Welcome back to another edition of The All-New Uncanny X-Piles! Yeah, it’s been a long time since we were here and truth be told it’s because the world of Marvel’s mutants in comics has been quite the lackluster venture and there’s been other comics worth spending that hard earned money on when New Comic Book Day rolls around. But when word got out that award winning storyteller, Ed Piskor would be adding his own touch to the world of the X-Men it was worth a look to see what he was bringing to mutantkind!

Publisher: Marvel
Artist: Ed Piskor
Colorist: Ed Piskor
Cover: Ed Piskor

The X-Men’s history is extensive, detailed, and at times can be frustratingly confusing for some. However, Grand Design attempts to make sense of the timeline while making the big picture even richer in the world of mutants. By doing this he takes us back but not to the formation of the team and it’s first five members but to when Namor attacked and flooded New York in his battle with the original Human Torch. This is the moment that becomes the catalyst for human/mutant relations for decades to come since Namor was the first mutant in the Marvel Universe. It’s this little change of Piskor’s that also sets Brian Xavier on a path that would influence his son’s mutation. From here we see the evolution of not only Charles but Magneto and those who would come to flesh out the history of the X-Men for decades to come.

If you’ve been a fan of the X-Men for a while this is a series that you should have added to your pull list since day one. Piskor isn’t just slapping some events together to retell the beginning of the X-Men but he’s masterfully aligned the pieces of a very elaborate and often out-of-whack puzzle to tell the story of some of the greatest characters from Marvel. Even if you’re well versed in the history and lore already, Piskor’s storytelling here keeps it quite fresh while making the entrance to the X-Men’s world a bit more accessible to any new reader who might not have been around when these classic events were introduced to the fans. As the story builds you begin to see how large the mythos has become and how well Piskor handles the already vast amount of characters in this issue alone. You can see that he has not only done his research here but refuses to just regurgitate historical facts about the team’s early days. There’s heart in this and he captures the voice of every single character even when the Watcher is moving things along.

Not just content with handling the narrative but Piskor knocks out the visual storytelling as well. If you’re familiar with his work from Hip-Hop Family Tree then you already know what to expect. It’s this overall visual presentation that helps to immerse you in the story. From his signature style to the panel layouts this trip to the X-Men’s past is one of the best. Even the look of the paper stock helps to give you that fresh off the spinner rack comics feel and brings it all full circle. Though his style might be cartoony for some, Piskor has no problem bringing the drama and weight to certain emotional scenes to propel his narrative along. I also personally liked his Iceman design because it gives him a dirty snow look which adds to the “realism” of the character’s early snow form. That 90s hover chair is also welcome in any time period but that’s just a longtime favorite of mine so it was good to see that as well. Now, as good as the issue looks that last page was one of the standouts. From the pose of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, who look like they’re about the drop the most fire mixtape to an unexpected cameo as well.

When the issue hits its cliffhanger there’s an added reading list for those that want to see where certain events originated from. Like Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross’ Marvels added a new depth and excitement for the early Marvel Universe, Ed Piskor’s X-Men: Grand Design is on track to do just the same for the mutants! 4/5

What he finds is more than vampires and demons . . . something unusual and frightening is happening here.

Hey everybody! In lieu of my normal character spotlight, I’d like to take a moment, and appeal to the masses about the current state of Marvel Comics. Most already know this, but for those of you that don’t, I stopped reading most current comics about 9 months ago (November 2013 – to focus on filling back issue gaps!), but I’ve been more than intrigued by Original Sin. ComicAttack.net’s own team of Infinite Man & Aron Fist have taken up the monumental task of covering this “event”, and you can read their coverage from day one, by clicking here!

After reading through their reviews, I have more questions than answers, and that has led me to the conclusion, that if by story’s end they are still raving about it, then I’m going to buy this one in trade paperback. This got me to thinking (dangerous, I know), that a book has been lying around my man-cave for a while, because I don’t know which box to put it in, quite frankly. The issue is Point One (image above – 2012), and back when it was published, I was convinced Marvel was onto something new and refreshing. I’d like to take a look back at it, and then hopefully get some fresh perspectives from current readers on how things have progressed since this book came out, two years ago.

