earth in jeopardy. Now it’s up to Agent J to go back to 1969, save young Agent K (Josh Brolin), and put a stop to Boris the Animal before it’s too late.

Agent H is here now with the latest installment from the Ray-Ban wearing, head nodding, Men in Black. It’s been fifteen years since the groundbreaking first film, and ten years since the regrettable sequel. Can they pull it off and get the franchise back on track? Or will it be another successful but bad film that spells the end for the franchise?

For starters, Barry Sonnerfeld, the guy who directed the first Men in Black, is back at the helm. This might not sound like such a big deal, but it means that the feel of the first one is back. Everything from the soundtrack to the title screen feels faithful to the first film. And not only does he keep it faithful, Sonnerfeld also does a great job with directing and makes the shots creative without trying too hard.

Not only is the director back, but so are Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. After three films I can say that as with most great film series, it’s the characters we wind up caring more for than simply the premise. I couldn’t see the films without them, and Smith and Jones deliver what you expect. Will Smith is like Michael J. Fox or Toby Maguire in the sense that he pretty much looks exactly as he did ten years ago. Not only does he look the same, but he also brings the same wisecracking Agent J we know and love. Same with Tommy Lee Jones (the acting part, that is). Jones plays the same dry, no-nonsense Agent K, but adds another dimension to him.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Gremlin.

However, Smith and Jones aren’t the only ones here. There’s also Jemaine Clement as Boris the Animal. He might not be as grotesquely charismatic as Edgar or anywhere remotely as sexily sinister as Lara Flynn Boyle, but puts enough in it to make him an interesting character. Unfortunately, Rip Torn isn’t back again as Chief Zed. However, they replaced him with Agent O (Emma Thompson), who’s now the head of the agency.

Despite all of the good casting, the person whose performance stands out the most is Josh Brolin as young Agent K. He looks and sounds exactly like a young Tommy Lee Jones playing an Agent K. But it’s not just mere impersonation that makes his performance spectacular. It’s also the fact that he portrays Agent K as one who’s less cold than the older one.

One man Mexican standoff.

There’s decent special effects, entertaining enough action, and humor true to the source, and from that perspective, it’s all good. However, there’s one flaw that keeps it from being a terrific film, and that’s the story.

Don’t get me wrong, the story isn’t terrible. Despite having things that don’t logically make sense (as with most time travel films), the story is solid. However, just because it’s solid, doesn’t mean it’s impressive. The story is pretty simplistic and it doesn’t have much depth. You know those full length films that feel like they’re only thirty minutes? This is one of those.

Still, it’s an OK film. It’s not along the lines of Men in Black, but it’s a helluva lot better than Men in Black II. If you’re not really into Men in Black, then you’ll probably find this film mediocre. However, if you’re a fan of Men in Black, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see the film back on track.
