The fans have spoken and the results are in as we close out our Top 5 of 2016 Fan Poll! There were some tough choices in every category and even with five votes each it was hard to settle on who to pick. But in the end it looks as if Valiant was the choice for many voters. Having placed in several of the categories it seems like 2016 was a good year to be reading Valiant titles. Stranger Comics was also a surprise newcomer to the polls here though I was very happy to also see titles like Black, Monstress, and Cash & Carrie make some of the lists as well. But I’m still scratching my head about Batman vs Superman even placing but the people have spoken right? And when it came to comic events several of the tweets and emails received were very straightforward about the lack of excitement and just overall event fatigue. As one publisher can’t seem to go 2 months without an event taking place. But go ahead and see for yourself who ended up as the finalists in the Top 5 of 2016 Fan Poll!

That wraps up the 2016 Fan Poll and as usual there were some interesting choices that rose to the top. Hopefully something different popped up on your radar and you’ll be picking up some new comics after it’s all is said and done. Actually I’d suggest doing so because there’s some real gems here from the creators to the titles they’re working on. So thanks for making this bigger than last year’s and here’s to 2017 and what it has to offer for the next round of comics for the Top 5 Fan Poll!

It’s that time of year when those ‘Best Of’ lists begin to pop up but let’s be honest, there’s really no one true “best” when it comes to most of these categories we see. The comic book industry is overflowing with so much talent that picking one true best is damn near impossible! However, we still like a bit of debate and discussion and as a throwback to many discussions around the lunchroom table or just those heated back and forths about what comic was the best or which creator was pure fire (or trash) we’re asking, who are YOUR Top 5 when it comes to these categories?

We took submissions for all of you to vote on and in the spirit of the ‘Top 5’ you can vote on up to five (5) in each category. Hopefully while you’re going through the lists below a title or creator sparks an interest to check out something new to pick up and start reading.

Voting will end December 31, 2016 at midnight PST. So go ahead and get started and feel free to debate and banter in the comments below!

Director: Yoshiaki Kawajiri
Writer: Yoshiaki Kawajiri (created by Hideyuki Kikuchi)
Distributed By: Urban Vision
Starring (English): Andy Philpot, John Rafter Lee, Pamela Adlon, and Wendee Lee
Release Date: August 25th, 2000
MPAA: R

After fifteen long years, D returned back to the big screen in Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Not only did the years apart make both Vampire Hunter D and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust very different films, but Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is based on the third novel, Demon Deathchase, and although it certainly shares similar style and themes to the rest of the books, there’s considerable plot differences to the first novel (which was the basis for the first film).

For one thing, both the style and feel of it is completely different than its predecessor. Vampire Hunter D had the feel of a Gothic Hammer film mixed in with some sci-fi, ronin/western, and other elements. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, while sharing some similar influences, leans strongly towards a spaghetti western mixed in with some Gothic Renaissance styling. If Vampire Hunter D took place in a small, Transylvania-like town, then Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust takes place in an American southwestern styled Italian villa. And although I miss the old Hammer horror feel of the first film, the new Italian-like feel of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust makes for a fresh and interesting approach to the Vampire Hunter D franchise that keeps it from treading too closely to the first film.

Speaking of style and scenery, the animation here has been vastly improved. No more stilted movements anymore. And both the drawings and coloring are more vivid and dynamic as expected. 3D lends a big hand to it, although the 3D is subtle and it never sticks out like a sore thumb. The characters feel like they jump from out of a Yoshitaka Amano drawing, but the big eye candy here is the scenery. Not only is the scenery beautifully drawn and animated, but the scenes are some of the most imaginative I’ve seen, from the dry desert plains to the breathtaking Castle of Chaythe.

The rest of the production is pretty top-notch. The voice acting has come a long way (although I prefer Vampire Hunter D‘s Michael McConnohie and Kirk Thornton as D and D’s left hand). Translation, as with the previous film, avoids any bad Japanese to English mistranslations. And although I miss Vampire Hunter D‘s eerie and surreal synth soundtrack, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust‘s Marc D’Ambrosio gives a soundtrack that has a nice variety that fits each moment. Above all, though, is the vast improvement over the action scenes. No more static backgrounds as the characters perform their moves. The fight scenes are in real time, excellently choreographed, and entertaining (even if they do suffer from anime seizure flashes).

