Half of the team has been mutated into hideous monsters and the other half is attempting to stop the Beyond Corporation who have a past with Spectrum. So, needless to say, she’s not happy to see that they’re back after what they did to her during her Nextwave days.

Al Ewing has made sure that this series has been fun and even with things coming to and end he wraps up this arc without letting it feel like a filler issue. The team chemistry is developing nicely and it’s great that A list characters like Spider-Man have more of a support role. This gives the others some time to shine and Ewing has been handling that nicely especially with Blue Marvel and Spectrum. As much as there’s been focus on Cage and Captain America it’s the others that have stood out in these stories. And when we get to see them cut loose it’s always something you want to see. Whether it’s Blue Marvel showing off his brilliance or Spectrum pushing her powers to new heights Ewing has made this a great Avengers team to check out on a regular.

There is a lot of visual goodness here from Iban Coello who makes this just as much fun for your eyes. The action is intense and you can just feel the slow motion effect happening when Cap kicks the mutated Quickfire in the face! Rachelle Rosenberg handles the colors and keeps things bright and strong in every panel. The sequence with Kevin Brasher looks fantastic as his unique energy signature is displayed as he helps out his father and brother.

This is another great issue that is a nice contrast to the darker toned Avengers titles that are out there. Though with the world ending Ewing leaves us with a nice cliffhanger that will pull this team into what’s been going on with their other teammates. If you’re not reading this title then you’re missing out and should give it a try!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Marvel’s ‘Secret Wars’ Expands Battleworld With New Interactive Map!

InfiniteSpeech

Avengers

Infinite Speech

Iron Man

Marvel

News

Spider-Man

X-Men

banner

Battleworld

Noelle Stevenson

Runaways

Secret Wars

Time Runs Out

X-Tinction Agenda

Over the past several weeks Marvel has been releasing teasers of more titles that will take place during the upcoming SECRET WARS event. The Illuminati has come up with a way to not only halt the world-destroying conversions, but also a permanent way to end the Cabal, as well. However, Hickman makes it very plain that regardless of who saves the day, Steve Rogers is not letting the Illuminati members go free when it’s over. And remember when Black Panther put Namor on notice that he would deal with him for destroying Wakanda? Well, it seems as if that time is now, but the good guys still have some world saving to do first.

Seeing the heroes like this has been some of the best storytelling involving these characters in some time. Though not at odds like in Civil War, but with the stakes this high, Hickman definitely makes you feel the weight of everyone’s actions. Now, the fact all of the teams actually decide to just talk it out here is both welcome and confusing. The Illuminati definitely feel like the ends justify the means, and the entire conflict comes to a point where you’re forced to see how they might be justified. But why wait until Earth has two hours left to bring this plan to the others?

The tension between the teams is enough to satisfy any fan, especially when the dialogue is this good! I have to say that Cap asking T’Challa to turn himself in was almost as hilarious as Cannonball and Sunspot chiding Beast. The moments of levity are very rare here, but really help to break up the threats and arguing while staying true to who certain characters really are. Those worried that we would continue to only get lip service from T’Challa will be happy to know that the confrontation between Black Panther and Namor doesn’t disappoint at all! Hickman even pulls this off with a few surprises.

Caselli’s talents are displayed throughout the issue, adding the visual weight necessary to move this story and make it look as good as it does. There is a large portion of the book where the characters are debating and just discussing the matter at hand. Caselli makes these moments very big, and pulls every ounce of drama he can with his detailed work. Frank Martin’s colors are just as good, as he brings out what’s needed to assist Caselli’s art. That tense moment between Steve and T’Challa is probably the best three panels in the issue because of these talented artists. The only complaint I have is in regards to how Steve is depicted here as opposed to other issues. In this title he’s looking like the most fit 80-year-old ever to exist. However, in most other titles, he’s on a cane and looking like your average, everyday grandfather. The only consistent visual cue is the liver spots. It doesn’t take away from the overall look, but if you’re reading other titles that feature Steve it is slightly off putting.