First up, I’d like to commend Matt Fraction, and the team of Terry & Rachel Dodson, and their herculean effort on “The Defenders.” I don’t believe there was a tougher challenge than the one they took upon themselves. Think about it for a moment. The title was masterfully crafted back in the 1970’s/80’s, by such talents as Roy Thomas, Steve Englehart, Len Wein, Steve Gerber, Ed Hannigan, Sal Buscema, Don Perlin, and J. M. DeMatteis (just to name a few). Attempting to follow in those footprints is quite a daunting task, whether they’ll admit it or not. Their (Fraction & the Dodsons) run on that title (albeit a brief one) was pretty solid. It did fade out at the end, but I’ll give them a pass due to the fact that it was abruptly cancelled.
I did keep up with the new Nova title for a bit as well, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The fun-loving attitude that the new Nova has, is something we can all relate to. Sometimes those tropes can get old quick though, but from what I’ve read/heard, the title is till going strong. It seems to be factoring into the Original Sin storyline quite heavily.

The Scarlet Spider title (that was one of the features in the Point One issue) never appealed to me, and overall, no Spider-Man titles have for a very long time. I just fell off with that character’s solo activities many years ago, and hearing about the Mephisto nonsense only solidified my non-buying habits for that character. I have heard good things about it though (the Dan Slott material), but alas, my wallet can only endure so much.
As far as the Avengers story in this book…well, I think we all know how well Age of Ultron was received, so there’s really no reason to go back into that vomit-inducing story. I will say this though. What has happened in Avengers, New Avengers, and Uncanny Avengers (up until I stopped reading them) was quite good, especially the latter. I didn’t finish the “Infinity” story, and maybe I will in the near future because that seemed to have some good spots in the main book as well as the ancillary titles.
All that being said, there are a myriad of questions in my mind, and some of the answers can only be found by buying new comics again. I just can’t bring myself to do it just yet. Have I turned into that crotchety old comic book guy from the Simpsons? Maybe, but you, the readers of the “now”, might be able to convince me other wise. Are you up for the task?

The eye bomb has exploded and no secret is safe in the Marvel Universe! Not ONE! Well, maybe one or two, because now that Uatu is dead who will be the resident Peeping Tom of the Marvel U? We’ll get to that later, because now we’re looking at some tie-ins and trying to recover from the cliffhanger in Original Sin #3, while letting you know what you can skip in this event!

Original Sin #3
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Mike Deodato Jr.

There aren’t many comic books out there that can make me laugh out loud. This issue opens with a flashback to a conversation between The Orb and Dr. Midas that had me counting this book among those that can make me laugh. You should read this comic.

After the “eye bomb” went off, it exposed many secrets to many of our heroes. I think we’re going to get some quality tie-ins, now, to address these secrets. You should read this comic.

The last page of this issue gives us probably the biggest WTF moment of the year. Not only is this a very good event, it is a very good comic book. You should read this comic. – AF

Rating: 5/5

HOLY $#%&! Yeah, that was my reaction after reading this issue, and I won’t be spoiling anything for you if you haven’t taken a look at this issue yet. As far as everything else is concerned, Aaron continues to build this little mystery, especially when various heroes and bystanders are caught in the wave of the “eye bomb.” We find out that Stark did something to Hulk, Thor has a sister, and Luke Cage is still confused by the events of “One More Day.”

Along with the capture of the Orb, Aaron also throws another little kick in the head that lets us know that this is bigger than we thought, and even reveals a traitor among the good guys. So who is it? Well, that’s one of many questions raised here, but a big one is why didn’t Fury “see” any secrets during the explosion?

All in all the core title has been the most fun thanks to Aaron’s storytelling, and it’s all wrapped up in Mike Deodato’s eye cathing (pun intended) artwork. – IM

Rating: 4.5/5

Overall: I was really disappointed with 2/3 of the book. Well, all but the last two pages, actually. The Young Avengers story will continue, and we’ll possibly get another two players for next issue. Don’t buy it, though. It seems to be the typical, pointless anthology tie-in book. – AF

Rating: 2/5

Anthology books really aren’t my cup of hot chocolate, but when you throw in Deathlok it’s a sure thing I’ll be there. Now this isn’t the Michael Collins Deathlok from years back. The new guy resembles the design from the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series, but I will say that this little preview here has definitely gotten me excited for the first issue that comes out later this year!

The Young Avengers story wasn’t too engaging for me in terms of art and story. And though the Lockjaw tale was cute, that’s all it was, and actually doesn’t make too much sense if you think about it even a little bit.

Maybe the next issue will have more to offer, but this one didn’t do a good job of wanting to make me come back and put my money down for it. – IM

Writer: Al Ewing
Artist: Greg Land

As I told you about Original Sin #3, our heroes each saw something when that bomb went off. Luke Cage confronts his dear ol’ dad about what he saw. Al Ewing and Greg Land are kickin’ it old school by taking us back to 1972, where Blade looks like a dork and Cage’s father looks like Shaft, to hear what James Lucas has to say.