Story wise it’s yet another fairly faithful adaptation of Kikuchi’s novel. Meaning that the plot is solid and it has what you’d expect from a Vampire Hunter D entry. D on yet another for hire mission to save a woman from being taken by a vampire. But there’s a twist. Charlotte (Wendee Lee) is actually in love with Meier Link (John Rafter Lee). Add in a rival group of mercenaries competing against D, and an eclectic group of monster mercenaries working for Meier Link, and you’ve got a story that’s more than your average “slay the vampire” tale. The story feels like your average well-produced anime for about a third of the film, but then things start to get real interesting, and it’s pure balls to the wall by the final leg of the film. Not to mention that the film contains some surprisingly touching moments from time to time.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust proves once again that the franchise is easily adaptable for anime, and perhaps with a little luck someday, live-action. Like the predecessor, it has style, action, and a good story, but this time the production is much better. It’s a shame that they didn’t continue making more Vampire Hunter D films after this, as Kikuchi’s D novels combined with Kawajiri or any great anime director’s talents could’ve made some impressive and imaginative films. On the plus side, Kawajiri did in fact work on a Kikuchi adaptation called Wicked City (1987), which might be interesting to take a look at (hint, hint).

Director: Toyoo Ashida
Writer: Yasushi Hirano (created by Hideyuki Kikuchi)
Distributed By: CBS Theatrical Films
Starring (English): Michael McConnohie, Barbara Goodson, Jeff Winkless, and Edie Mirman
Release Date: December 21st, 1985
MPAA: NR

It’s time to delve into some Kikuchi film adaptations here on Movie Mondays. And although Vampire Hunter D is originally a novel and not a manga, its impact on both manga and anime are undeniable. I suppose to some extent Hideyuki Kikuchi impacted manga the way The Shadow impacted comic books.

If you’re familiar with the first book of the Vampire Hunter D series, then you probably know what to expect from the film, since this is fairly faithful adaptation of it. For the many of you who might be completely unfamiliar with Vampire Hunter D, the premise is fairly easy to grasp, as it’s somewhere between a Western/Samurai film and a Hammer Horror. Basically, in the year 12,090 AD, humanity has reverted back to a more simplistic (though somewhat futuristic) lifestyle after a nuclear war occurred in 1999. Vampires arose from the post-apocalyptic world and are now essentially the nobility of the social hierarchy. In a small village, Doris Lang (Barbara Goodson) is attacked by Count Magnus Lee (Jeff Winkless) and will soon be his bride. In a desperate attempt to avoid becoming a vampire, she hires D (Michael McConnohie), a dhampir and a vampire hunter, to kill Count Magnus Lee.

Like the Hammer Horror that inspired it, Vampire Hunter D‘s greatest strength is arguably the atmosphere and setting. Right from the get-go, Vampire Hunter D has a dark, almost dream-like quality to it, especially with the brilliant post-title scene where D wanders through an apocalyptic wasteland. A good deal of it comes from the coloring, which might sound like a trivial attribution, but the dark blues, reds, and blacks, as well as the occasional bright daylight scene, keep the tone in check. Not to mention that Tetsuya Komuro’s brooding, synth driven score, which has a hauntingly surreal quality that still holds up pretty well.

Fact: The Moon appears 80% larger in all horror films.

However, while the atmosphere and style still works, the animation is starting to show some age. Don’t get me wrong, the animation’s impressive for 1985. But like many 80s anime, some of the flaws are beginning to show. The movement is the main culprit here. Again, for the mid-eighties it’s pretty good, but the stilted movements are glaringly obvious compared to today’s more fluid top-quality anime.

Speaking of stilted, the voice acting is also something that hasn’t graced well in today’s times. It’s far from being the worst English anime voice acting out there, but it has the common 80s flaws. Where the actors put a little too much emotion into the lines at times, and everyone “talks-like-this-where-the-dialog-sounds-staccato-and-stilted.”

Talk to the hand.

However, those flaws are easily overlooked because of the story. As stated before, the story is pretty close to the novel. There’s a lot of character changes, from minor ones such as Dorris’s hair is blonde while Lamkia Lee’s (Edie Mirman) hair is black (their hair color is vice-versa in the book), and Rei Ginsei’s (Kerrigan Mahan) character relationship to Dorris and D is still malicious but much more nobler. But the plot itself is close to the novel.

What’s different from the book, though, is the pacing. While the book is a terrific read, the heavy emphasis on detail occasionally grinds the flow down to a snail’s pace. Whereas in the anime, everything runs along fairly smoothly, including the scenes outside of Lee’s castle.

The English translation of the script (by Tom Wyner) avoids the pratfalls of bad translation errors, and the dialog seems natural if you ignore some of the voice acting that comes along with it. Especially D’s left hand (Kirk Thornton), who’s a scene stealer whenever he speaks up.

Simon Bellmont's little sister.

Even after almost thirty years, Vampire Hunter D has proven itself to be an absolute classic for both anime and animation in general. Yes, there are some flaws that come with age. But these are really minor when you look at the well-written story, mix of horror, sci-fi, and action, and gorgeous atmosphere (not to mention violence and nudity). It’s a shame they waited fifteen years to make another film, rather than making a film series that would’ve followed the books. And it’s a bigger shame that they still have yet to make a live-action film that might spark mainstream interest in the franchise. But at least they made the anime, which is definitely a must see if you can get your hands on it.