Time Runs Out has been a slow burn, but it’s worth the time if you want to see what will build up to the upcoming Secret Wars event. The cloak and dagger aspect along with all of the twists and surprises have been cleverly pulled off by Hickman, and you’ll be on the edge of your seat to see what is coming next!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Marvel Gives A Deeper Look Into Battleworld!

InfiniteSpeech

Avengers

Infinite Speech

Iron Man

Marvel

News

Spider-Man

X-Men

Battleworld

Jonathan Hickman

Secret Wars

Time Runs Out

Last week Marvel released the Battleworld trailer for the Secret Wars event that will be upon us next year! This came after a slew of teasers, and now it seems to be all coming together as we get a detailed look at where these teasers belong on Battleworld in this new map of the area. Now, there was a glimpse of this in the trailer, but now you don’t have to attempt to watch it a million times to memorize where everything falls. There’s also several areas that weren’t teased in the initial releases!

The more we see of the upcoming Secret Wars event the more it reinforces suspicions that it’s somehow tied into what Hickman has been doing with the Avengers and New Avengers titles in the Time Runs Out story lines. All of what we have seen points to the Marvel Universe “ending” in some way, but I guess we’ll have to wait until 2015 to get the answers to it all!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Marvel Reviews: New Avengers #25

InfiniteSpeech

Avengers

Infinite Speech

Marvel

Reviews

Amedeus Cho

Black Panther

Illuminati

Jonathan Hickman

Kev Walker

New Avengers

S.H.I.E.L.D.

Time Runs Out

New Avengers #25 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Kev Walker Cover: Butch Guice & Matthew Wilson This issue is the other side of the coin that is Avengers #35, as we’re eight months in the future and piecing together what has happened to the Illuminati. Reed, Beast, and Hulk, who now goes by “Doc Green,” along with Captain Britain, have been on the run for some time. Stark is “lost,” and Black Panther is on a side mission that doesn’t reveal good news at the end of this issue. However, if you expected good news after seeing that cover then you’re a bigger optimist than I.

Hickman has so many moving parts going on at once, but manages to keep things from being confusing. However, there’s still much that is unanswered, which may or may not frustrate some readers. There’s still the feeling of “something big” with this story, but we still don’t know how Captain Britain joined the ranks of the Illuminati, nor how he joined the eye patch club. What is established is that things are very bad, and S.H.I.E.L.D. is everywhere and capturing the Illuminati is priority number one. So where the book really shines is that Hickman is writing these characters like the uber intelligent men that they are. Much of the dialogue lays out how they’ve stayed a few steps ahead of S.H.I.E.L.D. and how they plan to continue their mission. The amount of tension and suspense that takes place during the story does well to keep you involved enough to want to stay engaged. There isn’t a character that isn’t well written here, and though Capt. Britain may not be in their caliber of intellect, Hickman doesn’t have him feel out of place either. There is a lengthy conversation between Susan Richards and the captured Amadeus Cho that took too long to become interesting, but when it does it really gets intense. It is a little strange to see Susan on this side of the law after how passionate she was about fighting against Reed during Civil War. If you haven’t been reading this then understand that Sue’s determination to capture Reed is akin to Stryker hunting mutants.

Kev Walker’s artwork in this issue is some of the best you could ask for. He moves the tension and drama just as well as the narrative does, and with the assist from Frank Martin and David Curiel on colors you’ll be pleased at what you see here. Walker even draws a great looking Beast, which seems to have been an issue for several artists since his transformation took place. There is very little to complain about aside from the missing “4” on Reed’s chest that appears seconds later in the next panel.

This is a very cerebral title, and Hickman isn’t showing his hand just yet as to what is going on. Time Runs Out has been a pretty cryptic story line running between Avengers and New Avengers, but it is one of the more focused and exciting things to happen in a while. This is highly recommended to those of you who are tired of huge events and want something a little more self contained. New Avengers #25 will leave you guessing and on edge, but for all of the right reasons.