Ewing’s story wasn’t nearly as marvelous as last issue’s was, but it held my interest and has kept me intrigued enough to follow him to next issue. Land’s art? Well, again, I really didn’t notice it was Land until a pretty blonde showed up. Isn’t that most people’s complaint about his art? The women? At least they are pretty! – AF

Writer(s): Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan
Artist: John Lucas

Don’t, people. Just…don’t. – AF

Rating: 1/5

Well, I’ve realized that the audience for this tie-in is the die hard Deadpool fans that were buying this title in the first place. I say this because the mystery concerning the whereabouts of Deadpool’s daughter was an investigation already taking place prior to the event. Posehn and Duggan didn’t need to have their story thrown in with Original Sin, but someone decided that it was necessary to slap that logo on the cover.

The humor in this story is actually better than in the last issue, and it absolutely makes sense to have Dazzler at your side when fighting vampires. Even if it’s 70s Dazzler using 80s valley girl slang, which didn’t make sense, but this is a Deadpool title so stuff doesn’t have to make sense all the time I guess.

Deadpool #30 doesn’t stack up as a tie-in to the event, however, if it was allowed to just stand on its own I might have been a bit more forgiving. – IM

Rating: 2.5/5

The murder mystery that will reveal more secrets than an episode of whatever show it is that reveals a lot of secrets has begun! So with Original Sin actually getting underway, Infinite Man & Aron Fist once again venture into a Marvel event to see if there’s anything worth reading in the these pages amidst all of the rubber glowing eyeballs and alternate covers. And if not, will their kung-fu and ultimate disc golf skills be enough to see them through until the end?

Original Sin #2
Writer: Jason Aaron
Artist: Mike Deodato

The superhero murder mystery continues, and while the Avengers are chasing another Mindless One through a skyscraper, Black Panther and his team are picking through corpses. It seems like the unknown assassin was practicing before he stepped up to put a hole in Uatu’s head. There’s also a nice reveal that was so obvious Aaron hid it in plain sight (pun intended) of the reader.

Aaron is two issues in and picking up steam with Original Sin. We are treated to more action in this one as we get a super spy in a flying car, Avengers and X-Men fighting TOGETHER for a change, and a pile of dead bodies. And while Aaron handles a larger cast in this issue, the plot stays focused and worth the price of admission. Especially with Deodato’s artwork making this entire thing look as good as it does.

Now that Uatu’s eye has “exploded,” it seems like a lot of dirty little secrets are about to come to light, and a lot of people are going to be angry. Hopefully the next few issues don’t devolve into a hero vs. hero slugfest and the story keeps getting bigger and bigger. I say that because right now it doesn’t feel like an “event” just yet, but it has been a nice starting point. – IM

Rating: 4/5

While Deodato makes it all pretty to look at and Aaron makes it all intriguing to read, we’re left with so many questions. Not many answers…yet.

Questions like: “Who is that Thing-looking thing?” “Why is an old Ghost Rider villain so important?” “Why couldn’t The Mindless Ones be this cool a long time ago?” “Who else thinks it’s weird that The Punisher is traveling to other-worldly realms with Doctor Strange?” “With the way she jumps through windows of tall buildings, guns a’blazing, is Exterminatrix really Charlie Baltimore?” “Why does Tony Stark sit around Avengers Tower in just his underwear and helmet?”

I am sticking this one out. Marvel seems to be doing a summer event right, once again. You would do yourself some good to put your eyes on this series. Pun intended. – AF

Rating: 4/5

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Leinil Francis Yu

Aron Fist is a little confused. An ORIGINAL SIN tie-in that, at first glance to me, seems to have nothing to do with ORIGINAL SIN.

Captain America remembers stuff. He remembers the Illuminati tampering with his memory because he went all Boy Scout on them way back when, and corners Iron Man with some Avengers muscle. What did Cap remember? What did Cap see? What did this have to do with ORIGINAL SIN? Is someone’s original sin about to be revealed?

I’m going to default to Infinite Man on this one and tell you to trust his word on it. This issue made my head hurt. – AF

Rating: 2/5

Being that Hickman has been building towards this moment for some time, it gives this issue some pretty strong legs to stand on, though it would have been preferable if so much time wasn’t devoted to revisiting the past events right after reading the recap page. Making most of those pages a bit redundant until we get to Steve wielding the Infinity Gauntlet, and we revisit what happens to the gems. In spite of all of that, Hickman turns this issue around with the conflict build between Tony and Steve. This is where the issue shines as their back and forth just keeps escalating until the point where you know it’s going to get rough. Then when that happens, Hickman decides to hit you with a bomb that seems to overshadow the cliffhanger in the main series! Which is pretty rare for a tie-in, and this one demands you come back for more!