Title: Vampire Hunter D Volume I
Author: Hideyuki Kikuchi
Illustrator: Yoshitaka Amano
Publisher: Asashi Sonorama (DH Press)

While Hideyuki Kikuchi is a novelist and not a comic book writer, it’s pretty safe to say that his works have had a tremendous impact on manga and anime (and perhaps video games). With works such as Wicked City and Darkside Blues being adapted into anime, his cool, slick, atmospheric works are something to be noted by any geek who’s a fan of the east. And of course, there’s the Vampire Hunter D series. Which is arguably his most famous work and the big break for both Kikuchi and Yoshitaka Amano.

It’s hard to describe exactly what Vampire Hunter D is. Or at least narrow it down to one genre. It’s sci-fi with it being set in 12,090 AD, and having futuristic weapons such as laser guns. But it also has horses and carriages and many things that make it feel almost medieval. It’s a western, with D being much in the same spirit as the “man with no name.” But at the same time, he has almost a ronin spirit and style to his fighting (not to mention he uses a longsword). You could say it’s a horror, with many of the Hammer horror creatures coming to life. But then again, the novel oftentimes employs action as much, if not more, than scares. So basically, it’s a wonderful mix of many types of styles and genres.

But if I had to narrow the plot itself down to one genre, I’d say it’s very much a cowboy/samurai style story. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where vampires rule as nobles over the human peasants and have genetically engineered monsters to unleash terror upon them. The people’s only hope are hunters, legendary warriors skilled with specific skills, such as fighting werewolves or demons. When Doris Lang gets bitten by Count <del>Christopher</del> Magus Lee, she has two options. Have Count Lee slain so she can be cured of the curse, or have the dreaded options of being locked up in an asylum or taken in as the count’s wife. Her only hope left is D, a mysterious and powerful vampire hunter who happens to be a dhampir (half human, half vampire). In exchange for slaying Count Lee, she will give D food, shelter, and her virginity (sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me).

Of course, the plot and situation get much more complicated. Rival hunters, demons, and other mishaps plague D’s path as he tries to slay Count Lee. It’s an over-the-top, no holds barred kind of adventure.

Which might turn off some Western audiences. I’m not just talking about the plot, but also Kikuchi’s writing. I don’t mean that he’s a bad writer. Quite the contrary. However, in a time where Americans seem to be having a neo-realism style of fiction, Kikuchi’s romantic, fantastical style of writing might not be for everyone out west. His writing is atmospheric and focuses as much of the beauty (or destruction) of it all as much as he does the characters. As I stated before, this is a larger than life story. Where everyone is fighting faster than the speed of light, and have abilities far beyond real human capacity. Plus, D’s much larger than life. Such as the fact that he’s beautiful and Kikuchi will write in detail about how beautiful he is in every chapter and how every women wants him because D’s so beautiful and how even the men wish they were women because D’s so beautiful.

But that’s half the fun of the writing, believe it or not. Rather than being cartoonish, this is mature in its outlandishness. It’s like one of those serious anime that’s completely ridiculous, but is also something you can’t help but love. Like Akira.

However, this is not to say that the book is strictly Eastern. Actually, more of the influences come from Western works. As I stated before, this is influenced much by the Hammer horror films, and arguably even the old Hollywood horror films. Literature wise, this is similar to HP Lovecraft or even Stephen King, so any fans of those novels can easily read their way through this one. And as far as trivia goes, Kikuchi himself said that the initial creative spark came from the Don’t Lose My Number music video by Phil Collins.

As far as the drawings go, it’s Yoshitaka Amano. You’ve seen his art before (the Final Fantasy series, Sandman: The Dream Hunters). And if you haven’t, feel ashamed for yourself and go check his work out. Basically, he has a certain style and you can take it or leave it. Fortunately for me, I’ll gladly take it and I’ll gladly take his illustrations in Vampire Hunter D Vol. I. The covers for all the Vampire Hunter D novels are amazing. And I always enjoy inside illustrations for books. The only problem about illustrations in novels, is that since they’re often in pure black and white, the illustrations can get muddled and confusing. Which is what happens to these illustrations at times. Still, it’s always an enjoyment to see Amano’s illustrations.

Regardless of its style and translation (which is great, but is odd with the dialog), I think most comic book fans should give this series a try. Especially those who are fans of anime, manga, Stephen King, Hammer Films, and HP Lovecraft. It’s got a little bit of everything, there’s plenty of action, and Vampire Hunter D Vol. I is one hell of a ride.