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Marvel Reviews: New Avengers #24

InfiniteSpeech

Avengers

Infinite Speech

Marvel

Reviews

Black Panther

Doctor Doom

Jonathan Hickman

Namor

New Avengers

Thanos

Time Runs Out

Valerio Schiti

Wakanda

New Avengers #24 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Valerio Schiti Cover: Gabriele Dell’otto Much like in Avengers #35, Hickman has rocketed the story eight months into the future. So it has been eight months of killing other planets to stop the destruction of the 616 by the traitorous Namor and the Cabal. Though now it seems as if Namor has noticed that instead of just doing what needs to be done, things have become more of a joyous slaughter. So now he has secretly sought out the help of Doom. But what would you expect when Thanos is a member of your group and is given the freedom to just kill planets and everyone on them?

While Avengers has had more of a faster pace, here it’s more of a methodical, slower paced story that fits perfectly. Many of these characters are at their best when plotting and setting things in motion, and Hickman captures that with precision as Namor and Doom have an excellent back and forth over dinner. This puts the Atlantean ruler in a rare position of yielding to someone else. The dialogue between the two not only illustrates where Doom stands in all of this, but catches us up on the past few months. There’s also a surprising development taking place in Wakanda, as it continues to fall to the madness of Maximus. This is where things begin to speed up, as the Wakandan equivalent to Special Forces, Hatut Zeraze, leaps into action along with T’Challa and Shuri!

Valerio Schiti makes the scenes with Namor and Doom look as tense and uncomfortable as they should be. From Kristoff’s dismissiveness to a very powerful looking Doom, you can’t help but take time to appreciate how good it all looks. When we shift over to the alternate Earth being destroyed by Cabal members, it’s a pretty violent scene that would be a bit over the top for other villains, but Thanos is no average bad guy.

Hickman has been on a roll with delivering issue after issue of some of the greatest minds involved in some intellectual chess matches. He told us in the first issue that “everything dies,” and the story seems to be converging at that point regardless of what the heroes do. So his revelation at the end of this issue is quite a surprise and worth the time it takes to get there.

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net

Marvel Reviews: Avengers #35

InfiniteSpeech

Avengers

Infinite Speech

Iron Man

Marvel

Reviews

Dustin Weaver

Illuminati

Jim Cheung

Jonathan Hickman

Nick Bradshaw

Paco Medina

S.H.I.E.L.D.

Thor

Time Runs Out

Avengers #35 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist(s): Jim Cheung, Paco Medina, Nick Bradshaw, & Dustin Weaver Cover: Jim Cheung & Justin Ponsor From the moment the book opens on the shattered roll call screen, it’s obvious that things aren’t going well for Marvel’s team of heroes. It also shows some changes on the horizon. Hickman flashes forward eight months ahead, and some more drastic changes have taken place. Cannonball has a child, Sunspot purchased a certain company, and much more. Though the most shocking is that S.H.I.E.L.D. is now running things in a big way, and their Avengers are hunting down the Illuminati members with a vengeance.

Much of what Hickman has been doing in this title has been building towards this, and the payoff is looking like it’s going to be big! The story shifts around and spotlights various members of the former Avengers team that Tony and Steve put together in the first issue. Giving us a glimpse of where they’re at now also gives little hints about where the story is going. It’s just enough to pique your interest and test your patience, because by the issue’s end you’re left demanding more. Especially when you see who the newest Illuminati member is, and the reveal at the end of who is chasing him down.

There’s quite the group of artists on this issue, and they knock it clear out of the park! Each mini chapter in the issue is a strong piece of visual storytelling that does the script justice. Not one weak section in the entire issue, and it was good seeing Bradshaw handle the Cannonball/Sunspot part of the issue. There is also a very telling scene involving Thor which reveals a stripped down version of the Asgardian. He says very little, but everything you need to know about his current state is in that panel. Maybe Hickman’s dialogue wasn’t even needed. The final sequence is the icing on the cake in terms of pacing and how great it all looks, so just know that Cheung doesn’t let you down.

You’re going to be left with a lot of questions at the end of this issue, but in a good way! Hickman delivered some very big surprises here and I have a feeling that they’re nowhere near as big as what’s coming up. All I know is that the end of the universe is coming, and if it’s going to be written this well then you should hop on board and ride it out to the end!

Infinite Speech
infinitespeech@comicattack.net
