The Top 5 Poll is back and here for you to let everyone know what comics, creative teams, movies, manga, and others took it to the next level in our wonderful fandom during this crazy year of 2020!

The rules are pretty simple. In the CA.net Fan Poll you’ll vote for your top 5 entries in each category. That’s five (5) votes per category you can cast from submissions sent in and some from our staff. You can do this daily and if you don’t see an entry you think deserves to be in a certain category then add them in!

This round of categories ranges from standout characters to indie books and your favorite anime and movies so scroll down and vote!

After the announcements of Shang Tsung and Nightwolf, NetherRealm is officially revealing the rest of the roster for the latest Kombat Pack. This announcement confirms many of the rumors and it looks like many of you were correct! Sindel joins her MK regulars along with comic book entries Spawn and Joker who are no stranger to fighting games. But we also get a new fighter in the T-800! The game sports the version that will be played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the upcoming film Terminator: Dark Fate.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios today released a new Mortal Kombat 11 trailer revealing the final two guest characters to join the Kombat Pack roster, including the Terminator T-800 featuring the likeness of actor Arnold Schwarzenegger from the upcoming Skydance and Paramount Pictures film “Terminator: Dark Fate,” alongside one of the most iconic and recognizable DC Super-Villains, The Joker.

The new trailer provides a first look and release timing for all upcoming fighters available in the Mortal Kombat 11 Kombat Pack, including the Terminator T-800 (Oct. 8 early access), Sindel (Nov. 26 early access), The Joker (Jan. 28 early access) and Spawn (March 17 early access), joining Klassic Kombatants Shang Tsung and Nightwolf, who are currently available.

The roster is pretty impressive though it’s missing several of the rumored characters and one in particular that fans were eager to see which was Ash Williams from The Evil Dead. Guess we’ll have to wait for another Kombat Pack next year for chainsaw and boomstick action!

SPAWN sold an unprecedented 1.7 million copies at the time it was released and is one of the world’s best-selling and longest-running monthly comic books, with hundreds of millions sold worldwide in more than 120 countries, and 15 different languages.

The comic became an Emmy Award-winning animated series on HBO and a New Line Cinema feature film that grossed more than $100 million. McFarlane went on to direct and produce award-winning and critically acclaimed projects for top movie studios and record labels.

Mortal Kombat 11 fans are now closer to playing with the classic villain of the series, Shang Tsung! It was announced earlier that the soul stealing sorcerer would also have the likeness of the man who played him onscreen in the first Mortal Kombat movie, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. The trailer shows off some of his shapeshifting abilities and proficiency at using the skills of past fighters to defeat his foes. All of this provides some sick looking combos that build up to a fatality that also includes the appearance of another classic MK character.

Also included in the upcoming Kombat Pack with Shang Tsung will be the long rumored Spawn! That’s right, one of Image Comics’ most recognized characters is coming to Mortal Kombat AND he’ll be voiced by Keith David. The original voice actor for Al Simmons/Spawn from the HBO animated series. Sindel, Nightwolf, along with two mystery characters will also be included in the Kombat Pack with one of them rumored to be Ash from the Evil Dead films and tv series. This might also explain the timing of Bruce Campbell’s tweet earlier this morning.

The Kombat Pack will include:

Character skin and gear sets for each DLC character
Bonus Johnny Cage Ninja Mime character skin and gear set
18 bonus character skins for existing Mortal Kombat 11 characters
One-week early access for all content listed above

If you picked up the Mortal Kombat 11 Premium Edition the Kombat Pack is included but if not, the DLC package will be $39.99.

Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN character sets the stage for a historic celebration as it breaks the record for the longest-running, creator-owned comic in the world. To mark this momentous occasion, McFarlane has gathered a team of superstars from the comic industry to contribute to this giant sized 72-page book.

The big news for SPAWN #300 is that award-winning artist, Greg Capullo (Batman), returns to illustrate SPAWN. Capullo first brought his talents to Image Comics’ longest running title, with issue #16, leading to a visually-stunning run as the book’s featured artist, culminating in the hallmark 100th issue.

Following his seminal work on DC Comics’ iconicBatman, Capullo will be the main featured interior artist on SPAWN #300, alongside another major revelation…

For the first time since 1995, Todd McFarlane, one of the top-selling artists in comic book history, will return to pencil and ink interior artwork of the character he created during his high school days!