Author: Original story by Hideyuki Kikuchi, adapted and illustrated by Saiko Takaki
Publisher: Digital Manga Publishing
Volume: Today, volumes 1 and 2. $12.95 each.
Vintage: These manga are based on the light novels by Kikuchi (illustrated by the amazing Yoshitaka Amano), which began in 1983. The novels are published domestically by Dark Horse and Digital Manga. It’s up to twenty volumes in Japan; volume 14 will be released here in June. The manga began in November 2007, published in the U.S., Japan, and Europe. The fifth volume should be out this July, and Kikuchi and Digital Manga have plans to adapt the entire novel series.
Genre: Well, it’s certainly a mature series. DMP has it labeled as a young adult book (16+). There’s nudity, some sexual content, violence, blood and gore, vampires, demons, large breasted women who occasionally find themselves naked…. It’s horror and suspense, with some sci-fi elements (it’s set in the future, with some futuristic elements, like robotic horses), but it has an old-fashioned western feel to it most of the time (the cowboy kind, not geographically speaking).

In 1999, a nuclear war destroyed civilization. The Nobility, ancient powerful vampires, were prepared for the disaster, and became the ruling class, rebuilding the world, co-existing with the humans. Centuries go by, and vampire technology and society reaches its peak, a sign that it’s doomed to fall…and fall it does, with the great vampire families crumbling into decay as the humans rise back into power. It is now 12,090 AD. A mysterious man wanders the land, a dhampir, the child of a vampire and a human (it’s not totally spelled out, but it’s hinted at rather obviously, that the vampire is the King of Vampires, Dracula). He is D, and he is a renowned vampire hunter, his vampire ancestry providing him with the perfect set of skills needed to destroy the decaying race of beings that have become dangerous to the humans. D has incredible supernatural powers, with much of the strengths of the vampires, and little of their weaknesses. His mixed blood aids in his task, but also causes him to be shunned by both vampires and humans, despite his exceptional good looks and commanding aura. As if he weren’t powerful enough, in D’s left hand resides a symbiote, which (aside from needling D with various wise cracks and taunts) can suck in large amounts of matter, and regenerate D’s body when he’s injured.

That robe looks suspiciously flimsy.

In the first volume, D wanders into the town of Ransylva, where a Noble terrorizes the citizens. He meets a woman named Doris on his way into the town, who realizes he is a hunter and asks him to be her bodyguard. She has recently been attacked by the ruling Noble, and wants protection for her and her little brother. But the Noble isn’t the only danger in the town. He has a jealous daughter, and she commands a powerful werewolf. Even her fellow townspeople are on her case, afraid of the mark of the vampire on Doris’s neck. Toss in a reckless human with a powerful suit of armor, and a quintet of demonically enhanced humans, and D’s got quite a lot to deal with. However, they all make the terrible mistake of underestimating the powerful dhampir.

D moves along to another town in the second volume, Tepes, which lies in the shadow of an old, ruined, deserted mansion. Ten years ago, four children wandered up the hill to the old mansion, and disappeared. Two weeks later, three of them returned – Lina, now the beautiful adopted daughter of the mayor; Cuore, who came back mentally deranged; and Lucas, now a school teacher. D has been hired because several townspeople have been attacked by some form of vampiric creature, assumed to be the missing child, Tajeel. The townspeople are suspicious of all four of them, but many want the suspicions cleared, as Lina has been chosen to take an exam that may get her into a prestigious school in the city, which will benefit the entire town. When D goes to examine the abandoned ruins, he finds the remnants of a strange laboratory that brings back memories from his past.

These books are gorgeous. The wrap-around book cover is a faded rust color, and is covered by a beautiful dust jacket. The edges of the pages are colored to match the volume (volume 1 has red pages, volume 2 purple). They’re oversize like most of Digital Manga’s books, and there’s even a color insert inside (the color images for volumes 1 and 2 highlight each volume’s female protagonist). The art inside by Takaki is fantastic, if you like the style, and she seems to have taken some inspiration from Yoshitaka Amano’s original character designs from the novels. Just a couple pages into the first volume you’re greeted with a large breasted, naked woman…but don’t let that mislead you. She bounces those things about quite a bit, but the books are not overtly sexual in nature (no more so than anything else in the genre anyway), though those elements exist from time to time (it should come as no surprise that D, as a mysterious, beautiful, half-vampire, is incredibly attractive to the main women in the books, and they’re not exactly shy about it). There’s a lot more in the way of limb slicing and and blood gushing, and even an occasional disemboweling. The pacing is a little scattered at times, and sometimes a tad cryptic and confusing, but otherwise the story telling is solid. The girls come and go like Bond girls for now, with both of the first two volumes following separate, contained stories. D’s past and lineage haunt him in various ways, and seem to tie everything together.

For Wednesday, I’ll either have a review for DMP’s Happy Boys manga, or Previews highlights. Just picked up Previews yesterday afternoon, and Happy Boys is already written, so it’s more likely to be the latter.