The artwork from Yu carries the tone of this issue perfectly. It’s moody, intense, and when the action hits he nails it once again. The exchange between Cap and Thor pretty much lets you know that things are about to go down, and it’s one of the many great looking panel sequences in the book.

If you’ve been reading this title since the first issue you will get a bit more out of this than someone just now coming on because of the event. However, any new reader doesn’t have to go back and read the previous twenty-eight issues to understand what’s going on. So, for the first official tie-in to Original Sin, Avengers #29 is actually worth the paper it’s printed on! – IM

Your eyes are not deceiving you folks, it’s the official return of Infinite Man & Aron Fist! After bringing you our coverage of Shadowland and Fear Itself, it was evident that Marvel events were taking a toll on our sanity and quite frankly just not living up to all of their hype. Well, we’re back again to see if the latest event lives up to the expectations and is worthy of your time and ours. So sit back and relax as we try to figure out who kills The Watcher and what else is in store for the fans in Original Sin!

Original Sin #0
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Jim Cheung & Paco Medina

That question on the cover is a very good one, and this issue wants so badly to answer it for you. Being that Uatu is one of the most prominent Watchers in the Marvel Universe since his debut in the sixties, it would make sense that before he’s killed off in this new event that we know a little more about the guy. Let’s face it, up until now, Uatu has been mostly regulated to cameo appearances over the years, though whenever he shows up you know it’s for something monumental in the Marvel U. And if we’re lucky we’ll see him continue his streak of breaking the Watcher Oath which he still holds the lead for.

Mark Waid does an excellent job here using Nova as our guide, so to speak. The young hero poses such a simple question to Iron Man and Cap about Uatu that it stumps them. From here he goes off to the moon to pay the guy a visit, and through a series of events in Uatu’s home his question is answered along with the one that he really wanted the answer to in the first place. Some may say that “nothing happens” here because it’s not jam packed with punching, boobs, and explosions. However, it’s the nice steady character build here that wins out.

If you’ve come to expect great looking artwork from Cheung and Medina, then it’s all here and made even better by Justin Ponsor’s colors. Let’s just say that it’s so great that if this issue was to be a silent one with mostly art moving the story instead of Waid’s narrative, I’d be just as happy. There are so many great looking scenes throughout the issue it’s hard to pick just one that stands out. Though when we get to see how much The Watcher is actually watching, it’s a huge moment visually and it’s a good chance to see if there are any little hidden surprises scattered among the visuals in that two-page spread.

Original Sin kicks off rather strong with this issue, and though we don’t get a lot of “who” The Watcher is, the question of “why” is clearly answered here. So if you had no point of reference for Uatu before this then Original Sin #0 is a nice place start, and even if you’re a longtime reader you’ll get something out of this as well. – IM

Rating: 4/5

“Original Sin.” Marvel’s big event of the summer is finally here! So, that means summer is here, right? Can you feel it? I can’t either. It probably won’t feel like summer to me until I get to see Uatu in a Speedo.

Wait. Uatu’s is going to what? Inconceivable!

Let’s get to it!

Who Shot Ya?!

Original Sin #0 opens with Nova squaring off with the dangerous and deadly Tomazooma! (Gesundheit!) The Avengers show up just in time to see Nova brushing the dust off his shoulders from his battle with Tomazooma (It’s not Attuma!), but he was really hoping for Uatu, The Watcher. However, the whole exchange between the Avengers and young Nova felt very much like when the Ultimates would stick their nose in Pete’s business in Ultimate Spider-Man.

Nova learns a thing or two about Uatu and the Watchers. Enough to nearly make his head explode. When I found out the Watchers are close in origin to DC’s Guardians, even my head almost exploded. Also, if you pay close attention to the interaction between Uatu and Nova, you will be left with a very intriguing mystery.

Mark Waid did a great job of giving a rundown of what Uatu and Nova are about. This is very handy if you have never read Nova and have never encountered Uatu before. Jim Cheung’s art, as always, is pretty to look at. It was also nice to see some of the Young Avengers Cheung is known for thrown into the various scenes that the Watcher was watching.

Though I wish Waid and Cheung were staying on the series, the creative team passes to Jason Aaron and Mike Deodato for Original Sin #1. I like Deodato’s art and I am hoping that Jason Aaron can win me over after giving me too many boring letdowns over the years.

Keep it tuned here, folks! We’re just getting started! Until next time, I’m going to go stand in the television department at Sears and pretend I am Uatu. -AF