“I created SPAWN back when I was a teenager hoping to someday break into the comic book industry,” said Todd McFarlane, SPAWN creator, and President at Image Comics. “Now, over 40 years later, not only was I able to have a career drawing and writing comics, but SPAWN has been by my side for most of that journey. Even more exciting, SPAWN is becoming the longest running creator-owned comic in the world!

“The group of creative folks helping out on this historic SPAWN 300th issue is something that I hope thrills the ‘inner 15-year-old’ in all of us. Plus, to have Greg Capullo come back to this title after so many long years, is what has me most excited as I personally consider him to be the top talent drawing in our industry today.”

The superstar creative team doesn’t end with Capullo and McFarlane. Current SPAWN artist, Jason Shawn Alexander, fan-favorite J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl, Spider-Man), rising star Jerome Opeña (Uncanny X-Force, Seven to Eternity) and best-selling writer Scott Snyder (Batman, Metal, Wytches), all bring their talents aboard to help usher in SPAWN’s next grand evolution.

The birth of Image Comics in 1992 was an exciting time, but there are few moments I remember more vividly than getting my hands on the first issue of SPAWN,” said Eric Stephenson, Publisher & Chief Creative Officer at Image Comics. “Todd was already a comics superstar at that point—but SPAWN vibrated with an energy all its own and I think everybody knew it was destined not only to be a hit but to stand the test of time. The fact that we’re approaching issue 300 nearly 30 years later is a testament to its impact not just on Image, but the industry as a whole. Go, Todd!”

SPAWN #300, a 72-page full-color comic book, celebrating 27 years, and counting, of the hit independent series with an all-star lineup of comics creators, will be in stores August 29, 2019. The title will feature 12 covers by McFarlane, Capullo, Campbell, Opeña, and Alexander, including gorgeous black and white “Artist Edition” variants showcasing the original, inked artwork of both Capullo and McFarlane. This historic, oversized issue will retail for $7.99.

“I’m a long-time fan of Greg’s work and the projects his company, KNB have done throughout the years,” said McFarlane “Working with him once again, to re-invent the Spawn ‘look’ so it will match the supernatural theme in the movie, is going to be a fun process.”

This year, McFarlane has announced an ensemble of award-winning talent that has signed on to the Spawn Movie Cast – Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Jamie Foxx (Ray, Django Unchained, The Amazing Spider-man) has been cast as Spawn and Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (Hurt Locker, Wind River, The Avengers) has been tapped to play Twitch.

This newest adaptation—a gritty, R-rated reimagining marks McFarlane’s film directorial debut. McFarlane is partnering with Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, the producing force behind recent hits Get Out and Split and The Purge franchise, to develop a feature film around the Spawn comic character created by McFarlane.

Publisher: Image
Writer(s): Paul Jenkins & Todd McFarlane
Artist: Jonboy
Cover: Jonboy

After bringing things to an end with the latest Spawn (Jim Downing) in issue #250, the original is back and he’s as angry as ever. Al Simmons has returned after being gone for five years and has a new mission. The battle between Heaven and Hell has cost him much and it’s still taking. So with Wanda and her unborn child trapped in Hell he’s determined to set them free.

Now, with a new creative team behind the wheel the expectation was that Spawn would have a slightly different feel as far as the storytelling goes. And while a solid issue, it didn’t strike me as something new. This still feels very much like McFarlane is writing this all by himself which isn’t a bad thing but when a new creative team is brought on board the last thing you want is the same that came before. It’s a dialogue heavy issue and at times it just slows things down especially during Al’s conversation with some neighborhood kids that he’s probing for information. A sequence that started off strong but as it went on it just became tired. It also seems like after all of this time that Al hasn’t learned anything. He’s still very angry, untrusting, and refuses help from anyone. All of this makes him remind me of the exact same character we met way back in those first few issues of Spawn. Some character growth would be okay at this point since we’re on the #251st issue. There is some more explanation about Wanda’s situation and things pick up when some demons challenge Spawn giving us a glimpse of his new abilities.

The high point of the issue is Jonboy’s art which definitely gives the series an entirely different feel visually. This is probably the most noticeable shift and even gives the title a bit of a superhero look and less of a horror vibe. The only complaint would be the last page where the intensity of the dialogue really didn’t sync up with the art in the panel.

As promised, this issue is a good jumping on point if you’re new to the franchise or if you’ve been gone a while. However, it would be nice if it was entirely written by Jenkins just so we can see what he’d do with Spawn on his own.
